How do i fix my hard drive ?
my hard drive accepts the cd when i enter it but while its spinning inside the computer the computer ejects the cd.. it wont let me burn any cds, or do anything with the hard drive. i tried updating the pc software and it still doesnt work, any idea on what i can do to get it to work?
Is it just Blank CDs that you have a problem with? What happens when you put in a music CD or a DVD?
I'm confused on if your computer is a iMac or a "PC" since you say you updated the "pc software". Usually, when someone says "PC" they refer to a Windows computer.
Also, this would not be an issue with your "Hard" Drive, but rather a problem with the drive used to read your CDs/DVDs, which is something completely different.

I have this nag of a PowerBook that I can't seem to fix. Before I send old paint out to the glue factory, I'd like to try to at least try to get some use as a web & email machine for a while. Here's the problems:
1 - CD-DVD drive is shot. Can not install anything from CD-DVD drive. Don't want to invest in a replacement drive.
2 - The somewhat infamous "2007-004 security update" of this past April sort of killed this machines ability to connect to wireless networks. There are many threads on these forums on how machines running 10.3.9 had an adverse reaction to this security update. My machine never recovered.
3 - Can not use PowerBook in target disk mode. It starts up in target disk mode and shows up on my iMac's desktop BUT if I try to access that disk, everything just hangs and I am forced to yank the FW cord after watching the beachball spin for 10 minutes. Same goes for trying to use Disk Utility or DiskWarrior in target disk mode.
I am willing to do a full archive and install on it if I can just do that somehow. Can I try to run Disk Utility or DiskWarrior in some other manner? Or is time to bury Ol Paint?

Since you can't fix the hard drive, maybe replacing it is the answer — but only maybe. Given its problems, the Powerbook has essentially no market value as anything but parts, so the only investment in it that might make any sense is a new hard drive, which (installed in a Firewire enclosure) could be used with any other Mac even if it doesn't result in your being able to use this one again. If the present drive has a mechanical problem, that may be why FWTDM doesn't work for you now, and a new drive should take care of that problem.
On the free side, you might consider downloading and installing Security Updates 2007-005 and -006, which have resolved the problems inherent in -004 for most users. (Once bitten, twice shy, I know.) -

I have been trying for a little while now to do a time machine backup to a GoFlex Home external Hard Drive that I bought from Best Buy. Time Machine fully completed the backup one time but then it started to tell me that it was unable to use that disk anymore and that it was going to start another backup to be secure. Somehow in the process of trying to figure it out and finally mount the drive I deleted the full backup from the external hard drive and now my computer is acting up. All of a sudden it was like my Hard Drive was only acting as the start-up disk version rather than my actual hard drive. I don't know what to do, but I can't lose all of my files. I have already had to restart my computer from safe mode 2 times in the last few weeks and the last time I thought it was a goner. Should I attempt to repair the permissions while rebooting in safe mode or is there anything else I can do?Under Utilities >> Disk Utilities, you can search the drive for permission errors and then repair then (the button below search).

Yes, that should fix the problem also. As I see it the choice is which do you wish to spend, your time or money. The reformat and reinstall will take much more of your time. It will most likely solve your problem this time. On the other hand DiskWarrior will solve the problem much quicker for some of your money. If you have another problem with your drive, you can use DiskWarrior again to fix it. It is your choice.

Do you mean the SATA connector on the motherboard? Is it broken?
Well, I dont think its easy to fix. If something is broken on the motherboard, then mostly you will need an new motherboard or you would ask an specialist (electronics technician) for help.

Try to clean the cooling ventilators using compressed air spray. Mostly the notebook switches OFF automatically due to higher temperature and cleaning cooling fans can help to get better cooling performance. -

Yes, the red X icon is usually a sign of a bad or damaged hard drive. Sometimes, restoring the iPod will resolve the issue, but rarely. Other users were able to smack the ipod against the side of their leg and gain back full functionality of the iPod.
However, if no such luck with either, your next option would be to replace the drive. For this task, you can either opt to repair and replace the hard drive yourself, or opt to send it into a third party repair business to do the job for you.

4. Same as step 3, but open the “Security Options....” and choose “Zero Out Data” before click Erase. It will take 1 to 2 hours to complete.
5. Eject your iPod and do a Reset
6. Open the iTunes 7 and click “Restore”
For Window computer
Go to folder “My Computer”
Hope you can see your iPod there and right click on the iPod
Choose “Format”. Ensure the settings are at “Default” and that “Quick Format” is not checked
Now select “Format”
Eject your iPod and do a Reset
Open the iTunes 7 and click “Restore”

A. Diagnostic mode solution
If you have tried trouble shooting your iPod to no avail after all the steps above, chances are your iPod has a hardware problem. The iPod's built-in Diagnostic Mode is a quick and easy way to determine if you have a "bad" iPod.
You need to restart your iPod before putting it into Diagnostic Mode. Check that your hold switch is off by sliding the switch away from the headphone jack. Toggle it on and off to be safe.
Press and hold the following combination of buttons simultaneously for approximately 10 seconds to reset the iPod.
iPod 1G to 3G: "Menu" and "Play/Pause"
iPod 4G+ (includes Photo, Nano, Video, and Mini): "Menu" and "Select"
The Apple logo will appear and you should feel the hard drive spinning up. Press and hold the following sequence of buttons:
iPod 1G to 3G: "REW", "FFW" and "Select"
iPod 4G+ (includes Photo, Nano, Video, and Mini): "Back" and "Select"
You will hear an audible chirp sound (3G models and higher) and the Apple logo should appear backwards. You are now in Diagnostic Mode. Navigate the list of tests using "REW" and "FFW". Try to do the 5in1, HDD R/W and HDD scan tests. Some successful cases have been reported after the running the few tests under the Diagnostic mode. In case it does not work in your case, and the scan tests reports show some errors then it proves your iPod has a hardware problem and it needs a repairing service.
B. Format your iPod with a start disk
I have not tried this solution myself, I heard that there were few successful cases that the users managed to get their iPod (you must put your iPod in disk mode before connecting with a computer) mounted by the computer, which was booted by a system startup disk. For Mac, you can use the Disk Utility (on the Tiger OS system disk), for PC user, you can use the window OS system disk. Try to find a way to reformat your iPod, again it does not matter which format (FAT32, NTFS or HFS+) you choose, the key is to erase the corrupted system files on the iPod. Then eject your iPod and do a Reset to switch out from Disk Mode. Reboot your computer at the normal way, connect your iPod back with it, open the iPod updater, and hopefully your iPod will appear there for the Restore.
If none of these steps address the issue, your iPod may need to be repaired.

Wait for 5-10 minutes and reconnecting them back. The reason behind which I can think of is to do a fully reset of a processor of the iPod. Have I tried these myself? No, I am afraid to do it myself as I am squeamish about tinkering inside electronic devices, I have few experiences that either I broke the parts (which are normally tiny or fragile) or failed to put the parts back to the main case. How to run disk utility from your startup DVD.
Insert your startup DVD into your reader. Power down your machine. Hold down to the c key. Power on your machine. This will bootup your startup DVD.
This will bring you to a panel asking you for your language. Pick your language.
You you come to the Install Mac OS panel. Do not install.
Click on Utilities menu item. This will give you a pulldown list of utilities.
Click on the disk utility.
You are now in disk utility. Pick your disk. Click on repair it should be on the lower right of the panel.
Once the repair completes successfully, you should update your permissions.
Verify a disk
As an alternative, you can verify that the filesystem on the disk is correct. You will not be able to repair the file system.
I suggest that you use disk utility to verify that your startup disk is OK.
Macintosh-HD -> Applications -> Utilities -> Disk Utility
Start up disk utility. On the left pane view, you will see a list of all your disks.
Click on your startup disk.
Click on the First Aid Tab.
Click on verify.
Hopefully your disk will verify. If not, you have to boot from your installation DVD and run Disk Utility from there to attempt to repair your file-system. -
How to partition 120 GB hard drive MacBook for OSX+Win (BC+Par.)? Fat/NFTS?
After many happy years with my PowerBook G4 12" (I will miss it definitely, as compact and cute as it is ;-() I'll now switch to a new MacBook 2.16 GHz with 2 GB RAM and a 120 GB hard drive.
I will have to use Windows (not yet sure if XP or Vista), as I need special software not available for the Mac, so my choice will be Parallels, so that I can work in Os X and at the same time use those Windows Apps I need.
However, I also want to be able to boot Windows-only with BootCamp, so I already learned I have to install Windows on its own partition.
So my question is:
How shall I partition the hard drive?
* If I have one big partition for OSX + documents and the rest (maybe 30 or 40 GB) for Windows, I won't be able to access my documents from Windows, right?
* So I would have to keep the data I want to access from within Windows on a PC formatted partition (if I don't want to pay for a software like MacDrive)?
Or can Windows running in Parallels read from a HFS partition?
* Does this mean: if I want to access (read and write) my documents in OSX and Windows, I have to keep them on a Fat32 partition?
-> This could be the partition where Windows is installed (but I'm not sure if I feel comfortable with that solution) of I would need a 3rd partition (Fat32) for data which would cause quite a big "segmentation" of the hard drive.
How did you resolve this problem?
Unfortunately, I don't see that I could really "separate" data I only have to access from Windows and those I only want to access in OS X, so in my opinion for me they all have to be in one place.

I have a late 2008 Macbook Pro last updated to the Mavericks OS. The screen died and I took it into an Apple store and was told replacing the screen and the hardware to repair everything would cost almost as much as buying a new laptop or a cheaper model. I was told that I can use a drive sled to access data I need on my hard drive. How do I remove my hard drive and use a drive sled to get to the information I need? What makes matters more complicated is I need to update my iPhone and my iTunes/App store purchases. How can I accomplish this?

A USB-interface enclosure will be slow, but is adequate for this task and for re-purposing as a backup drive later. A firewire-interface drive would be faster, but is harder to find, more expensive, and faster than needed for this purpose.
The drive will mount as an "extra" drive on your wife's Macbook, and you can drag and drop whatever you wish. You could create a separate Account for yourself on her computer, and use Migration Assistant or just copy your stuff over to the new account. Then it would not interfere with her files. -
