How do I force a Mac Pro Lion RAID 5 rebuild after replacing a failed drive?

Hi,
My Mac Pro RAID 5 (with Apple RAID controller card and RAID 5 volume with 3 hard disks) showed degraded RAID set message due to failed drive.  After I repalced the failed drive, I was unable to add it back to the RAID set.  So I tried to removed or deleted this RAID set so that I can rebuild the RAID set from scratch.  No matter what I did, I was unable to delete the RAID set using the RAID Utility.  Can anyone help?  Thanks.

I have been posting in this forum several times yet I was not getting any help nor comment on my issue from anyone (except Grant above.  Thanks and appreciate your support).
So I have to help myself by searching various ways to resolve the issue.  I accidentally came across below findings and it solved my problem.  So I thought I will post it here just to share with whoever may run into the same problem.
When I was trying to try to change to another harddisk, I noticed that I made a mistake in mixing up the drives when I put them back.  That is for the last two drive bays(3 & 4), for some reason I put the disks backwards.  That is drive 3 in Bay 4 and drive 4 in Bay 3.  I did not realize that on the drive mount Apple actually labelled them as 1, 2, 3, and 4 respectively for Bay 1 through Bay 4.
With the two disks installed in the wrong sequence and even though one of them is a replacement disk, Apple RAID controller card still boot up the RAID set but showing degraded RAID sets and everthing is normal except it would not allow you to make the replacement disk as a global spare.
After I put the disks in the correct order, I was able to use RAID utility to make the repalcement disk as a spare and the system starting rebudiling the RAID set automatically (thought it took three days to complete).
Now my system is back to normal working.  So the solution is to insure the disks are installed back to the Mac Pro in the same order (sequence including the replacement disk) when the RAID was set up.  This is such a basic matter and I don't know how I missed it.  Hopefully sharing this experience will help someone who may have similar problem.  At lease this is the first thing to check before going any further.

  • Mac Pro RAID 5 not rebuilding after replacing a failed drive?

I have a Raid 5 on a Mac Pro and one of the three drives failed. The RAID set was degraded so I replaced the drive and made it a global spare. At this point the Raid Utility is supposed to try and rebuild the RAID array but nothing happens. Any help?
    Thanks.

It appears that the two drives (drive 2 and 4) that were part of the raid set JBODSet2 are not attached to any raid set now. How do I get the raid set back?

  • Early 2008 Mac Pro won't boot after installing 2nd DVD drive

    All,
I purchased a Pioneer DVR-117D from Mac Sales and after installing it in my new refurbished 2008 Mac Pro it won't boot. My MP will boot if I remove the drive. According to the Mac Sales website this drive should work fine in my MP. Any ideas as to why this is happening. I literally just got my MP today and installed the drive. Is it the drive or the Mac Pro. Thank you all.

The drive was set to master, I switched it to CS before I left for work but haven't tried reinstalling it. I will try when I get back and let you know if it worked. Thank you again.

  • Mac PRo with raid card shipped with drive not suitable for raid?

    Hi all,
I ordered a Mac Pro with raid card and a 1TB hard drive. The drive which came in the computer was WDC WD1001FALS which is not a hard drive rated for raid usage. On Western Digital's site they suggest using WD1002FBYS.
Is the model WD1001FALS the correct drive which Apple ships although one ordered the raid card?

The WD 640GB Blue, and WD 1TB Black are the only drive options for the mac pro; that's what you choose.
The RE3 (or FBYS) is not an option sold through apple. Buying the raid card, is not going to change the drive.
On whether to use the RE3 over the Blacks, it depends on how you will be using it. From what I've heard, the Blacks are enterprise drives themselves; basically with just a less robust firmware (no TLER). If you will have the drives on 24/7 in a raid 5, then yes, RE3 will probably be better. If not, I think the black will suffice; note the blacks are GREAT drives by themselves anyway.
The apple raid card can connect to both SATA and SAS drives internally, however most times people buying the raid card want to use it for SAS drives. There are a lot more cheaper and possibly a lot more stable options then apple's raid card if you are looking to use SATA drives.
    Check amug:
    http://www.amug.org/
A common problem with the apple raid card is the battery:
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/MA849Z/B?mco=NDc1ODczNw
Lastly about enterprise drives, truthfully I don't see the difference really. I have enterprise drives in a 8-drive raid5 config running 24/7 as a server. 2 drives died on me after about 4 months. To top it off, they died within 10 min of each other, crushing the raid to pieces. Granted they were Seagate ES.2's, it's understandable
The boot drive of the server is a stock desktop WD drive and running 24/7. It's been running for almost 4 years straight.

  • How can I 'force' my Macs to look for each other on the network?

OK, I have an iMac with a wired connection to a router, and a MacBook Pro with a wireless connection to the same router. Most of the time, they can 'see' one another on the network, no problem. But, every so often, even after both have been on for a while, I will click the Network icon and the other computer will not appear as available - this happens even when the target computer can see the computer I'm using to try to access it.
So, here's my question: how can I 'force' my Macs to look for (and find) one another on the network?
Thanks... if you need further information, just ask... - beck

If you are using Tiger, go to
Finder menu -> Go -> Connect to Server
Enter the specific IP address of the other Mac where is says +Server Address+. You can find the IP address by running System Profiler or looking at System Preferences Network pane (on the other Mac).
Once you have mounted the volume you to access, make an alias for it and place it in the Dock or on your Desktop. The next time you want to connect to that server, use the alias.

  • How to delete applications from mac pro?

I think many people struggling at "How to delete appalications from Mac pro ,just because you made some mistakes or curious !" I know it is a bit difficut for people who are new users for the Mac .
If you really don't want them ,you can delete them easily,
As all you know after you download appalications from anywhere  ,it could be from apple app store or from other websites. They all can be disspeared if you don't like them .
First , If you installed from apple app store  it will be really easily  just click at the app on the launchpad, after few seconds all the apps will be all shaking like leaves ,yes they are scared .(No No  don't delete me  I am helpful !) Ok yes  that is a little joke ! so what you can see now there is a small "x" at the top right corner .Can you see them ? just click the "x" And they will gone .
Second step. This is only for you downoaded from other websites , In that case  , you just skip first step come to here  in order to save you some golden time .
You can delete them from the launchpad , I have tried many times . i tried to drug them in the the trash . But after them all jump back to where they are , So you need to open the Finder ---> click the download -----> find the file which is belong to the app (make sure ) ------->click it  -----> drug it into the trash. then you can hear a little sound like you through it into the bin. it is really humanny  isn't it ? then go back to the finder again .---->click the application -------> find the icon on there which is you just drag into the trash.  do it again . take this one into the trash as well  then you will find the icon on the launchpad is disppeared . at the end don't forget to empty your trash   After that all job done , it is been deleted  ,
    Well done !
Hope this could help all of your!

  • How can I upgrade my Mac Pro

    Hello,
I have a Mac Pro. Here are the specs :
    Mac OS X 10.5.8
    MacPro1,1
    NVIDIA GeForce 7300 GT
When OS 10.6 came out, I found out that I couldn't upgrade to it because of my graphic card. In the technical specifications it is mentioned that :
    OpenCL
requires one of the following graphics cards or graphics processors:
NVIDIA GeForce 9400M, GeForce 9600M GT, GeForce 8600M GT, GeForce GT 120, GeForce GT 130, GeForce GTX 285, GeForce 8800 GT, GeForce 8800 GS, Quadro FX 4800, Quadro FX5600
    ATI Radeon 4850, Radeon 4870
Now, OS 10.5.8 is becoming more and more outdated. I would like to know how can I upgrade my Mac Pro ? What kind of graphic card can I put in ?
Thank you for any help and/or information !

It's been a while since I've used it but I installed Snow Leopard on my old Mac Pro 1,1 with the 7300GT and it worked. OpenCL may not have but the rest of it did. I don't think what you've quoted says you can't upgrade but only that an upgrade won't deliver all of the features in Snow Leopard. Indeed, I was able to move the HD in the 1,1 Mac Pro into the 5,1 Mac Pro, boot from it (10.6.4 is the minimum the 2010 Mac Pro will boot with), clone it and then updated it.

I know nothing about your printer. However, to use it properly you must Add the printer in Print & Scan preferences.
See OS X Mavericks- Set up a printer. Also, consult the printer's user manual. With the proper setup the printer should print color or b/w automatically. If you have further problems you need to start with the printer HP's tech support.

  • How do I copy the Mac OS Lion after upgrading?

How do I copy the Mac OS Lion after upgrading. I upgraded to OS Lion and now I want to do clean install because my macbook became slower since i installed lion.
    Please, help! Thanks.

You need to get on a Snow Leopard system, log into the App Store with your Apple ID, then download the Lion installer. The re-download is free. After the installer is downloaded it will start automatically. Now, quit the installer. You can now make a copy of the installer that you will find in the Applications folder.
Now, you also may be able to get this to work: Open the App Store application. Hold down the OPTION key while clicking on the Purchases icon in the toolbar. This is supposed to activate the Install button to the right of your Lion purchase entry. Clicking the Install button will then re-download the Lion installer.
