How do I force terminate PPP connection?

My PPPoE is set to "Connect automatically when needed", and my login items include Dropbox. Therefore my MBP automatically tries to connect to PPPoE every time when it wakes up from sleep. However, most of the time the connection would fail, staying in the "Connecting..." status forever; no internet available. To terminate this awkward status I clicked "Disconnect", then it just switched to "Disconnecting…" and stayed there forever, not allowing me to reconnect. The problem can be solved only by rebooting the computer, and can be avoided if I disable "Connect automatically when needed" (manual connection always works).
If I want to have "Connect automatically when needed" enabled, how do I force terminate and retry the connection everytiwhen it fails?

You could try, in Network Preferences, selecting the PPPoE service then use the drop-down menu at the bottom of the panel and choose Make Service Inactive.
Would it not be better to remove Dropbox from your login items?

  • How to force a video connection?

We have a mixed environment with a CCM 5 and an old PBX (ericsson BP250) with a qsig connection.
When a videocall between Cisco Phones is forwarded on an Ericsson phone, it is forced to be an audiocall (qsig doesn't support video calls)
If it's forwarded again on a Cisco phone, how can I force the video connection?
    Thanks

Are you stating that a video call gets transferred to the PBX and then back to CCM? Of course the video goes away, you transferred the call through an analog only PBX integration.
Even with Q.SIG path replacement working correctly, this may not work, but is worth a try. Be sure that path replacement for tromboned call routing is enabled on the PBX and in CCM (global settings, route patterns, translation patterns, partitions, CSSs)...
Are the video endpoints SCCP (skinny, i.e. Cisco, Tandberg, Sony) or H323?
What partition are the phones and PBX trunks in?
What CSS are the phone extensions in?

  • Forcing OSx to connect 2 Macs using FW or Ethernet rather than via Airport

Moving larger files via an airport network obviously is rather slow. The solution appears to connect via Firewire or Ethernet when sending larger collections of files.
Setup: Macs are connected via an airport network. All Macs have been assigned static IP addresses (10.0.1.201, ...)
Problem: When connecting two Macs via Firewire or Ethernet, the Macs still appear to prefer a connection via the Airport network rather then Firewire or Ethernet. In order to get around this problem, I usually just turn off the Airport network and thereby force OSx to take the connection via Firewire or ethernet.
Question: How can I force OSx to connect both Macs via Firewire or Ethernet without disconnecting from the Airport network?
Failed attempts: I tried to assign different IPs to the Macs in Network > Integrated Firewire, i.e. Mac1's IP in the Airport network is 10.0.1.201. In integrated Firewire, I assigned 10.0.1.212 to Mac1 and tried to connect to it from Mac2 using that IP and which is connected to Mac1 using a Firewire cable. Didn't work
Does anyone have any experience in this? Any advice is greatly appreciated!

    Hello,
You can reorder network ports in Network Preferences.
Go to "Show > Network Port Configurations" then drag & drop ports so that ethernet and firewire are first in the list.
Now the default route should be via the first connected device.
    Why reward points ?

  • If I am connected to Wifi and send an iMessage to a party that is not connected to the Internet then he doesn't receive the message. How do I force my iPhone to send an SMS instead?

If I am connected to Wifi and send an iMessage to a party that is not connected to the Internet then he doesn't receive the message. How do I force my iPhone to send an SMS instead?

It is an interesting option but I am not sure how it works. I disconnected the other party Wifi and 3G on the iPhone, iPad and computer. I sent the iMessage 15 minutes ago and it doesn't give the small foot print "delivered" but equally said I didn't get the RED exclamation mark on the right hand side of the message in BLUE. So we know that the message was sent but not delivered. I don't seem to have the option of sending by SMS when I tap on the BLUE message and hold.

  • Time Capsule and Time Machine: How can I force Ethernet Connection for the first backup ?

    Hi,
How can I force the Time Capsule - Time Machine Couple to communicate via an Ethernet cable for the initial backup without changing the wi-fi configuration of the Time Capsule?
I do not want to change the wi-fi configuration of the TC because it appeared that I was not able to restaure it proprerly after a first "ethernet backup".
Please note that I do not want to use my TC to extend my wi-fi network nor create a new one. But, when I disable the wi-fi on the TC, as I want to restaure it, I only can see "expend" or "create a network" options within the wirless config page of AirPort Utlity; "Connect to a network" is not shown in the list!
Thx a lot for your attention,

You MUST change the TC mode to something other than join a wireless network.. because in that mode, TC turns off the ethernet ports.
The join a wireless network is hidden option because apple do not support it and it works poorly.
You can access it by holding down the option key.
You can also save the current settings and restore them after you finish the ethernet backup.
Please note using join means double hop wireless and your TC data speed to the Mac will be extremely slow.. this will also affect your other internet connections and any other computers on the wireless network as it will use most of the capacity for much longer period than directly connecting to the TC.
Basically that is why Apple do not support it.. it is lousy way to work a TC in a network.

  • Netstat -a   How do I terminate those connections?

    Hi
I am having tremendous problems with my internet. After just a few minutes when restarting my modem & router (I have Virgin Cable broadband) the internet is at a speed of just above 4Mbps on a supposid 20MB connection, the internet latency goes from between 30-40 to over 900 sometimes upto 2000!
I called Virgin who asked me to do a netstat -a on my "dos prompt" on my mac by typing in cmd (god I hate it when they don't support any other OS from windows!!!) from which the results showed there were over 16 IPs with active connections running, they then told me that's the problem and to contact Apple to close the connections which are active "within the computer hardware".
Now, I don't know an awful lot about the terminal interface in Mac and I certainly can't find a simple answer in google about how to close off these active connections.
Can someone lend a hand in whether these are active "hardware connections" and if I can indeed close them?! My speed/latency is awful which is making my experience on Modern Warefare2 terrible!! :o(
    Many thanks in advance

BUT I would not believe what they told you. I have more than 16 open connections on my mac and it's internet is just fine.
Unless you have a buggy application, some of these connections I would bet are normal.
Try rebooting without any startup app, see if it's still happens. If it does, your problem might just be THEIR problem.

  • How do I force-eject a CD when I cannot even get to the start-up screen?

Friends, Let me first apologize for getting myself into this mess, in the first place.
I bought a second-hand iBook G4 in the U.S., for a friend of mine, and brought it to South America, where I am living for one year, but far from any Mac Repair Center. I am getting the computer ready, to give to my friend, as a gift.
The computer was working perfectly here for the few weeks that I have had it. It has OS 10.3.9 installed, but no OS9. I wanted to install OS9, so that I could give my friend some older software to use with it.
(In fact, I inserted the software CDROM that I was going to give to my friend, into the second computer, to install the program before giving him the disk also. This was an important mistake.)
Moreover, the OS9 disk that came with this second "new" computer does not appear to be the same one that shipped with the computer originally. Consequently, when I tried to install OS9 Classic, it would not install correctly from this disk (although it was indeed made for installing OS9 to another iBookG4, but not this one, apparently.)
Consequently, as a short-cut, I simply copied my own Classic "system folder" from my own (completely) identical iBookG4, transferred it to a pen drive, and was going to move it to the second computer. Not all of the files copied successfully, however (some printer descriptions, for example), but most of them did.
So, I transferred what I could, in the meantime, and now I had a new Classic "system folder" on the second computer.
When starting up the Mac Classic environment there, however, the Classic environment would crash, and in that case I would just close the Classic environment altogether and continue normally in OSX mode, trying to solve the problem. I realized that my "copy" was not good enough.
Then I got the idea to make an "archive" of the original classic folder on my own computer, and then transfer the archive, to see if it would make a more perfect copy this way. It archived perfectly indeed, and at half the size, so I assumed that I would now have all the necessary documents, once it was transferred and decompressed onto the second computer.
Meanwhile, I decided to erase the incomplete corrupt copy of the (classic) system folder on the second computer, to avoid confusion when the new copy was transferred. As I moved it to the trash, the computer told me that it was being used by the system, and that it therefore could not be deleted. Since the classic environment was not running, I assumed that this was some sort of error, meant to protect the folder from accidental deletion regardless of the circumstances. Consequently I re-named the folder, and then deleted it successfully, and received no error message.
I went back to the first computer, to copy the new, archived classic folder to my pen drive. When I did, and returned to the second computer, I noticed that the screen was black there, but the disk, still spinning.
I checked to see if it was the display, or the connection, or if the computer was sleeping, or the screen saver activated, but none was the case.
I re-booted, but there was no start-up chime. The disk spun normally (or perhaps more loudly than normal).
I re-booted, holding down P and R, but no results. The display was completely black (i.e., no ilumination whatsoever, not merely a dark screen, but rather black).
I concluded that the source of the problem was what I had done with the classic folder (renaming it or deleting it).
I got the idea of inserting the system disk, to reboot from the CDROM, but the problem was that there was already a software disk inside, and it would not eject when the eject button was pushed.
I found some suggestions online. I rebooted holding down the track-pad button, for example. No results.
I rebooted holding down CMD OPT SHIFT O F, (or whatever the combinations were that were suggested). No results. I cannot even get a terminal screen to appear, much less a gray screen.
If I close the lid while the computer is running, the computer will NOT go into sleep mode. (So much for the suggestion about forcing an eject from sleep mode).
I noticed a comment online that there might be a force-eject hole inside the felt, but I do not know how to move the felt back well enough to see, nor do I know where to look, or whether there is even such a hole on this model. (if you know of a diagram or photograph online, please direct me)
(Incidentally, if it is any help regarding the model, it is of serial no. UV445CLX_ _ _ , assembled in Taiwan)
How can I force eject the CDROM inside?
Is the solution to reboot from the system software disk, once I succeed in ejecting the CDROM?

You cannot boot an iBook from an external USB drive--only a firewire drive. Actually, the drive is just a drive--it is the enclosure that determines USB vs. FireWire. If you could find an appropriate firewire enclosure, you could remove the drive from the USB enclosure and place it in a firewire enclosure and then be able to boot from that. Or you could just purchase an external firewire drive if those are available where you are.
FireWire external drives are quite useful. One option would be to mount the external drive on the good iBook, format it properly for OS X with Disk Utility, and then use a program like Super Duper to make an exact clone of your internal hard drive. This is a popular way of backing up your stuff. You can boot from either the internal or the external. This means that if your internal hard drive were to die, you would have all your stuff on the external, and could run off of that. Since you are already using the USB for backup, it would probably be best to acquire a new firewire drive for troubleshooting and testing if you decide to go this route, since you really don't want to lose your existing backup.
If you did have a bootable clone, you could see if the sick iBook would boot from it or not. However, it may be more productive to pursue your other thread about the boot problem. I see that Richard has joined the thread as I had hoped he would. He actually works on iBooks and is very knowledgeable.
Also, if you do get the second ibook working and want to install OS9, you might want to post a question in the "Mac OS X v 10.3 Panther and earlier" forum. I'm not up on this myself, but I believe there is something about installing OS 9 drivers while formating or something like that. I believe the smart guys on that forum could give you some guidance so that you can avoid the problems you encountered earlier.
    Good luck!

  • Touch screen stopped working. Is there anyway to force a full backup of the iPhone without typing in my passcode lock or is there anyway to force it to connect to a WiFi network so the phone can backup to iCloud??

Hello all, I could use some help with my iPhone 4, I hope this is the best place to ask!
    The Problem:
I want to do a full backup of my iphone to either itunes or to icloud. Unfortunately the iphone got wet and isn’t working properly. The phone turns on and still works, but the touch screen no longer works. I have a passcode lock on the phone so iTunes will not allow me to backup it up until I type in the passcode (which I cannot physically do). WiFi had been turned off before it got wet so it won’t connect to any known WiFi networks either to backup automatically to iCloud.
    What happened:
I had been travelling for 6 months and went tubing on a river with my iphone in a dry bag. Unfortunately the dry bag failed and filled with water ruining my iphone.
    What I’d like to do:
It’s an old phone and I was planning on buying a new iPhone anyway. I would love to do a full backup to either iCloud or to my computer so when I get a new iPhone I don’t lose anything. I’ve already connected it to my PC and downloaded all the photos and videos off the phone so at least I haven’t lost that, but I would like to be able to recover all the text messages, WhatsApp messages and notes I had created during my 6 months of travel.
The last time it was backed up to my pc or to icloud was in April, so there are 6 months worth of very meaningful data I would love to keep to remind me of my travels!
Is there anyway to force a full backup of the iPhone without typing in my passcode lock or is there anyway to force it to connect to a WiFi network so the phone can backup to iCloud??
iTunes recognizes the phone just now and I tried upgrading the phone to iOS7 in the hopes that it would first backup and then upgrade. Unfortunately all that happened is the phone upgraded to iOS7, but it didn’t backup to iTunes. Now the phone is stuck at the iOS7 welcome screen and I can’t do anything else with it.
Any ideas or tips would be welcome!
NOTE: This is NOT a jailbroken iPhone.

If there is no other way around this, is there anyway to completely wipe the phone then??
The Apple store agreed to give me a new iPhone 4 as a warranty replacement for $150 (I travel a lot and I have a factory unlocked phone, so this is still worth it for me).  But before I trade it in, I would like to make sure all my data is backed up on the device first.
When I try and restore the phone now on iTunes, it says I have to turn off Find My iPhone on the phone first before I can restore it.  Now since I can't use the screen I can't really do that.
So how do I completely wipe the iPhone???
    Thanks!

  • How can I 'force' my Macs to look for each other on the network?

OK, I have an iMac with a wired connection to a router, and a MacBook Pro with a wireless connection to the same router. Most of the time, they can 'see' one another on the network, no problem. But, every so often, even after both have been on for a while, I will click the Network icon and the other computer will not appear as available - this happens even when the target computer can see the computer I'm using to try to access it.
So, here's my question: how can I 'force' my Macs to look for (and find) one another on the network?
Thanks... if you need further information, just ask... - beck

If you are using Tiger, go to
Finder menu -> Go -> Connect to Server
Enter the specific IP address of the other Mac where is says +Server Address+. You can find the IP address by running System Profiler or looking at System Preferences Network pane (on the other Mac).
Once you have mounted the volume you to access, make an alias for it and place it in the Dock or on your Desktop. The next time you want to connect to that server, use the alias.

    Hi there Rlong50,
You may want to try force closing all open apps and resetting the device as an initial troubleshooting step. Take a look at the articles below for more information.

  • Itunes and proxy settings. Itunes keeps the proxy setting from IE and I can't adapt it due to company policy. How can I force itunes to use firefox?

itunes can not connect to server and I can't find its proxy settings.
So I think it uses these from IE and those are blocked by company policy.
So, how can I force itunes to use the firefox settings

I fixed this issue (with help from tech support) and it involved several things.
After adding a song to iTunes, right-click on the song in iTunes and select "Update iTunes Match."
OR go to the iTunes menu-->Store-->Update iTunes Match.
Maybe that's the reason, it just hadn't updated to the cloud.
OR maybe it's not a high-enough bitrate file.   This happens to me because most of my tunes are home-recorded.
Sometimes converting to .mp3 or Create AAC version might work. (You do this with a right-click in iTunes, and then you will want to remove the original file from iTunes.)
There is an iTunes Preferences setting, under General Preferences called Import Settings.  Try setting it to AAC Encoder and iTunes Plus.   That (I think) causes imports to be slightly better quality.
Good luck!  The tech support person at Apple is requesting that a knowlege-base article be written about this.

  • WiFi:  How do I force a "Forget this network"

I have a network where the temporary password has expired.  When I walk into the building, the iPhone tries to connect.  I'd like to forget the network, but i can't forget it until I successfully login.  But i can't login in bacause the password has expired.
So how do you force a forget when you can't login to the network first?

I think that is overkill ...
If you go into Settings/Wi-Fi, then tap the arrow to the right of the network name it should bring up the network's settings. In there you'll see a "Forget this Network" option. You do not have to be logged into this network to do this.

  • Wireless Mesh topology parent child optimization. How do you force a reconfig?

    Release 6 controller
    9 Mesh APs. 1524 (2x 5G radios, 1x 2.4G)  and 1522 (1x 5G radios, 1x 2.4G)
Designed for 3 linear hops and then a split to the rest.
    AP1 = Root AP
    linear to
    AP2
    Linear to
    AP3
    Linear to
    AP4
    equidistant to
    AP5 and AP6
The rest are further away from AP4, but have visibility back to AP 4
The issue is after an event (say a power outage) at AP4.
    AP5 uses AP3 as it's parent.
That's okay during the power failure, but when AP4 comes back up, I want to force AP5 to switch it's parent to AP4.
You may ask why, if AP5 can reach AP3 okay, it's okay to leave it that way.
    Well, doing link tests...
    test   --------packet loss %-----
    speed  AP3toAP5 AP3toAP4  AP5-AP4
    =====  =======  =======   =======
    54M     100        0         0
    48M     100        0         0
    36M      52.6      0         0
    24M       1.44     0         0
    18M       0.89     0         0
So you can see it's desireable now that AP5 uses AP4 as it's parent.
Over time, the system might figure it out, but our limited experience shows it seems to stick to the way it is.
To complicate matters, sometimes we've found that it doesn't seem to reconfigure when the channel number has changed so AP5 can reach AP3, but AP4 (1524) comes up with a different channel on it's downlink radio.
So, how can we force a mesh topology reevaluation/change for either 1 AP or the whole bridge group?
I thought changing the bridge speed from "auto" to 54M (on AP3 above, for example) might force the attached children to rethink it, but it didn't seem to work (maybe I needed to wait an hour?).
I also thought tweaks to "Radio Performance Profile" for radio might help. (not sure what to change, or how long to wait for a result)
suggestions on how to quickly reconverge?
reseting APs and hoping they come back in a better topology is painful and slow.
    Thanks - Glen

Glen, I know this is a very old topic but we are suffering from similar conditions on our end.  Even using directional antennas we are having a difficult time having the Mesh network consistently optimize itself.  Did you guys ever find a tweak that worked for you to have the system re-evaluate the connection by packet loss on speed?
    Thanks!

  • How can I force specific devices to use a specific Airport Express?

I have an Airport Extreme router on the main level of my three level house. I have a 1st Generation Airport Express on the same level, extending my wireless network and acting as an airplay device.
I have added another Airport Express (2nd Generation) in my basement to be close to several wifi-ready devices (Wii, AV receiver, Blu-ray player). How can I force these particular devices to connect to the new and 'closest' device, just 20 feet away? Some, but not all, are connecting still to my Airport Extreme with a 'good/average' connection. Specifically, I'd like to force the blu-ray player to use my new Express, to eliminate buffering on my blu-ray player (Vudu - movie rentals).
    Suggestions?

It might help to remember that the AirPort Express...or any other "extending" device....can only extend the quality of signal that it receives.
So the trick is to get the best signal possible to the extending device......and also....have it provide a good signal for other devices.  It's a compromise at best with the best location for the "extending" device about half the distance between the main router and the devices that need more wireless signal.
This assumes no major obstructions in the signal path.....and unfortunately a floor/ceiling is a major obstruction....often the thickest barrier in a home.
Unfortunately, users tend to locate the extending device where they feel that they need more wireless coverage....in a weak signal area....and then the extending device receives a weak signal and extends that weak signal quality.  The result is little or no improvement at all.
It is going to take some experimentation to find the best compromise if you want to extend using wireless only. Even a good connection results in half of the bandwidth being lost, so you might want to think about a "Plan B" in case wireless will not deliver the bandwidth that you need.
