    Hey,
You might try deleting all processes related to Acrobat from the Task Manager and then launch Acrobat again.
Also, please repairing Acrobat from the Help menu.
If still you get the same error, then press (Windows+Run) and type "REGEDIT"
Go to "HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\acrobat\shell\open\ddeexec\application" and tell me if the given key is AcroViewA10 or AcroViewR10.

  • Adobe Reader 9.1 - Fatal Error : Acrobat failed to connect a DDE server

    Hi Everyone,
I have some users telling me that when they try to open a pdf attachment in Outlook 2007. Nothing happens. The system just sits there as if you did not click on the attachment. If you wait long enought a popup box from adobe reader comes up and says:
    Fatal Error
Acrobat failed to connect a DDE server.
All the PDFs are very simple, just simple scanned images or converted over from a document into a PDF.
I've tried repairing the install and still had no luck - same behaviour. The only way the pdf opens is if we go into task manager and close the AcroRd32.exe process or logoff and log back in.
If it helps, the most recent system change was the upgrade to IE7 and a new anti-virus software.
    Thanks,
    KEvin

No solution I am afraid but same problem, running full version of AVG and problem hit immediately after Adobe Reader 9.1 upgrade.  Pretty darn sure problem is in the upgrade but the relevant Restore Point was overwritten before I figured it out.  Any advice welcome.

  • "Acrobat Failed to Connect to DDE server"

    Hi
I get a fatal error when I try to open a PDF document by double clicking on it. I am using version 10.1.4.
It just started recently. It was working before. I don't know why it is not working now.

    Hi,
No, the Privileged key is not present at all in HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Adobe\Acrobat Reader\10.0\.
I See a field AdobeViewer in which I see "TrustedMode" set to 0.
Also I noticed that the value for HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\acrobat\shell\open\ddeexec\application is "AcroviewR10" even after the restart.
But What I found was that the shockwave flash plugin is causing some problem with Acrobat reader. WHen ever I enable this plug in I am not able to view the PDF documents and I get the original  error "Failed to connect with DDE server". If I disable the plugin and restart then I am able to view the docs. But I can't browse web sites which need flash plugin. So I dn't know what exactly is the issue here..
    Any more suggestions?

  • What does acrobat failed to connect to DDE server mean?

What does it mean ? Acrobat failed to connect to DDE server

    Hi,
DDE stands for Dynamic Data Exchange, and it is a way for two programs to communicate with each other. http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/windows/desktop/ms648711(v=vs.85).aspx
Adobe Reader, or (Acrobat Standard/Pro) would be an example of a DDE server, in that when they are open they can accept unsolicited communication from client programs.
One client could be the fast launch utility.
Because the DDE server is local to your machine, only a server name needs to be decided upon. For instance prior to version 10 Adobe always used 'Acroview' as it's DDE Server Name. For some reason, Adobe claims 'security', They decided to change the DDE Server name for version 10 to AcroviewR10 for reader, and AcroviewA10 for Acrobat.
Because there was decades of old code which had never needed to change many programs stopped working, and began claiming that they couldn't connect to Acrobat.
Adobe, rightly, claimed that it was a bad practice to hard code the DDE Server name into your code, and that a better practice is to get the value from the Registry.
That would have been helpful but Adobe seems incapable of remembering to update this registry key when upgrading their software, even though they update the setting in their software.
For instance right now Adobe is setting the DDE Server name in the registry to AcroviewR10 for Reader 11. What is worse is that their software only responds to AcroviewR11.
So if you hardcode the server name, or create a function to determine what it should be, than you might be ok, but if you accept their good coding practices your applications will fail to work as expected, and your clients will think it is your fault.
    Hope this helps.

  • Failed to connect to DDE Server Acrobat XI Pro Windows 8.1

I had installed Acrobat XI Pro on a Windows 8.0 notebook computer and it was working fine. When I upgraded to Windows 8.1 a few months ago, I started getting intermittent problems/error messages when I would try to open a pdf file by doubleclicking on the file either in a folder or on the desktop. The file wouldn't open and the error message was "Failed to connect to DDE Server." I can still open the files by doing a File, Open from inside the software, so it's not an insurmountable problem, just annoying.  Any suggestions on how to fix this?

    Hi TreeLady ,
Thanks for posting on forums, DDE server was a part of Windows XP, it was removed from Windows Vista and above. However, if you are getting this error in Acrobat, try the following.
(This error occurs when you have more than 1 process of Acrobat running)
    1) Go to the task manager by presiing Ctrl+Alt+Del
    2) Go to the processes in Task Manager
    3) End all processes related to Acrobat
    4) Launch Acrobat again.
Also, to find the root couse or to isolate the issue you can try the following.
    1) Click on start
    2) Type RUN
    3) Type MSCONFIG
    4) Go to services
    5) Hide all Microsoft services
    6) Disable all Services (Except Microsoft)
    7) Restart your machine
    8) Launch Acrobat to check if you get the issue.
This would help us to understand if Acrobat or any other third party process is not allowing Acrobat process to end causing a conflict .
    Thanks,

Did you register and activate Acrobat? I don't remember the DDE issue off hand, but it should not be occurring with the regular Acrobat installation.

  • Fatal Error: Failed to connect to DDE server

I've read the other posts about this problem, but none seem to fit my situation.
This happened while trying to use a 3rd party program Typhoon AutoRun to test autorun files for CDs of our Ebooks that we're burning. Each of these Ebook CD projects has 6 PDF files to open; 1 Mobipocket, 1 HTML. Of course, the only problem occurs with the PDF files.
Let me start by saying that I was using Acrobat 6 until September, when we upgraded to CS 4, and never experienced this issue.
And after installing Acrobat Pro 9, I hadn't any difficulty until TODAY.
Order of events: I opened a past completed project in Typhoon Autorun to test the file before burning to CD.
When I clicked on one of the PDF document buttons, the first thing that happened was Adobe Active X 9 attempted to run. BUT the Active X failed to install on the first attempt:
    "Error 1904.Module
C:|WINDOWS\system32\Macromed\Flash\Flash9f.ocx failed to register. HRESULT -2147220473. Contact your support personnel."
The Typhoon Autorun program continued operating and opened the project's PDF documents without any difficulty -- all 6 opened, one after the other, when I clicked on their buttons.
I closed out the error message, closed out the Typhoon Autorun project I was testing to work on another Typhoon Autorun project. When I had that one finished, I tested it as I had the one previous.
This time when I clicked on a button to open one of the PDF button, the Adobe Active X 9 program loaded and INSTALLED successfully.
THEN, the PDF document opened. But when I attempted to open any of the other 5, they did nothing. I double-checked my Typhoon Autorun project files, but all of the settings were correct. I tried testing my project again. This time NONE of the PDF files would open.
I closed the Typhoon Autorun program and attempted to open Acrobat Pro 9 immediately after. I tried clicking on the shortcut button several times with no result. After several minutes, literally, I received the "Fatal Error: Failed to connect to DDE server" --- actually, several instances of that message to correspond with all the times I'd attempted to open the program.
I shut down my computer, rebooted, reopend Typhoon Autorun and tried to test a different project.
Again, Adobe Active X 9 installed. (If it's already installed why is it reinsalling???)
And again, only 1 PDF file would open. Then none of the others. I shut down Typhoon Autorun and tried to open Adobe Acrobat again, and it wouldn't open.
The problem seems to be appearing when Adobe Active X 9 installs, and it's doing that automatically, without asking.
I never had this problem when I used Adobe Acrobat 6 (I'm really beginning to regret upgrading)
I never had this problem before this Active X 9 started installing.

  • Windows 8 - failed to connect to DDE server error

I installed Adobe Reader 11 on my new Windows 8 PC.  It would not open properly and gave me the message "Acrobat failed to connect to a DDE server" when I tried to use it.  I uninstalled Adobe Reader 11 and installed Adobe Reader 10.  I am still getting the message "Acrobat failed to connect to a DDE server"  when I try to open the reader and look at a file in Adobe Reader 10.  Is there a compatibility issue with using Adobe Reader in the Windows 8 operating system or do I have a setting configured wrong on my new machine?

    Hey Lisa,
Yep, I'm now having this same issue on Win8 / Adobe Reader 11.0.02 after about a week of perfect function with Adobe Reader set as default association for PDF files (I don't particularly care for Windows Reader).
I simply re-downloaded and reinstalled Adobe Reader 11.0.02 from MajorGeeks (safe repository for many things IT guys need - go here -> for that:  http://www.majorgeeks.com/Adobe_Reader_d3852.html)
I made Adobe Reader default for opening PDF files and then checked to make sure it was working... Worked fine for now anyway.  I have also seen on a number of other systems where Windows Reader seemed to get in the way of proper Adobe Reader function, so in those cases I also reinstall Adobe Reader 11.0.02 and that seemed to repair the issue!
I do hope this works for you, if not, Adobe will, no doubt, release an update shortly.
    Blessings,
    -Daddio
