How do I fix the connection issues on my iPod Touch 4th generation to connect to iMessage?

I am getting very frustrated with this iPod Touch 4th generation. I have been using my 2nd generation iPod Touch to use iMessage to text people and use as a 'fake iPhone' because carrying around my cell phone and iPod is annoying.
Basically, I have tried multiple times to change the DNS on every network to the google public server (8.8.8.8) and this does not work.
I attempt to sign in to my Apple ID on iMessage and it says "iMessage Activation: Could not sign in. Please check your network connection and try again." Even though it claims I cannot connect to the internet, I can connect and browse on Safari and other Apps, but iMessage (also Facetime) will never connect or let me sign in. I continually receive that error message that I need to check my network connection. I just don't understand why. iMessage will work on my iPad 3rd gen and my iPod Touch 2nd gen, but not my iPod Touch 4th gen.
I am using my college's WiFi network and it is hit and miss in my building, but both my iPod touch 2nd gen and iPad 3rd gen can receive iMessages and everything fine. I am starting to think that the 4th gen ipod touch just has a crappy wifi receiver or something.
PLEASE help me fix this. I don't know what else to do.
I just updated to iOS 6.1.2 and that did not fix it either.

I know this question is no related directly to your topic, but I wanted to know how did you get imessage in ipod touch 2g. I have one but it doesn't have imessage. I will appreciate your help. Thanks in advance.

hi, when I go to connect my ipod touch 4th generation to the computer an error sign come up which says either "this device is not recognised " or " there has been an error that has occured therefore ipod can not connect" this is problem 1.
problem 2. is that when my ipod does connect, if I bump the chord it logs out straight away and not knowing what is happening I have tried everything like blowing in the connection turning my ipod on and off and even restoring my ipod to its original settings.
Once I restored it a sign in itunes said that it has found an ipod in recovery and to be able to use the ipod with itunes I had to restore and update which I have done many times but nothing is working PLEASE HELP!!!

I have an Ipod touch 4th generation and suddenly it wont connect to my itunes anymore. It will connect to the computer but the device isnt shown on itunes. I cant sync my ipod up with any music or apps or even transfer pictures from my ipod to my computer. I have a Windows XP. Please help. I need my music. I have a 4th generation iPod touch that is about almost 2 years old. I've never dropped it on a hard surface like concrete or hardwood floors, just a few times on my carpet. It's never been scratched, never had water damage or anything like that. It's in pretty good condition, and runs pretty smoothly, except my home button doesn't work!
I know several people with the same iPod who have similar problems - their home button doesn't work. When I'm in an app, like the Music app, and I hit the home button to get back to my home screen, it doesn't work.
I've looked it up on the internet - I've seen several videos on YouTube (like turning the iPod off, entering an original app like Weather or Notes and then holding the lock button down until the "slide to power off" button came up, and then holding the home button down until it went away to 'calibrate' the home button, and locking my iPod and then clicking the lock screen and home button at the same time - which worked for me a few times, but after like a day or two, the button stopped working) and I've also Googled it and heard that rubbing alcohol on a q-tip would clean any gunk out from underneath the home button. I've never tried the alcohol one out of fear that I'd really ruin the button.
I've also read that there might be dust under there or gunk that should be cleaned by a professional...
But my dad says that it's too tight of an area around the button for anything to get lodged under there. I am currently updating the iPod to iO5 or whatever the new update is to see if it makes any difference.
I'm just trying this forum as a last result to see if there is anyone out there with a similar problem that has fixed it themselves to quell the problem permanently. If not, then I suppose I'll be forced to take it to the Apple Store and see if they can fix it.
I did have the 1 year warranty, but alas, I did not start having these problems until recently.
