How do I get a pound sign on my key board?

Hello I bought a mac book pro retina 2012 release date 12months old 2nd hand on ebay
I cannot get a pound sign from the key board
All the help on message boards says Alt/Option plus 3 should work. Not for me it doesn't.
I can't change it in system preferences.
Please help

Go to System Preferences>Languages & Regions>Keyboard (if you're running Mavericks anyway) and see which keyboard layout you're using:
I'm set for US - and that's where option + 3 produces the £ symbol.

If you have a british keyboard then they might have changed it to a US keyboard in System Preferences > Language & Text > Input sources tab > check "british" and uncheck US

How do I get a pound sign?

Quite a basic question, but we are British ex-pats living in Oz and we bought our MBP here, so it doesn't have a pound sign on the keyboard. I've tried looking for a keyboard shortcut but I can't find one. Any ideas on how I get the pound (and Euro) signs?
MacBook Pro, Mac Mini Mac OS X (10.4.6)

Open the International preference pane and select the Input Menu tab. Check the Keyboard Viewer box in the scrolling window and the Show input menu in menu bar box. ( You can also check other boxes that may be useful for you.)
This creates a menu with the icon of the keyboard set you are using and lets you switch quickly. The Keyboard viewer works like KeyCaps did in the classic systems, where you can hold down any modifier keys and see what different keystrokes will give you. The Character Palette (activated from the same preference pane) also gives you access to those funny characters that can't be accessed from the keyboard. Some applications have links to these palettes and viewers built-in to menus for quick access, like Special Characters from the Edit menu in Safari.

You hold down the Option key and type a 3 on a US standard keyboard.
Or you open System Preferences / Keyboard, tick the Show Keyboard & Character viewers option. That will pop up a menulet in the menu bar from which you can choose the Keyboard Viewer item. In turn, that pops up a mini-floater on the screen, mimicking your keyboard and showing what characters are produced as you press any of the keys.

Apple provides repeat downloads as a convenience, not a substitute for your computers being the primary source of file transfers. All your iTunes information such as playlists, ratings, etc. are in a file on your computer, not in the Apple Store. Typically when you move computers you copy the whole iTunes folder and everything it contains to the new computer. Moving media files can be done with a drive, or by Home Sharing. You can also redownload media but let's say somebody desiced Apple may no longer sell a certain album; it cannot be downloaded again but if you already have it on a computer you can move your copy of the file.

You'll have to connect it to wifi so you can sign in with your password to authenticate the account. If the pop-up is blocking you, try resetting the iPad (hold the power and home buttons at the same time until you see the Apple logo, then release). As soon as you can after it restarts, go to Settings>Wifi and connect to your home network before the pop-up comes back.
