Click on I tunes and from the drop down menu select ~ SHOW DUPLICATE ITEMS~ a window will open displaying all duplicate songs highlight only the ones that you want to trash. Then Empty trash

Recently got a new computer but when I tried to transfer the files in My Music>iTunes to my new computer I realized that only about half the songs in my library have folders in the iTunes folder, even purchased songs (no idea why). I could download mp3s of every broken song and re-do it that way, but I would rather figure out a way to restore the files from my iPod and save a lot of time.
I enabled disk use on my iPod and dragged the folders from iPod_control>Music to a folder on my desktop but the songs are all assigned random four letter names. I don't know if iTunes will be able to detect the right file to restore each song if I just direct it to this folder (using the prompt when you try to play the song), not to mention that the random songs are broken up into 49 separate folders so I would just have to randomly guess which folder to direct it to (I have 1993 songs). If I drag all the files into iTunes will it just create doubles of each song? I don't care about play counts, I don't know if that's stored in the song file, but it's not a big deal for me to replace all the songs in iTunes with the files from my iPod as long as all the files work.Thank you so much! I now know how to convert AIFF audio files to ACC files, and I can keep the original AIFF file! One other concern though -- how do I tell which is the bigger AIFF file and which is the new smaller ACC file? iTunes doesn't have an obvious place/window that tells me the audio file size. Is there a way to tell the two apart. It looks like it creates an identical file name, not even a "copy" extension or anything -- so it's impossible to tell them apart. Is there another secret here?

What is causing and how do you fix a song stopping during playback? I have latest iTunes 12.0.1 and Yosemite 10.10.1.
It stops then after several seconds (like 25 secs) then it starts again ... and then several seconds later it stops again!

These instructions must be carried out as an administrator. If you have only one user account, you are the administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.
The title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select
SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages
from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar at the top of the screen.
Each message in the log begins with the date and time when it was entered. Scroll back to the time you noted above.
Select the messages entered from then until the end of the episode, or until they start to repeat, whichever comes first.
Copy the messages to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.
The log contains a vast amount of information, almost all of it useless for solving any particular problem. When posting a log extract, be selective. A few dozen lines are almost always more than enough.

iTunes in the Cloud is a feature of your iTunes store account that allows you to redownload or stream your past purchases. When you delete a purchased track that is downloaded to your computer (like the first one shown here) you are asked if you also want to hide the song from iCloud. This would remove it from the computer and also stop it showing up with the iCloud symbol as the other tracks from that album (which are not downloaded) do.
If a track shows with the cloud symbol you can play (stream) it by double-clicking the title, or click the cloud symbol to download a local copy to your library. If you try to delete one of these tracks you get a slightly different message confirming that you want to hide the track. Clicking hide will remove the listing from the library and any other device that shows your past purchases.
Should you want to retrieve any item hidden in this way at a later date use Store > View My Account > iTunes in the Cloud > Hidden Purchases > Manage.
To hide all your previous purchases that are not downloaded to your computer use Edit > Preferences > Store and untick Show iTunes in the Cloud purchases.

i have an itunes library with 1,000+ songs on a pc. my daughter has a macbook air and i loaded my apple ID onto it. how do i get the songs from my itunes account to show up? This works fine on her iPhone, but having trouble on the new macbook air

I would do a transfer of purchases from the phone and not sync. If you sync then it will want to start over and sync music that is on the MacBook Pro. If you want to transfer the music, check out the article below that will give you multiple options on how to move. I have also provided on how to sync with multiple computers.

I follow the instructions and right click on the song and then select "delete" as specified and my info claims at that point it will ask if I want to send this song to my trash bin, but, instead, when I try to delete the song, I get another window asking "are you sure you want to hide this song in iCloud? I don't even know what iCloud is?!?!? I don't want iCloud and just want to get rid of old songs!!! HELP ME!!!

What I have done is effectively used Michael's idea. I'll try to explain a little further.
You can run iTunes match on up to 5 computers, and you can edit the iCloud library on any of them. Michael's idea works on the basis that, whilst you can edit the iTunes library, you can't remove songs from other computers.
I have basically the same setup as you, but I also have a MacBook Air, which is running iTunes Match but without any music downloaded so it all streams.
I added the songs on my main library, which then added them to the cloud. When they appeared on my MacBook I deleted them straight away. As there was no local copy I was asked if I wanted to delete them from the cloud, and I said yes. When I went back to my main computer I found that, as expected, they were still there, but the iCloud status is "removed". They are therefore on my library but not in iCloud.
Since then I have run match updates a couple of times and there is no sign as yet that it will try to add them back to the cloud. It's too early to say that this is a definate answer to your problem, but it looks very hopeful.
Our other discussions have moved onto the 25,000 son limit, which I note from your comment you may also be interested in. Watch this space.
If you don't have access to a second computer to run the other library on then look back at Michael's post where he explains how to set it up on your main computer.

I asked, "how do I get my songs from my itunes library to my ipod?" and you said to sync it to the ipod. I saw that at one time on the left side, but it's not there anymore. I tried clicking on "file" and then on sync, but it didn't work. The word was lighter than the others, so I figured I would not be able to click on it.

From the File menu in iTunes, choose Show Duplicates. iTunes will then list all of the duplicate titles in your library.
If you delete a music in the iTunes folder, then when you try to play that particular music in your iTunes, it won't work as iTunes wouldn't be able to find it. However, when you import music on to your computer, always import straight into your iTunes, no where else. -

How do I delete duplicate songs in my iTunes? I have hundreds and I don't want to delete them one by one. They were all added on the same date, so sorting by the date won't help.
Hi, if this is in regards to your library simply open up itunes and do the following steps:
Click File
Scroll down to "show duplicates"
A list will then appear of your duplicate song titles.
Be sure to CAREFULLY review each song to make sure it is a duplicate ( as I have some music that is the same song but live, acoustic etc...)
Proceed to manually delete each song from the list and leave alone any song that you wish to keep.
