How do I force mail to download older attachments in IMAP?

I'm using (Snow Leopard) Mail to connect to gmail via IMAP.
I'm running out of space and want to archive my gmail messages locally using Mail.
The old gmail messages download and archive nicely, but Mail's leaving the attachments on the server. Is there some way I can force Mail to download all those attachments? There are too many to do it manually.

I don't see an "advanced" tab in preferences. The is one under the "accounts" tab, but it doesn't offer a "Keep(ing) copies of message for offline viewing" option.
Is this a difference between 10.5 and 10.6?

  • Can I force Mail to download ALL RSS feeds from all time?

    When I subscribe to an RSS feed in Mail (OS X Lion) it typically gives the last 20 feeds published. The same happens in Safari.
    This limit is set by Mail and not by the server, because Google Reader can show all historical feeds, right back in time.
    On Mail in Snow Leopard, when you moved the RSS feed to 'Show in Inbox', it downloaded all old RSS posts, rather like rebuilding an email account. However, the same does not happen on Lion.
    Can I force Mail to download ALL RSS feeds from all time?

    Please ignore this question. Or tell me how to delete it.

  • How do I force Mail to use contact names in Address Book?

    I ~need~ Apple Mail to display sender names as I have them in Address Book. My students are Thai and have typed their sender names in Thai, so I can't recognise a thing. I've sorted all the names out in Address Book (in English) but Mail still displays sender names using the email default, rather than the names from Address Book.
    • Upon receiving new mail however, the message's sender name ~WILL~ show up as the name put in Address Book. HOWEVER, after viewing the message the name reverts back to the one specified by the email author!! After that I can't get the name to show up as the Address Book name!
    Is there a toggle somewhere? How do I force Mail to use the contact names from Address Book?

  • How do I prevent Mail from downloading messages from IMAP?

    I just set up Mail to use two of my email accounts for a very limited purpose that requires IMAP. As soon as it got the Gmail one created, Mail started downloading all 3,700 Gmail messages in my folders AND ARCHIVE. The x button did not stop the process. I don't want mail on my laptop hard drive. I set Preferences to "get mail ... manually" on both accounts. When I restarted Mail, it started downloading the rest of the 3,700 plus new stuff in the other account. How do I prevent Mail from ever downloading unless I tell it to? This is what syncing is all about. It sounds like you deleted some mail while logged in on your phone.  This deletes it from the server.  When your Mac synced up with the server, it deleted the mail it had previously downloaded so it would be in sync with what was on the server.  In the old days, assuming you really wanted that mail deleted, you would have had to manually delete it from every device.  Now it does it automatically for you. Similarly, mail you send from your phone will also appear in the sent mail folder on your Mac; you don't have to check all your devices to find that message you sent last month.
    If you haven't already emptied the email trash, you should be able to get those messages back.

    How do I tell mail not to download ALL my messages but rather only the recent ones that are relevant?   I have 4 gmails and a regular imap account.  If mail downloads all my messages it's going to waste 30 GB at least.

    Unchecking Mail will do nothing at all.
    And as Gmail is an Imap account it will download all mail in the account to the client.
    If this is unwanted behaviour use a different email system (a POP system) or remove the mail from the Gmail server.
    Gmail  can be configured as POP or IMAP

  • How do I force a re-download from I tunes store?

    My application, Frog toss, for my I touch, is corrupt. It will not load. SO I unchecked the sync box and it removed it from my I touch.
    Then when I restarted everything (I touch and computer) I re-checked the box.. Now it says the application file is not there.
    And when I went to the I tunes store, it said I downloaded it, but it will not allow me to re-download it.
    How can I force (make) it re-download it?
    I tried a global search on my HD for the file and it got erased somehow..
    Thanks.

  • How do I get Mail to download mail and delete it from the server?

    I don't think Mail is downloading my E-mail from my server to my computer.
    My main e-mail account is set up as a POP mail account and I have it set to: "remove a copy from server after receiving message: right away"
    I have a couple of years of e-mail on my computer and it was getting slower and slower to access many of e-mails. I checked the e-mail account on the server and the file size was huge. I browsed the file and there was a ton of old e-mails in my mail file. I figured this is what was making it really slow to access my e-mails. So I went the the setting in Mail under the advanced tab that says: Remove Now. I clicked it and it took a long long time but then my mail file on the server was emptied. But when I went to access the message in the Mail program I would get this message in italics in the body of the e-mail:
    The message from Kathleen <[email protected]> concerning “Re: Tivo” has not been downloaded from the server. You need to take this account online in order to download it."
    I was online and all my e-mail messages had this exact message (with the name and subject different). Why is that. I thought POP meant it was suppose to download to my computer?

    Verify/repair your disk first (not just permissions), as described here:
    The Repair functions of Disk Utility: what's it all about?
    After having fixed all filesystem issues, if any, and making sure that there's enough space available on the startup disk (a few GB, plus the space needed to make a backup copy of the Mail folder), try this:
    1. Quit Mail if it's running.
    2. In the Finder, go to ~/Library/Mail/. Make a backup copy of this folder, just in case something goes wrong -- e.g. by dragging it to the Desktop while holding the Option (Alt) key down.
    3. Locate Envelope Index and move it to the Trash. If you see an Envelope Index-journal file there, delete it as well.
    4. Open Mail. It will tell you that your mail needs to be "imported". Click Continue and Mail will proceed to re-create Envelope Index -- Mail says it's "importing", but it just re-creates the index if the mailboxes are already in Mail 2.x format.
    BTW, you haven't answered which mailbox has the problem. I could be that just rebuilding that mailbox fixes it -- you should verify/repair the disk and make a backup copy of the Mail folder first, nevertheless, though.
    Note: For those not familiarized with the ~/ notation, it refers to the user's home folder, i.e. ~/Library is the Library folder within the user's home folder.

  • How can i prevent mail from downloading the same messages over and over again?

    is there any way to prevent Mail from downloading the same messages over and over again? Mail has a minimum of "50 recent messages" to download, but i hate having to delete them every time i check for new mail! why doesn't the program remember if you have already downloaded a message, and suppress any subsequent downloads???

    Same issue since Mavericks.

  • How can I force Mail to send email requesting a server DSN?

    I would like mail to send every message with a server DSN request (the RFC1891 type). I found "tech savvy" info on this archived thread:
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/1965944?start=0&tstart=0
    But, I am not a technical person, so, how can I get mail to do this in practise? Or would there be a utility/add-on/plug-in that allows for this?

    First thing to try: go to System Preferences>iCloud and uncheck 'Mail' in the list there. Then re-check it. Give it time to settle in. Go to Mail Preferences>Accounts (not 'Accounts' in the 'Mail' menu) and select your iCloud account. You should see this:
    'Email address' (greyed out) is your login - this should be your @me.com address. The 'Alias' drop-down menu should both versions of your address - @me.com and @icloud.com/ - plus any aliases you have set up.
    (the image is from Mavericks, I would expect Yosemite to be much the same).
    If this hasn't worked, try clicking the Sign Out button in System Preferences>iCloud. It wouldn't hurt to reboot; then sign back in again. Your iCloud synced data will disappear when you sign out but will reappear when you sign back in (give it time).

  • How can I force Mail to ask me to choose outgoing server each time I send an email?

    I work for 3 different companies and I have 3 different mail accounts in my Mail for each of them. It happens to me very often that my email is sent from the wrong account, causing me a lot of trouble. This is of course my human mistake, but I want to limit this and would like to know if there is an option to force Mail to ask me for mail server each time I send an email?

    Mail/Preferences/Accounts/Account/Account Information - try checking use only this server.
    If that doesn't work properly, select the server, click Edit SMTP Server List and set up the server with your e-mail address so each one is named differently. Test.

  • How to prevent Apple Mail from downloading old emails from Yahoo (Imap)

    I started using Apple Mail and decided to use it to access my yahoo mail.  Apple mail worked well in setting up my account but the problem is I have more than 10,000 emails in my yahoo account and Apple mail is downloading each and every one of them.  Even if i choose for it not to download attachments, it will still take a long time to download.  Is there a way or Mail to just download emails starting now, or at least within this year only?

    Good question. I have the same issue. Too many old Yahoo emails. My iMac struggles to download the email to the client and it doesn't work - it seems to time out and stop downloading the old mail.

  • How do i stop Mail from downloading all my old messages without deleting them

    Hello there,
        i've just bought a new 13 inch macbook pro, and i'm very happy with it. Being sort of new to apple i still have some problems though.
    the main one concerns mail:   How do I prevent my laptop from downloading thousands of old messages i had stored on my gmail account?
    let me be clearer: i set mail up and it instantly started downloading tons of old messages that i don't want stored on my mac, since it only has 128gb storage, but i'd still like to be able to look for them in case I needed to.  so i don't want to permanently erase them, get rid of them here to save some space.
    is that possible? and if yes how?
    I also have an other problem with Mail and it's the fact that gmail doesn't let me send pages files...it says it could be a dangerous file so it stops me.
    any solutions?
    thanks to all of you

  • How do I force a file download from a folder above the root?

    I am new to ColdFusion and need some help. I set up a virtual folder on my website and then mapped in the CF9 admin panel to a "Docs" folder above my root, where I would like to store sensitive documents. CF tags are enabled.
    I know that my mapping is set up correctly, because when I set up a cfm page with the following code, I can successfully download the file:
    <cfheader name="Content-Disposition" value="attachment; filename=Calendar.pdf">
    <cfcontent type="application/pdf file=/Docs/Calendar.pdf">
    But what I need is to create one cfm age that will be able to handle downloads of multiple files types and names from the folder above my root.
    I then found Duke Snyder's solution on an older forum for the "click link and download file" question where he suggests making a "download.cfm" page with the following code:  I did this, and named the file "download.cfm"
    <cfsetting enablecfoutputonly="yes">
    <cfheader name="Content-disposition" value="attachment; filename=""#Url.FileName#""">
    <cfcontent type = "foo/bar" file = "/Docs/#Url.FileName#">
    Then Duke suggests: "Now I pass the FileName through the Url and it WILL ask if you want to open or download the file. We accomplish this by making up an eronious file type."
    I then set up a password-protected page on the site that lists the titles of a number of documents, with links to the virtual folder, where they can be downloaded.  One of the links, which goes to "Calendar.pdf" I constructed as: "download.cfm?FileName=Calendar.pdf"  When I click on the link, I get the popup box that says "Do you want to open or save this file?  With the name listed as: "download.cfm?Filename=Calendar_pdf"
    When I click "Save", I get the message: "Internet Explorer cannot download download.cfm from www.... Internet Explorer was not able to open this Internet site.  The requested site is either unavailable or cannot be found. Please try again later.
    I must have constructed the link incorrectly. Any ideas?  Thanks in advance for your help.

    I am trying to force the download of pdf files from a folder above the root.  The file below is named "download.cfm"  I pass the name of the file (Calendar.pdf) in the URL link, as follows: download.cfm?filename=Calender.pdf
    In the ColdFusion admin panel, I mapped a folder in the root "Docs"  to point to a folder with a different name above the root.   I have tried the code below, which was generously supplied by another member of this forum, but it does not seem to recognize the CF mapping. Do I need to use another CF Tag for the mapping to working correctly?
    <cfsetting enablecfoutputonly="yes">
    <cfheader name="Content-disposition" value="attachment; filename=""#Url.FileName#""">
    <cfcontent type = "application/pdf" file = "/Docs/#Url.FileName#">
    Thanks for your help
