  • How do I fix flashing question-mark-file-icon issue on reboot?

My Mac Book Air 11" has been a bit strange recently, so I decided that a full clean would be a good idea. I had no important files I wanted to keep, so i went ahead and reinstalled the OS. Apparently that doesn't delete everything, so I did some research. Apparently I have to delete the drive. So I did, using the command-r method. I erased my HD and made a new one, but upon reboot I get this flashing-question-mark-file icon. How do I fix this?

After you erased the drive, did you install the OSX?

  • How do I fix folder/question mark

I am using an old G3 tower for some vintage gaming, but when I start it up I only get the folder with question mark. I don't know exactly what version of OS9 it is running, but I know that I don't have the discs. What should I do to get it up and running?

    jv145,
The best way to restore a computer is to have a backup.  There are two ways to back up a system disk.  With one drive, you can create two partitions.  Install the software on one partition and chose a desktop picture or style.  On the second partition, install the same system and chose a different photo or theme.  Then when something happens to the system folder on one partition, the Mac will automatically switch to the second partition and you are back in business.  The reason for choosing a second photo for the desktop is to alert you to the fact that the computer did not start from the original folder.  That is a warning to run Disk First Aid and see what is wrong with the first system folder.
If you have two hard drives, you can do the same thing.  If you have an external firewire drive or SCSI drive, you can also boot off of it.
As for getting back in business, you will need a backup system or backup hard drive.  Post back with the name of a large city near you and we can help you find a Mac User Group.  Someone can help you find your local resources.

  • How do you fix the question mark folder on startup?

My mac keeps showing a question mark when I turn it on.I am not able to even able to run a hardware test.I think this problem happend when my friend tried to update my computer.Any Solutions???

It sounds as if your drives partition structure and/or volume structure may have been fatally damaged. Assuming that is the case you will have to boot from another drive to effect repairs and recovery. If your mini is in warranty or covered under Applecare by far your best option is taking your mini to the nearest Apple Store or Apple Approved Service Provider. (Be sure and phone ahead for an appointment and save yourself a long wait in line until they can work you in.)

  • Satellite C50-A-15Q - arrow, question mark key and z key are not working

I have a Satellite Pro, C50-A-15Q. All keys were working fine yesterday, today I turn the laptop on and the arrow keys, question mark key and z key are all not responding. Any idea how I can fix this?
I have tried turning the laptop off and on, hoping (naively) that this would fix, but to no avail.

As Tom already wrote, it is not easy to say for sure if this malfunction is result of defective keyboard or maybe keyboard controller. In my opinion troublemaker is the keyboard itself.
Have you maybe updated BIOS or done anything that could be responsible for this?
I presume your notebook is pretty new model with valid warranty so best option for you is to contact nearest Toshiba service provider and ask for help.

  • Question mark key doesn't work!!!!!!

I have an HP Pavilion s3700y and have the most bizarre problem.  The question mark key won't work, regardless of what sort of keyboard i use.  Right now i'm using the wired keyboard that came with the system, HP kb-0630.  however i've also used  microsoft and logitech wireless keyboards with the same result.  everything else works fine but when i press the shift key and then the question mark key, nothing happens.  the forward slash underneath works fine but the question mark key is dead.
i'm running out of ways to write only declarative sentences and fear i will need to ask a question sooner or later.  know what i mean (ahhhhh!!!!!)
any help would be greatly appreciated.

How do I fix my left shift key? Any open windows leave and make the desktop visible. I have tired to go into system preferences and reset all of the keyboard settings to default but the issue hasn't gone away.

You are not running as administrator, I think, which may be required and the only way to properly work and register. Also check for compatibility mode settings, UAC and DEP, all of which may require to be adjusted for a legacy app like PS CS2 to run properly. Also turn off Aero and switch to a conventional visual theme. The brush issue may be related to that or is a more generic problem with your graphics card and mouse config, but since you didn't provide any info on that, it will be hard for anyone to advise.

How do I remove the question mark on my dock?
When I move my cursor over it it reads "photos".

Everything in the Dock is an alias.... that is a tiny file that points to the original app, folder or file.
If the original app, folder or file is missing or not accessible in some other way (deleted?), it displays a question mark.
You remove it the same way you remove any icon from the Dock.
Simply drag the icon up away from the doc a couple of inches and let go of it.
It should just disappear with a poof and some clouds.

  • How do I get past question mark on macbook (mid 2007)?

Hello, I am trying to fix a Macbook 13" (mid 2007) for a friend.  I believe the hard drive (120gb 5400rpm) had failed because I could hear the read/write heads clicking.  It was also displaying a flashing folder with a question mark.   I installed a WD Black 320gb 7200rpm drive (I no longer hear a clicking noise) but the system still displays a flashing folder with a question mark - which is understandable since there's no operating system installed.  My problem is that after following the instructions I've read on the internet to boot from the DVD (turn on power while pressing the C key), I still cannot get past the flashing folder with a question mark.  My friend gave me an OS X install DVD (Version 10.6.3 Snow Leopard) that he said he thinks came with the macbook.  I doubt that it did, considering the date on the DVD is 2010 and additinal research indicates the original operating system should have been 10.4.9 or 10.4.10.  Anyway, I've tried  to get the macbook to boot from the DVD and while I can hear it momentarily spin up a couple of times, it eventually ejects the DVD.  I'm not sure if I'm following the correct steps, the version of OS X on the DVD given to me is not compatible with this macbook, or there is something else wrong.  I'm willing to try a few more things to install OS X before accepting defeat and giving it back, so any information would be appreciated.

These are related but not identical issues. Their causes are outlined in Intel-based Mac- Startup sequence and error codes, symbols. Solutions may be found in:
A flashing question mark appears when you start your Mac
Mac OS X- Gray screen appears during startup
In most cases the problems may be caused by one or more of these:
    a. Problem with the computer's PRAM - See Resetting your Mac's PRAM and NVRAM.
    b. Boot drive's directory has been corrupted - Repair with Disk Utility.
    c. Critical system files are damaged or deleted - Reinstall OS X.
    d. The disk drive is physically non-functional - Replace the hard drive.
Note that the information I have provided is what Apple recommends, If other users suggest different solutions than found here, then be sure what they recommend does not impact on your warranty, if any, or ability to get continuing Apple service.
Please don't start removing drives or changing cables unless you know what you are doing and have exhausted other non-invasive alternatives outlined here. If you perform any work yourself that is unapproved by Apple, then you will void any warranty you may have and lose all further Apple Support.
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
The main difference if you are using Lion or Mountain Lion is that you must first boot from the Recovery HD. Simply boot from the Recovery HD to perform the above.
Reinstall Snow Leopard Without Erasing The drive
    1. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. 2. Reinstall Snow Leopard
If the drive is OK then quit DU and return to the installer.  Proceed with reinstalling OS X.  Note that the Snow Leopard installer will not erase your drive or disturb your files.  After installing a fresh copy of OS X the installer will move your Home folder, third-party applications, support items, and network preferences into the newly installed system.
Download and install Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1.
Reinstalling Lion/Mountain Lion Without Erasing The Drive
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the main menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion: Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.

  • Satellite - randomly the arrow keys, question mark key and z key will not work

Sometime the arrow keys, question mark and z key work fine (like now) and sometimes they just don't work at all (like a minute ago).  I will just be typing and they will work and then just stop working, then work again.  They either all work or all do not work. This has been happening since about a week after I got the computer.  It is so annoying.  Can you please help me fix this problem?  I have a Satellite T135-S1309.
    Many thanks.

    Hi,
I've posted recently about keyboard problem, and have tried everything as everybody else, finally and oddly :-) the solution for my problem was to reconnect little flat cable that connects keyboard and MB :-D shown in step 10 on the following link:
    http://www.irisvista.com/tech/laptops/Toshiba-Satellite-X205/take-apart-laptop-2.htm
..so maybe your keyboard somehow strangely detached itself from mother-board just a bit and started creating all sorts of strange problems as mine... one cable line was without contact because flat cable was not attached properly anymore and mentioned keys stop working... I have also downloaded keyboard tester software that helped me find all keys and combination of keys that stop working ... so guys, try that and good luck!

  • Question mark key does not work..... starnge

right, every key but the question mark seems to be working fine. One thing I know, this is an internal malfunction. I connected another keyboard via usb and the same problem persists.
Anyone experience this weirdness before(question mark)
    eg
p.s. every time I try to use it I get a sonar sound only

Open the Speech pane of System Preferences and check whether either the listening key or the speech key has become set to that keystroke; if so, change the setting.
