  • How do I find the date my MacBook was made? Apparently mine is about 6months too old to update to Mountain Lion.

I recently got a job that requires at least MacOS 10.7. I downloaded Mountain Lion but when I tried to install it, the message said it wouldn't work on mine. I can get a newer MacBook from a friend, that also needs the Mountain Lion update. Before she wastes her money like I did, it would be useful to know when her computer was made.

    Upgrading to Lion
If your computer does not meet the requirements to install Mavericks, it may still meet the requirements to install Lion.
You can purchase Lion at the Online Apple Store. The cost is $19.99 (as it was before) plus tax.  It's a download. You will get an email containing a redemption code that you then use at the Mac App Store to download Lion. Save a copy of that installer to your Downloads folder because the installer deletes itself at the end of the installation.
         Lion System Requirements
           1. Mac computer with an Intel Core 2 Duo, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7,
               or Xeon processor
           2. 2GB of memory
           3. OS X v10.6.6 or later (v10.6.8 recommended)
           4. 7GB of available space
           5. Some features require an Apple ID; terms apply.
    Upgrading to Mountain Lion
To upgrade to Mountain Lion you must have Snow Leopard 10.6.8 or Lion installed. Purchase a redemption code at the Online Apple Store: OS X Mountain Lion. Mountain Lion is $19.99 plus tax. Use the code to redeem a download of Mountain Lion from the App Store. The file is quite large, over 4 GBs, so allow some time to download. It would be preferable to use Ethernet because it is nearly four times faster than wireless.
OS X Mountain Lion - System Requirements
Macs that can be upgraded to OS X Mountain Lion
             1. iMac (Mid 2007 or newer) - Model Identifier 7,1 or later.
             2. MacBook (Late 2008 Aluminum, or Early 2009 or newer) - Model
                 Identifier 5,1 or later.
             3. MacBook Pro (Mid/Late 2007 or newer) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later.
             4. MacBook Air (Late 2008 or newer) - Model Identifier 2,1 or later.
             5. Mac mini (Early 2009 or newer) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later.
             6. Mac Pro (Early 2008 or newer) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later.
             7. Xserve (Early 2009) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later.
To find the model identifier open System Profiler in the Utilities folder. It's displayed in the panel on the right.

Note that some less-than-stellar applications may barf at the change, even though EVERYONE knows the name of a computer is not an authentication mechanism.
On the same vein, if you change the name of the startup volume (aka Macintosh HD) after having put stuff there, even more poorly designed apps may barf.
Just so you know and aren't caught by surprise.

  • How can I improve the speed my macbook pro is running at without upgrading hardware?

Okay, I have a standard macbook pro, software is all fully up to date as is my OS, however over the past month or so it seems the mac often takes a fair few seconds to carry out certain functions, and comes up with the multi-coloured loading cursor thing often. It's not a case of memory as I have over 2/3rds of my disk space clear and I don't think my CPU is over-burdened as the monitor shows (if any of these processes are suspect please let me know):
I've ran a malware scan, and it came back with nothing bar a few tracking cookies but I doubt they're responsible. The mac is from 2011, but ran as good as new until about a month ago.
Any ideas how I can improve it's performance? Just a heads up, I have some vague technical awareness, but it's probably best to treat me like I know nothing. Thanks.

How can I look to see what GB macbook pro I had I ordered the 8gb but on the reciept its saying 2X4GB I just want to make sure I got the 8 and not the 4.

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
The receipt wants to say that you ordered two modules of 4 GB of RAM, so after installing them, you will have 8 GB. If you have already installed this RAM, open  > About this Mac, and check Memory to check the amount of memory your Mac has

  • HOW DO I RESET THE SMC ON MACBOOK PRO

Hi does a nybody know how i can reset the SMC on a brand new MBPro 13inch.320GB,2.4GHz,4GB,RAM? As were having battery problems, after calibrating the battery which was saying 100% fully charged,it now will not charge to 100% anymore plus it wont show the battery in time-mode,just %, & is not right, please can somebody advise us,thankyou

spiritlevel: As I advised you a week ago, you really need to stop obsessing over the battery in your son's MBP.
If you are seeing the battery indicator show 98% or 96% and "Not charging", that's normal. The battery charges to 100% (or occasionally 99% or 98%, particularly if it hasn't been calibrated properly) and then STOPS charging. It doesn't begin charging again until the charge level falls below 95%, and while it's waiting for that to happen, it says "not charging". That's how it's meant to work.
PLEASE read this article carefully with your son:

  • How does one determine the amperage in macbook pro 5,4

I need to replace the battery for my MBP 5,4 and have tried about 4 or 5 by now and none of them are holding a decent charge by which I mean more than an hour or so.  I've tried to educate myself on the meanings of amperage, mAh, watt hours, etc, etc, to determine what I need to look for in a compatible battery that may mean it'll last longer but I'm lost in the technicalities of the electronics field.  Any guidance out there??

Yes, battery manufacturers are very imaginative with their specs (or what they leave out of the specs), you need 60 watts to run your Mac, extra is wasted. What the spec omits is how long the battery can supply it for.
    Buy a genuine Apple one.
You get what you pay for, no more. (especially with expensive batteries)
But I do have one more query, does your Mac run hot?
