How do I find the Library folder on time machine back up disk

I had to rebuild my iMac and wanted to start fresh.  I'm useing mountain lion and had everything backed up with time machine.  The problem that i'm having is that I can't get the aplication support floder to show up in the library folder that you find under user menu.  I know if you hold down the option key while youpull down the go window it will show up on your Mac, but how do I get to the one that is on your time machine backup, useing Moutian Lion?  Thanks for any help.

Once you have the folder open in the Finder, enter Time Machine and you'll see the snapshots of the folder.

You can access the backups of another computer by holding down the option key and selecting "Browse other Time Machine disks" from the Time Machine menu in the menu bar. As for getting to the Library folder, you would have to use something like the free application "Tinker Tool" (not "Tinker Tool System") to make hidden files visible in the Finder, then enter Time Machine.

I lost an xcel doc a couple of days ago. Tried to find the Library folder in Users but not there when I use Finder (even when I do shift-command-G). But when trying to upload a photo in iphoto I found the library folder in Users. I can see my doc in Office 2011 Autorecovery, but can't access it! How do I get User to show Library then I can get to my long lost document?

The auto recovery dat should be in the Microsoft User Data folder in your documents folder, not in the Library. However, I Haven't had to look recently.

If it's the Pre-Shared Key you're looking for, open Airport Utility, under the menu item Base Station, look for Equivalent Network Password.

  • Can't access library folder on Time Machine Backup

I'll try to explain this as clearly as possible...
    1) I have wiped my hard drive and completed a clean install of Mavericks.  I did this due to persistant problems with disc permissions that I could not eliminate.
    2) I did not want to take a chance on introducing problems with migrating a profile from my Time Machine backup so instead of using Migration Assistant, I used Finder to browse the Time Machine backup I made prior to reformatting my drive to simply copy all my necessary data files back onto the drive in my newly created profile.
    3) I've reinstalled the majority of programs I use and everything is looking good (no disk permission problems when I've checked using Disk Utility).
    4) Mail is working just find with all my accounts having been restored using my Apple ID.
    Here's the problem....
I forgot that some of my mail had been stored on my local hard drive.  I beleive this mail should be in my user/library/mail folder of my time machine backup.  However, I cannot access my User/Library folder in Time Machine.  I've tried opening my current (new) User/Library folder in Finder and then selecting "Browse Other Backup Discs" from the Time Machine icon and, although this opens the Time Machine backups, I cannot do any time travel...in other words, although there are many stacks of folders shown in the backup, I cannot move into the past from the present.
Any suggestions on how I can get this Mail folder out of the Time Machine user/library?  I know there is some stuff there that I'm going to have to get to.
    Thanks!

It woked to get me into my current User/Library of my "new" profile but I cannot move back in time into the actual backups despite the timeline increments on the right side of the screen in Time Machine showing they're are backups for the past several months.  I'm stuck on this moment so to speak.
Got to hit the sack...head is swimming.  Thanks for the suggestions Barney.  Let me know if you think of any others.

  • Restoring User Library folder from Time Machine

I have tried finding my User Library folder in Time Machine, but no luck.
I have managed to find the User/Library folder in normal view and have dragged it into the Sidebar.
    It is now visable! Great.
But when I enter Time Machine and go back in time, it goes gray and you connot see it or it will not go back in time.
In other words I am unable to access my backed up files: Address Book, iCal, Mail, Keychains etc.
    Any suggestion much appreciated!

It's a long story. My Mac Apps were crashing frequently as I have an older version MacBook Pro, using it with 10.7.3. It just didn't like it one bit.
Unfortunately, there are many people here in Apple Support Communities who claim there is something fundamentally wrong with Lion and are advising everyone to go back to older versions of the operating system. That is very bad advice. If Lion is misbehaving, there is some problem that needs to be corrected.
It is not a good idea to try to restore your user account piecemeal like this.
If you have erased everything, then at least you don't have to worry about damaging anything. Try this:
    1) Run System Preferences > Users & Groups and click the "+" button to create a new account. Change account type from "Standard" to "Administrator". Give it a short name like "admin".
    2) Log out of your current user and Log in to the new admin user.
    3) Delete any old users you had.
    4) Run Migration Assistant and migrate your old users from Time Machine

Can you browse the Time Machine drive from Finder?
If you can and you know where the picture was stored ie on your desktop you can browse through the folder structure to the picture copy it and paste it somewhere on your new install before right clicking it and 'set as desktop background'

  • Iphoto Library is a time machine back up!!!!  Where are my photos??

Please help.  Yesterday I opened Time Machine for the first time and set it up to do my backups.  I then went to open iphoto (12 hours later) and I got the error message "The iphoto Library is a time machine back up, and so cannot be used as the main library".  How can I get iphoto to work again and where are my photos???  Thanks in advance.

Is it possible that iPhoto is pointing to the wrong iPhoto Library file? First verify that you have a file called iPhoto Library in your pictures folder. Next, while launching iPhoto hold down the option key. You will be prompted to locate your iPhoto Library file (or to create a new library). Make sure that your iPhoto library shows up, and that it's located in your Pictures folder and not somewhere else. Select the iPhoto Library and choose it.
To make sure that your pictures are still in the iPhoto Library file you can hold the control key down while clicking on the iPhoto Library file. If you choose the 'Show Package Contents' option you will be presented with a list of folders. If you open up the folder titled 'Masters' you will see another list of folders by year. Digging deeper you should find your pictures in additional folders listed by month/day/roll. At a minimum this should help you confirm that your pictures are still intact.
If you continue to have issues you might need to give Apple a call. I have successfully used Time Machine for several years without any issues.

  • How do I recover my Bookmarks from a Time Machine Back Up

I just upgraded from a 2 year old MacBook running Snow Leopard to a new MacBook Pro running Lion. Because of the problems Apple has between these 2 operating systems, I can not use the automated Migration Assistant to migrate over any of my old files, user info, or settings to the new machine. I'm having to manually pull over document files and applications from my Time Machine back up disk.
I can't seem to find my Bookmarks from the old computer in my back up files. On the Time Machine drive, I've looked in User, Application Support, Library, amongst many others. Not seeing it anywhere. They don't seem to be in Time Machine at all, or rather they're only there if I do the automated migration for all of my programs and settings. Which of course is not possible, because it leads to massive disk permission errors and a corrupted hard drive on the new machine. One thing I'm realizing i should have done was make a manual back up of my bookmarks in Firefox before I wiped my old machine. If I didn't do this, am I screwed?
If anyone has ideas I would love some help, I really really don't want to lose years of bookmarks.
Oh, and whatever you do, don't buy a Mac with OSX Lion unless you want to waste LOTS of time fixing Apple's mistakes. This whole process has been a disaster so far. There are all kinds of issues with the transition to Lion, I'm 40+ hrs in now. Apple now has their very own version of Vista.

The following has instructions: OS X Mavericks: Restore items backed up with Time Machine
The following is old but specific to iPhoto and may help: iPhoto '11: Restoring from Time Machine with iPhoto '11 (9.2 or later) and OS X Lion 10.7.2 (or later)

Please can any help? I can find the mail folder in my libraries, but the Restore Button is grayed out

OSX treats the reformatted drive as a different one; it's the same as replacing it, and the old one is no longer connected.
See #E3 in  Time Machine - Troubleshooting to see and restore from the "old" drive.
And, you may not want to restore via the Finder; see the blue box in #15 of  Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions.

I have bought a WD My Book World Edition to use for back-up of my iMac, but when I try and log onto the drive with Apple time Machine (back-up software) or connect in any other way I get the message 'There was a problem connecting to the server "MybookWorld.local" The version of the server you are trying to connect to is not supported. It is a brand new iMac and running Lion OSX
Any ideas on how to solve would be gratefully received?

Followed the directions on this page and it worked!
    http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=1102423
Part One - Turn on SSH (in the admin panel)
    [1] Go to to http://mybookworld.local
[2] login: username will be admin, password will be whatever you have setup. If you can't remember it should be in your Mac OS X keychain (Utilities > Keychain Access, search for "mybookworld"). If you have not changed if from the default the password will be admin as well.
    [3] Switch to advanced mode.
[4] From the System tab, pick Advanced.
[5] Enable SSH Access, and click submit.
[6] Click on the network tab and then the LAN button
[7] Make a note of the IP address
Small, maybe obvious, but nevertheless important point: For the install to work, your NAS needs to be connected to a router with internet access.
    Part Two - Install netatalk2.2
    [8] Open Terminal.app (Utilities > Terminal)
[9] Enter the following command (substitute in 127.0.0.1 for the actual IP address you noted down in step 7), then hit return:
    Code:
    ssh [email protected]
[10] When prompted, enter the ssh password (will be welc0me).
[11] You are now going to download the installer. Enter the following command, then hit return:
    Code:
    wget http://mybookworld.wikidot.com/local--files/netatalk2-2-on-whitelight/install_netatalk.sh -O install_netatalk.sh
[12] Once completed, you will need to run the installer. Type:
    Code:
    sh install_netatalk.sh
[13] You will be asked a number of question during install, answer yes to all. When asked about the "DHX2 login process", I opted to install the modified version, so I can confirm it works.
[14] Once the box has restarted, you should be able to connect to your afp shares and continue to use Time Machine.

  • Can I encrypt the time machine back up disk?

I have about 62GB on my time machine back up disk. It just occured to me that anybody who gets a hold of my back up disk, has all my info. Is there anyway to encrypt the back up disk, and password protect it?
If there is will I still be able to use this back up in case of data loss from my computer?
    Thanks.

You can't restore a Time Machine backup made with Snow Leopard onto a system with Tiger. You can, but you will damage Mac OS X.
In order to restore your Time Machine backup, you should have your Snow Leopard disc. Then, insert it and hold the C key while your MacBook Pro is starting. Finally, choose your language, go to Utilities menu (on the menu bar), choose the option to restore the backup and follow its steps, so you will recover Mac OS X Snow Leopard

  • How can I lose the Library folder in my Users folder?

I have Time Machine running and it is doing a good job backing up my mail among other things. It shows my mailboxes as being backed up from a Library folder in my Users folder. However on my Mac the Library folder does not show up in the Users folder. Where one would expect to find it - between Downloads and Movies - there is nothing. Can anyone tell me where it might have gone? Obviously the data within is still there somewhere and Mail is functioning normally. Have I somehow managed to hide it in some security setting?

On OS X Lion and Mountain Lion, ~/Library (being ~ your user folder) is hidden by default. However, you can access to it by two ways. However, you only need one, because you have to unhide the folder.
To unhide the folder, open Terminal and type:
    chflags nohidden ~/Library
Finally, Library will appear on your user folder and you will be able to go to ~/Library/Mail, where mailboxes are saved

  • How do I find the "library button" on my iPad. Trying to synch a MacBook with an IPad

I am trying to find the "library button" on my iPad ITunes screen. Need to synch the iPad to a MacBook to transfer a downloaded movie from MacBook to iPad.

The library refers to iTunes on the Mac - not the iPad. If the movie is in the iTunes library on the Mac, sync it to the iPad using iTunes.
Connect the iPad to the Mac and launch iTunes.
Click on the iPad name on the left side under devices.
Click on the Movies Tab on the right.
Click on the movie that you want to sync
Click on the Sync Movies Heading.
Click on Apply in the lower right corner of iTunes
If you do not see the sidebar in iTunes 11 - go to View>Show Sidebar from the iTunes menu at the top of the screen. Option+Command+S is the keyboard shortcut to enable the sidebar on a Mac.
