How do I find what's using my hard drive space

My wife has a 14" iBook. How do I find what's using all the hard-drive space? It only has a 40GB hard-drive (it's one of the older G3 models) but there isn't a lot loaded onto the HD. There is only 3GB space left. I've gone through every application and utility and document and every folder (document, movie, etc.) and the largest space-hogging folder is iTunes which uses 15GB because of the music. I can't find any singular folder that uses any sizeable HD space. I recently loaded Tiger so I don't know if Tiger uses the rest of the space or if it's just a combo of all the other applications.

You could download and use WhatSize to see what may be eating up the space.
With a 40 GB hard drive, you need to keep at least 6 GB free in order to avoid problems.

  • What is using my hard drive space on my macbook pro

Something is using all my hard drive space and I cannot figure out what.  Yesterday I had 120GB and now I have 120MB free and got a disk warning.  I have noticed this past week that my space has been eaten up.  My Mac Book Pro is 2 months old and I have not put any big or fancy programmes on it as I am still getting used to this being my first Mac.  One of the selling points for getting a Mac is I heard its programmes took a lot less space.  My previous PC that I had for 2 years had a 130GB hard drive and I had 20GB free when I gave it away.  I cannot believe I have used all my 500GB hard drive space when I have only installed a few programmes on this one such as Notebook, Pages, and some accounting software.  I cannot seem to find details of where the space is being used.  Please help.

OmniDiskSweeper is a free utility that checks HD space.
FreeSpace cost $1 or is a free utility that checks HD space.
SpaceControl is a free utility that checks HD space.
FreeSpace cost $.99 -  FreeSpace shows you how much space is available on all local, connected, and network drives with a single click.

  • How do I find what is using up so much space on my 750 gig harddrive

how do I find out what is using so much of my space on my 750 gig hard drive.  i know my pictures take up 147 gigs but I can' figure out how to check other things

When I did that, I could still only see the same contents as shown in the third screenshot above. However, minutes after doing the "Show package contents", iMovie seems to have figured out that it didn't have 15GB of data in its library after all and updated its size accordingly. So, problem solved for now but I still find iMovie to be painful to use and I will probably avoid doing so as much as I can.

    Hi Gibby,
How much free space is on the HD, where has all the space gone?
OmniDiskSweeper is likely the easiest/best, and is now free...

And if needed, you can use Terminal to run it in admin mode to see files/folders your user can't see...

  • How to I find a compatible, more powerful hard drive for my macbook 13 inch late 2008?

How to I find a compatible, more powerful hard drive for my macbook 13 inch late 2008?

There are many sources for compatible 2.5" laptop SATA interface hard drives and SSD's.
I've used Other World Computing (www.macsales.com) for a number of upgrades, and highly recommend them if you're in the US. OWC also posts helpful videos on YouTube showing step by step removal and installation instructions and the tools required for most Mac models. If your old drive is still functioning, but you're simply running out of space, you might also consider purchasing an upgrade kit that includes an external 2.5" drive enclosure with USB interface. Then you first install the new drive in the external enclosure and 'clone' the contents of old drive to it, then swap the old drive for the new one, and use the old drive in the external enclosure as a backup drive, to test new software and OS upgrades, or to store video, photos, and audio.

  • How do I change the settings in quick time player to screen record video using less hard drive space?

how do I change the settings in quick time player to use less hard drive space when performing a screen record? When I screen record a video lets say from vimeo, QTP seems to use a lot of hard drive space.  Please help.  Are there settings some where to adjust to slim down the video size? Thanks for your input.

I just did a short SR test, first I exported to 480p, then I saved the file. Now I have 2 files one 11.9mb (export) and the other 42.8mb (save). I then took the save file and performed an export on it to 480p.  Guess what, it saved at 11.9mb.  So it seemed to save me 3/4 of the space.  Lets see what happens with a 17 minute SR.  Thanks!
Any suggestions on getting the sound louder with the SR?
For anyone else ever seeing this post, for me the best was using an external speaker whether wired or bluetooth, facing the left side of the computer where the internal mic hole is.   Good Luck!

  • How to find what's on your Hard Drive.

I was wondering how to find out what is on your hard drive. I have an issue where I open up evrything that is inside my hard drive and select get info. Everything like library and users and such add up to 58 gigabytes but then my hard drive actual info says that I have used 99 gigabytes. How do I find the other stuff on my hard drive? I would love to have any help with this, thanks.

First off, have you emptied the trash lately? You could have files in there which will still take up space on your hard drive until you empty it. There are also a number of invisible files, but they shouldn't even come close to how much space you are missing. I would think that if you empty the trash, you will recover much of the space you are missing. If not, then you have an issue with your hard drive. You can run disk utilites on it and see if there are any problems. If there are issues, disk utilities can not repair the boot drive. You will have to boot off the install cd. Once it fully boots up, go to the (I believe, tools menu and select the disk utilities option. You will now beable to select your internal drive and repair it.

  • 500 gb hard drive 14 gb available --How do I determine what is using all of the space? Macbook os 10.6

I recently acquired a Macbook that has a 500gb hard drive but I cannot find what is using the space. OS 10,6 installed and I do not have recovery disks. I would like to wipe and re-install/
    Thank you.

Phone AppleCare and order replacement original disks, or if the computer shipped with 10.6.2 or earlier and you don't need the iLife applications, buy a Mac OS X 10.6.3 DVD from the online Apple Store.

Which version of mac os x and photoshop are you using?
How much free space is on your hard drive?
How much ram do you have?
Photoshop needs to use your hard drive for scratch space.
If you have more than one hard drive (not partition), you can assign photoshop's scratch disk to another hard drive.

  • What is taking up hard drive space?

    hello.
I have a power mac (pre intel) quad core desktop running 10.5.8.
I have noticed it being very sluggish lately.
From taking 5 minutes to boot up, to browsers taking longer to launch(with the color wheel spinning longer until the browser is fully ready), to inputing text into fields in a browser window(the text gets entered a second or two after typing). Even when I open a finder window, the icons for every file, as well as the size listing of each file/folder will take like 10 seconds to start loading one at a time. I never noticed that before.
So I opened disk utility, and noticed that I have filled up 160GB out of the 233GB that this hard drive has. That seemed like a really high number.
So I added up the total size of the home folders in all 4 users on this computer, and they add up to 27GB. The system folder is 4 gigs, and the main Library folder at the top level is 51 gigs. I don't think there is anything left. That adds up to 82GBs. Where is the other 78GBs coming from?
I know I'm missing something, but I can't figure out what.
Even still, I don't know that this is the reason for my computer to act sluggish, but now I'm curious how I'm filling up so much hard drive space.
Any thoughts on finding this info out, and/or fixing the sluggish issue?
    Thanks!!

On the space issue, has everybody emptied trash? You each have your own and if somebody doesn't...  There's varous utilities for scanning drives for space usage. Some are free, others not. I think Omnidisksweeper is free.  Search the Discussions for this subject and the others will probably be mentioned.
A few GB are kind of hidden and not accounted for, I think. Some cache files, etc.
160? I mean only 160? That's peanuts by modern standards.
Slow computer. Might start by verifying hard drive with Disk Utility.  Installing and using Applejack would be good too.  Are you sure everybody is logged out and didn't leave a ton of applications running in their account?

  • How do I find what is taking up all the space in my iMovie library?

If I find the my iMovie library in Finder, it's total size is a reported 15.59GB and, as far as I can tell, I cannot open it in Finder to see what files are taking up that space.
If I look at my iMovie library in iMovie, it apparently contains one event, which contains one movie.
If I select the move as then go to File -> Reveal in Finder, I can see all the folders and files associated with the event and they come to a grand total of 5.95 GB.
So, how do I find out what movies, clips or projects are taking up the other ~ 10GB in the iMovie library folder?
    I'm using iMovie 10.0.5

When I did that, I could still only see the same contents as shown in the third screenshot above. However, minutes after doing the "Show package contents", iMovie seems to have figured out that it didn't have 15GB of data in its library after all and updated its size accordingly. • How do I find my airport extreme connected hard drive?

I've connected a hard drive to my airport extreme...but it doesn't appear in my devices list in Finder or on my desktop...what am I doing wrong?

In addition to Kappy's comments, make sure that the drive is formatted as Mac OS Extended (Journaled)  and that you are using a powered USB hub since the port on the AirPort Extreme is under powered.
You won't find the drive under Devices in the Finder.
Instead, look for your AirPort Extreme icon under the SHARED heading on the left of pane when you open the Finder and then click on the AirPort Extreme icon to display a folder representing your drive in the right hand side of the window.
Double click the folder to mount the drive on the desktop.
