  • How can I delete all the Time Machine backups to make room for more? And how do I force the trash to empty?

    I moved a bunch of my husband's files from his Macbook (which is dieing) to my iMac.  I created a user for him on my iMac so he'd be able to keep his stuff separate from mine.  All is working great except my Time Machine is now unable to backup.  The total of used space on my hard drive (including the recently added user's files) is about 420 GB.  The amount of capacity of my external hard drive is 999GB.  I think Time Machine failed because there was all of a sudden so much more data and a new full backup would be more than the unused capacity of the HD?  Regardless I don't need any old backups.  I have all my files and all his files.  So I moved all the backups from the external HD to the trash.  Apparently that's a no no.  I can't fully empty the trash now and that is making my iMac crazy slow.
    1) Can anyone tell me how to force the trash to empty?
    2) Is there a way to delete the whole external HD and start over with a new full backup via Time Machine?  In Disk Utility I try to erase the partition and get an error "Volume Erase failed with the error: Couldn't unmount disk." Then I try to Unmount it and get another "Unmount failed. The disk Backup iOmega could not be unmounted.  Make sure that all applications and files are closed on this disk." I turned off Time Machine and tried again but with the same errors.
    The external HD is called iOmega.  It only connects to the iMac with USB.  Any help is much appreciated!!!!

    Try this instead:
    Drive Partition and Format
    1. Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.
    2. Select the backup volume from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
    3. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.)
    4. Click on the Erase button.
    You will need to reconfigure Time Machine preferences for the backup.
    FYI: Never remove Time Machine backup data except through the Time Machine application. If you aren't sure about using Time Machine then visit Pondini's Time Machine FAQ for help with all things related to Time Machine.

  • Does anybody know how to reinstall System Preferences? I accidentaly put System Preferences in the trash and emptied the trash :P

    Does anybody know how to get System Preferences? A couple of weeks ago I put it in the trash and emptied it. Does anyone know how to reinstall it?

    How Restore Deleted or Missing OS X Components
    A few of the basic OS X installed applications can be restored from the Optional Installs installer located in the Optional installs folder on your Installer DVD.  However, if what you need is not there then follow the instructions below.
    How to Use Pacifist to Restore Deleted or Missing OS X Components
    Insert the OS X Installer DVD into the optical drive.  Use a simple utility like TinkerTool to toggle invisibility so you can see invisible items.  Alternatively, open the Terminal application in your Utilities folder and at the prompt enter the following:
    defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles Yes
    Press RETURN.
    To turn off the display of invisible files repeat the above command substituting No for Yes.
    The install packages are located in the /System/Installation/ folder on the DVD.
    Download the shareware utility Pacifist. Use it to extract a fresh copy of the missing item(s) from the file archives on your OS X installation DVD. The file archives are in the /System/Installations/ folder (use Go to Folder option in the Go menu of the Finder.)
    Here are Four Basic ways to use Pacifist (courtesy of George Orville.)
      A. Drag a .pkg icon onto the Pacifist window .....proceed to step 7.
      B. Click on “Open Package ....” and navigate to package desired and click “Open” in
           the open/save window.....proceed to step 7.
      C. Insert Mac OS X installer CD and when it mounts, navigate to .... Menu->Go->Go
           to Folder. In the path field enter or paste ....
    /Volumes/disc name/System/Installation/Packages (where disc name is the name of the CD/DVD that you inserted.)
    Click on the  "Go" button ..... • Drag a .pkg to Pacifist..... proceed to step 7.
    The package you'll need will have to be discovered by trial and error, but for most applications you should start with the Essentials.pkg and/or Additional Essentials.pkg.
    D. Insert your Mac OS X install disk 1 .... and open Pacifist.
    1. In Pacifist, select "Open Mac OS X Install Packages" ... dialog may appear asking for disk 2, then disk 3 and finally disk 1 again.... {if DVD is not used)...If “Stop Loading” is selected...the procedure will stop!!!
    2a. When loading is complete, a new window appears, click the triangle to display contents of each package...Select item and proceed to step 7.
    2b. or click the “Find” icon in the Pacifist window and type the name of the software you need.
    3. In the list that comes back, click the top most entry for the item that you want. ..... that is the one for the English language.
    4. On the top of the Pacifist window, click “verify” .... you will probably be prompted for your password.
    5. Enter checks for.... “verify permissions” and “verify file contents.” and click “verify” ....enter password when prompted.... you will get back output which may look like this:
      20 files were scanned. 20 of 20 files were present on the hard disk. 0 of 20 files had file permissions that did not match those specified in the package. 0 of 20 files had checksums that did not match those specified in the package.
    6. Click “close”. Go to step 7.
    Extract or Install........
    7. In the Toolbar (upper left), you now have the option to extract or install. Click a file in the lower list and those two icons will be enabled.
    8. If “Extract to...” is selected.... navigate to the location where the file will be placed, select “choose”, select “extract” in new dialog that appears,authenicate , if prompted, click “OK”.
    9. In the next dialog, click “Extract”.
    10. If “Install” is selected... dialog will appear with the location/path of the installed software. Click “Install”
    11. Type in your password, click “OK”
    Pacifist will begin to extract files.
    12. In steps 8/10ß.... you also have the choice to “cancel”
    Notes: Pacifist may find that a file it is installing already exists on the hard disk. Pacifist will present you with an alert panel....
      • Stop
      • Leave original alone
      • Update .....
      • Default selection
      • Replace .... (Replace option should only be used on full install packages)

  • Hi, i have deleted accidentally some photos and the trash is empty. How can I recover them? Urgentlyyy

    Hi, i have deleted accidentally some photos and the trash is empty. How can I recover them? Urgentlyyy

    Which trash is empty? If it's the iPhoto trash, check the System Trash, as files deleted from iPhoto 11 go there. Assuming that's also empty then you have exactly two options:
    1. Restore from your back up
    or
    2. Use a file recovery app such as File Salvage - you can download a free trial and it will scan the disk for you and tell you with might be recoverable. Actual recovery will require that you purchase the app. There may be many files with the same or similar names. Always recover the largest file size.
    There are other such apps. Search on Macupdate or the App Store

    Recently, there has been a bug on my Mac OS X Lion, while trashing an iphoto the errant pic does not go to trash bin, but simply disappears! Which makes it impossible to change my mind. The trash remains empty, yet the pic is gone, and I never even emptied the trash (because it never made it to the trash)! How to recover the album I just accidently made disappear in this way?

    Sorry - there have been no updates to that system for a long time
    Try to backup your iPhoto library and lanch iPhoto while holding the option and cannoned keys down - repair permissions and if needed rebuild the database

  • How do I fix the trash -8003 error

    I can't empty my trash. Any ideas?

    The reason why some of the files are blocking the trash from emptying is because of specific ".app" files from third party companies like Adobe products. Not the user files or the various help documents but instead the actual mother program. Here's how to fix this problem:
    1) remove from the trash all the actual software programs like Photoshop, InDesign, DreamWeaver and so on and put them on the desktop.
    2) Command "I" (info) and when the dialog box opens go to the "Name & Extension" text box and remove the ".app" from the software name. Example: Photoshop.app change to Photoshop.
    3) the program icon will change to a "folder icon".
    4) put the folder icon back into the trash and you should be able to now empty the trash.
    If you continue to get the error code 8003 it's because you may still have one or more software programs in the trash that needs to go through this process. Remember - it's not the user files or help documents or supporting files that is causing this but instead the "actual product programs".

  • Can't get the trash to empty

    Hi everyone.
    Strange problem- my trash can won't empty. I have a lot of items in there, and they aren't in use. I tell the trash to empty, and it seems to comply. But when I check it again, there they are, those stubborn undeletable files!! What can I do? I've started up the computer and tried again, to no avail. I've even tried the code in the terminal- and it won't work because I don't have an admin password (it's my own mac and there is none).
    Any ideas?
    Thanks

    Create a new account, name it "test" and see how your Trash works in that User acct? (That will tell if your problem is systemwide or limited to your User acct.) This account is just for test, do nothing further with it.
    Open System Preferences >> Accounts >> "+" make it an admin account.
    If the problem is present in the test account also, then it is systemwide. In this case try repairing this with the 10.5.5 Combo Update This is a fuller install, as opposed to an incremental "delta" update so it should overwrite any files that are damaged or missing. It does not matter if you have applied it before.
    Remember to Verify Disk before update and repair permissions after update from /Applications/Utilities/Disk Utility.
    If the problem does not appear in the test account try starting in "Safe Mode" (It will take a bit more time to startup because it runs a directory check first).
    If that works go to System Preferences >> Accounts >> Login Items and remove them. Boot normally and test. If there are still problems, go to ~(yourHome)/Library/Contextual Menu Items and move whatever is there to the desktop. Then do the same with /Library/Contextual Menu Items. Lastly, try moving /Users/Home)/Library/Fonts to your desktop and restarting.
    Log out/in or restart, if that sorts it start putting items back one at a time until you find the culprit.
    Let us know.

  • How do I delete the trash on a secondary drive?

    From the X Lab FAQ I understand that .trashes folders are created also on secondary drives.
    I have set up a daily SuperDuper SmartCopy operation which clones my Home folder to a second drive (let's call it "Backup") in my Mac Pro.
    Today, both Home and Backup because almost full. I emptied the trash on Home which freed up many GBs. However, running a new Smart Copy with SuperDuper didn't similarly free up space on Backup by removing the trash which must have been cloned over.
    How can I remove the trash from Backup?
    Cheers
    P

    I thought so too.
    The two drives are identical and have since they were first set up been in this cloning relationship. The Home folder has 56GB available space after I emptied trash. Backup has 200kB (yes really) available and was unaffected by emptying trash.
    I can't explain the space difference. Any ideas?

  • How do you open the trash can in iMovie 4.0?

    2-17-07
    How do you open the trash can in iMovie 4 to retrieve files?
    thanks,
    gil

    Gil:
    Read this from imovie Guru, Karl Petersen:
    "All may not be lost. A couple of things to keep in mind:
    A. Don't forget that iMovie uses non-destructive editing, so the source file of a clip is never shortened. (The source file for each clip is stored in the Media folder of the project. Each scene imported from the camera arrives with its own Media file. Source files can support one clip or many.)
    If you split Clip A into two clips, then discard one of the clips and empty the trash, the original Media file is NOT discarded. The Media file itself is discarded ONLY if you discard the last clip that uses that source file. (In the past, iMovie would remove a portion of the Media file, shortening the file. iMovie HD NEVER shortens a Media file.)
    So the lost video may still be there, just not be represented by a clip. To retrieve the video of a split clip, select the clip and choose Advanced > Restore Clip to Original. That returns it to its original length. (Or better still, Option-drag the clip to some other place on the timeline to make a copy of it, then Restore the copy.)
    Emptying the trash does two things: 1) discards the CLIPS we've trashed -- clips perhaps created by splitting Clip A, and 2) sometimes it discards the source files for those clips. But #2 occurs only when no other project clip references that Media file. So long as any clip in the project relies on a Media file the file is not discarded. That means any clip that uses that source file can be restored to the file's original length and content.
    So the stuff you lost may be gone. Or not.
    B. A backup copy of the project file exists inside the project package. It is a copy of the project file as it was BEFORE you last saved. If you've saved the project just once, it may help.
    I suggest making a copy of the project and working on the copy. To make a copy, select the project in the Finder and choose Edit > Copy "your file name goes here".
    To look inside the package, Control-click on the project icon and choose "Show Package Contents" from the popUp menu. You'll see several project files inside the package, one with a tilde (~) in its name. That's the backup. Double-click on it to open the project. The discarded clips may appear, or they may be gone. (This will NOT recover any Media files that have been discarded.)
    If the backup project looks usable, quit iMovie without saving, move the current project file outside the package, change the name of the backup project file to match the current project file, open the project and save.

    That is very much dependent on your Email account.

    Choose Archive Mailbox.
    It may not be there if its not supported by your email provider.

  • How can I make the popup with empty fileds and create new record?

    I would like to use a popup to create new record.
    I created a af:popup by drag and drop a VO from data control to jsff. then, I created a button and place a af:showPopupBehavior. I was able to popup window by click the button.
    however, the window filled with the information from the 1st record. and when I select a record in table and click popup, the popup is filled with that record.
    How can I make the popup with empty fileds and create new record by saving the popup?
    Thanks

    You can have edit and new buttons, in the PopupFetchEvent identify button source (using popupFetchEvent.getLaunchSourceClientId()) if new button clicked clear the binding using below code.
    If you want to see empty fields, in the popup PopupFetchEvent clear the input component bindings.
    resetBindingValue("#{bindings.<componentid>.inputValue}", null);
        public static void resetBindingValue(String expression, Object newValue) {
            FacesContext ctx = FacesContext.getCurrentInstance();
            Application app = ctx.getApplication();
            ExpressionFactory elFactory = app.getExpressionFactory();
            ELContext elContext = ctx.getELContext();
            ValueExpression valueExp = elFactory.createValueExpression(elContext,expression,Object.class);
            Class bindClass = valueExp.getType(elContext);
            valueExp.setValue(elContext,newValue);
        }

    Is there a way to recover a .pages document that was thrown in the trash and then the trash was emptied Saturday, May 3, 2014?

    Shut the Mac down immediately (may already be too late) and buy some data recovery software, you may have a chance of recovering it.
    I assume that you're asking because you don't back up?

    You can't with the default Mail app.  Try using the Gmail app... much easier to use and the Trash is easily accessible, even with lots of labels.
