How do I get a plain list w/o thumbnails?

I am a photographer and I'm spending hours, literally, waiting for the little thumbnails to build when I go to open a file. How do I get rid of them?
I use several extrnal hard drives to store and organize my images. That doesn't seem to be the problem though. I have to

In Finder - View - Show view options... there's a 'show icon preview' that can be deselected in list, icon, column and coverflow views.
The 'use as defaults' button should make that selection stick for new folders too.
If you don't mean in Finder - please explain further, since it seems that your post was cut-off.
If you don't need to search the externals - adding them to Spotlight preferences - privacy saves indexing for no reason.

Please try the following…
First check that all your settings are correct, that contact syncing is checked on all devices (system preferences > iCloud on a mac and settings > iCloud on a iPhone, iPad or iPod).
Make sure the contacts you are adding are added to your 'iCloud' group and not an 'On My Mac', 'On My Phone' or other non iCloud group (you can do this by checking in groups), non iCloud contacts will not sync.
If you are sure that everything is set up correctly and your contacts are in the iCloud group, you might try unchecking contact syncing in the iCloud settings, restarting your device and then re-enabling contact syncing.

   My new iPhone 4 is on the way from Verizon, and I too am moving on from the LG Versa (a poor man's iPhone) so I've researched this. I trust you have been using the backup assistant on the LG phone to backup your contacts? If so, and you investigate the app store you will see an app for doing the same task on you new iPhone. Initially it will take you LG contacts you have backed up at Verizon to their new home on the iPhone.
According to user comments there appear to be a couple of issues with the app you need to be aware of:
   1. It will not automatically backup your iPhone, you will need to initiate updates in the future on your own. and
   2. You will see in the comments, that there have been some issues with length of backup when you add lots of contact photos to your list.
   This coupled with the address book sync from your computer should make your list whole, in fact the move to the iPhone will allow me to consolidate my address book with my cell phone contacts. Then once I remove the duplicates all will be right with the world.

If you have a system with Microsoft Office Document Imaging loaded, you can Print the PDF to this application. Then once the document opens, Print it to Adobe PDF. This will avoid the distilling errors.
It is part of Office XP, 2003 & 2007 I believe.
Otherwise you may be left with Print & Scan.
