How do I fix my Hard Drive? The permissions are all messed up.

Hi,
I have been trying for a little while now to do a time machine backup to a GoFlex Home external Hard Drive that I bought from Best Buy. Time Machine fully completed the backup one time but then it started to tell me that it was unable to use that disk anymore and that it was going to start another backup to be secure. Somehow in the process of trying to figure it out and finally mount the drive I deleted the full backup from the external hard drive and now my computer is acting up. All of a sudden it was like my Hard Drive was only acting as the start-up disk version rather than my actual hard drive. I don't know what to do, but I can't lose all of my files. I have already had to restart my computer from safe mode 2 times in the last few weeks and the last time I thought it was a goner. Should I attempt to repair the permissions while rebooting in safe mode or is there anything else I can do?

Under Utilities >> Disk Utilities, you can search the drive for permission errors and then repair then (the button below search).

How can I fix my hard drive?

I have this nag of a PowerBook that I can't seem to fix. Before I send old paint out to the glue factory, I'd like to try to at least try to get some use as a web & email machine for a while. Here's the problems:
1 - CD-DVD drive is shot. Can not install anything from CD-DVD drive. Don't want to invest in a replacement drive.
2 - The somewhat infamous "2007-004 security update" of this past April sort of killed this machines ability to connect to wireless networks. There are many threads on these forums on how machines running 10.3.9 had an adverse reaction to this security update. My machine never recovered.
3 - Can not use PowerBook in target disk mode. It starts up in target disk mode and shows up on my iMac's desktop BUT if I try to access that disk, everything just hangs and I am forced to yank the FW cord after watching the beachball spin for 10 minutes. Same goes for trying to use Disk Utility or DiskWarrior in target disk mode.
I am willing to do a full archive and install on it if I can just do that somehow. Can I try to run Disk Utility or DiskWarrior in some other manner? Or is time to bury Ol Paint?

Well, Gary, it sounds like you've got a mess there. Since you can't fix the hard drive, maybe replacing it is the answer — but only maybe. Given its problems, the Powerbook has essentially no market value as anything but parts, so the only investment in it that might make any sense is a new hard drive, which (installed in a Firewire enclosure) could be used with any other Mac even if it doesn't result in your being able to use this one again. If the present drive has a mechanical problem, that may be why FWTDM doesn't work for you now, and a new drive should take care of that problem.
On the free side, you might consider downloading and installing Security Updates 2007-005 and -006, which have resolved the problems inherent in -004 for most users. (Once bitten, twice shy, I know.)

How do i fix my hard drive ?

my hard drive accepts the cd when i enter it but while its spinning inside the computer the computer ejects the cd.. it wont let me burn any cds, or do anything with the hard drive. i tried updating the pc software and it still doesnt work, any idea on what i can do to get it to work?

Is it just Blank CDs that you have a problem with? What happens when you put in a music CD or a DVD?
I'm confused on if your computer is a iMac or a "PC" since you say you updated the "pc software". Usually, when someone says "PC" they refer to a Windows computer.
Also, this would not be an issue with your "Hard" Drive, but rather a problem with the drive used to read your CDs/DVDs, which is something completely different.

I have backed up my disk using Time Machine. Now I want to delete the backed-up files from my hard drive. But when I do and reconnect the external hard drive, the files are also deleted on that. What do I do?

Time Machine is not a good way to do that, when it eventually needs more room it deletes old Backups to make room.
If you really want to keep Files but remove them from the Internal Drive, then I'd get another external drive to copy or clone them to that is not used for TM.

Yes, that should fix the problem also. As I see it the choice is which do you wish to spend, your time or money. The reformat and reinstall will take much more of your time. It will most likely solve your problem this time. On the other hand DiskWarrior will solve the problem much quicker for some of your money. If you have another problem with your drive, you can use DiskWarrior again to fix it. It is your choice.

How can I keep my Outlook color categories straight? Everytime I restart my computer the categories are all messed up!

I am running iCloud on my Windows 7 PC with Outlook 2007 with my new iPhone 4S. Actually all things sync just fine however all the categories of my appointments in my Calendar in Outlook change color when I restart my computer. I have about 15 categories and I use all things in Outlook first and then allow the sync to put it on my phone. I need my categories to stay the same color and stop changing everytime I open Outlook!
The odd thing is that when I click the appointment in my calendar and open it up the category color is correct but I have to have the category menu open, deselect it then reselect it and it will change back until I restart my computer again. Argh. I use these for business so this is a huge headache for me to deal with!
Solutions? Please, Apple fix this!!!

What really cheeses me off here is that Apple isn't allowing users enough customization. With each update of iTunes (and the OS and iOS) we're forced to give up something that worked well for the way we want to use the app and make do with fewer (and lamer) options. If Apple keeps this up, they're going to start losing customers fast. I mean if this isn't fixed soon, I'm pretty sure I'm going to give up on iTunes, and then I'll probably go ahead and get a Galaxy when I need to replace my iPhone.
What I don't understand about how they won't let users delete the list of available podcasts now is why? How is this making it a better program? I can understand that not all users are capable enough to right-click on a feed and select "Show all available episodes", so I can see why they want the complete list to be the default (and, surprise, it already was). But to not give users the option to delete that list? It's inconsiderate because it makes navigating feeds with a large back catalogue really frustrating. I'm flabbergasted that no one at Apple considered all the podcast feeds that keep hundreds of episodes available when they removed this feature. It smacks of rank incompetence.
What improvement were they trying to make here anyway? There was nothing wrong to my mind about how podcasts were managed in previous versions. Whatever improvement they were trying to make here, they should have realized that many users would at least want the option to keep things the way they were.
And reverting to a previous version is no solution. I can't sync my iPhone with the new iOS without this update, and (while I do have some issues--specifically how you can't play podcasts in the Music app anymore) I do like the new iOS.
