How do I get a portable HD to mount on my MacBook Pro G4?

I recently bought an Iomega eGo USB portable HD, so I could back up my data. The drive is not defective–it works fine on a desktop PC. I plugged it into my USB ports (I had to use both ports, with one extension cable–my ports are on opposite ends of my keyboard) to get enough power. I can hear the drive spinning, but the icon does not show up on the screen. The online manual says to reformat the HD, but I can't do that if the computer can't see it.
Is the solution to buy an auxiliary power source that uses AC power in addition to the USB ports? I can't get the answer at Iomega, because the portable HD was bought on eBay, and Iomega does not cover items bought on an auction site. They don't recognize them as authorized resellers. I found this out just yesterday, as this is not mentioned in any of their literature.

Okay i looked them up and YES they are compatible with macs. if it's formatted for windows then no it will not show up on the mac, you need to repartition it on windows or try and see if you can pick it up in Disk Utility on osX. Unfortunately, there is no answer to this problem via this link. It may be that this is simply how the software actually works. It is a design fault in Adobe Photoshop Elements. It is possible to temporarily hide the dock within 'system preferences'. Oh well. Someone may know better.... I hope!

You have the display set in Extended Desktop mode with the MacBook as the main screen. The Menu Bar and Dock will be on the MacBook display and your background screen on the TV but you can move the cursor onto the TV screen.
In System Preferences>Display on the MacBook screen there should be an Arrangement tab when you have the MacBook hooked up to the TV and both screens working. When you click the Arrangement tab do you see two monitors side by side? One of them will have a Menu Bar at the top. Just click on the Menu Bar and drag it to the second monitor. That will make the second monitor your main screen.
The TV will now have the Dock and Menu Bar and windows will open on it. But you can move the cursor to the MacBook screen and move windows from the TV over to the MacBook screen.
You can now use your MacBook in Clamshell Mode with a wired or Bluetooth keyboard and mouse. http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3131 When you disconnect from the TV your Menu Bar will automatically change back to the MacBook.
Or if you want to work on the MacBook screen while showing it on a TV you can check the Mirror Display box on the lower left hand side of the Arrangement tab under the two monitors box. That will give you the same screen at the same resolution on both the MacBook and the external monitor.

I've actually looked around the site and see others have had the same problem with their mac, unfortunately I don't have the technical expertise or the time to get stuck into the long winded and confusing steps required to sort this problem. There is no option for me to email an Apple worker and I didn't particularly want to post this here, but it seems it's either this or wait two days to have Apple call me... Not what I want at all.
I have a Macbook Pro 13" late 2011, running OSX 10.7.2, which is two months old and in perfect condition. I upgraded from a Toshiba Satellite which cost me under £300 in 2008 and was excellent when it came to playing CDs... Funnily enough.
After paying £999 on an admittedly fantastic laptop I am rather appalled that such an expensive piece of kit would be incapable of playing audio CDs when iTunes seems to be one of the largest selling points of the Macintosh. I am wondering if this fault is intentional as it may force iTunes users to resort to the iTunes store rather than importing CDs?
I'm not expecting a solution to be posted on this thread, at least not one which I am capable of utilising, this is merely an attempt at venting my frustration over the issue seeing as I can't find an option to email Apple directly.
However if anyone reads this and knows of a solution that doesn't involve buying any extra kit (£999 seems to be enough for something to play CDs) or require in depth know-how then that would be greatly appreciated.

Hi, and thanks for getting back to me.
My settings are to open iTunes when an audio CD is inserted and in iTunes my settings are to import it.
With all due respect I'm unwilling to entertain the idea that my drive is faulty, it's only been used a couple of times (plays DVDs perfectly, and I've doubled checked that tonight after the computer failed to recognise audio CDs) and the laptop itself so far has been thoroughly well looked after.
I've looked around the net and there seem to be plenty of people with the same problem as me, it seems unlikely that their machines were all shipped with faulty drives.
From what I understand it seems to be that audio CDs that have the Compact Disc Digital Audio logo printed on the box have no problem playing on a Mac but CDs without that logo will not show up in iTunes or Finder. But going through my collection of CDs none of them seem to have the logo printed on them so perhaps that's an old standard? In which case this issue is a major shortfall of the Macintosh. However my opinion is far from expert and in any case I'm just speculating. The whole issue is confusing and frustrating and I do thank you very much for taking the time to post your help.

That is a problem with your amount of photos. iTunes Photo Sync is one-way, from the computer to the mobile devices, but not back.
Don't try to sync again, until your photos are off your phone. And don't enable iCloud Photo Library (beta). Both will erase the synced photos.
The options are limited. You can mail the photos, share them to shared photo streams, share them to a Dropbox or similar.

I would hope that you found in all these years how to install and get new moddified gpu drivers.
XP is limited and is 32-bit where each app gets 2GB address space also.
Windows 7 64-bit (or 8 even free for now to test out) otherwise wait to buy a new Mac.
