How do I get ads and pop ups off my computer?
Your question is one that tends to bring out the worst of all the bad advice that infests this site. There is, in fact, no need to download anything to solve the problem.
You may have installed one or more of the common types of ad-injection malware. Follow the instructions on this Apple Support page to remove it. It's been reported that some variants of the "VSearch" malware block access to the page. If that happens, start in safe mode by holding down the shift key at the startup chime, then try again.
Back up all data before making any changes.
One of the steps in the article is to remove malicious Safari extensions. Do the equivalent in the Chrome and Firefox browsers, if you use either of those. If Safari crashes on launch, skip that step and come back to it after you've done everything else.
If you don't find any of the files or extensions listed, or if removing them doesn't stop the ad injection, ask for further instructions.
Make sure you don't repeat the mistake that led you to install the malware. It may have come from an Internet cesspit such as "Softonic" or "CNET Download." Never visit either of those sites again. You might also have downloaded it from an ad in a page on some other site. The ad would probably have included a large green button labeled "Download" or "Download Now" in white letters. The button is designed to confuse people who intend to download something else on the same page. If you ever download a file that isn't obviously what you expected, delete it immediately.
Malware is also found on websites that traffic in pirated content such as video. If you, or anyone else who uses the computer, visit such sites and follow prompts to install software, you can expect more of the same, and worse, to follow. Never install any software that you downloaded from a bittorrent, or that was downloaded by someone else from an unknown source.
In the Security & Privacy pane of System Preferences, select the General tab. The radio button marked Anywhere should not be selected. If it is, click the lock icon to unlock the settings, then select one of the other buttons. After that, don't ignore a warning that you are about to run or install an application from an unknown developer.
Still in System Preferences, open the App Store or Software Update pane and check the box marked
Install system data files and security updates (OS X 10.10 or later)
or
Download updates automatically (OS X 10.9 or earlier)
if it's not already checked.

How to stop endless ads and pop-ups
I can't use Safari without constantly being rerouted to an ad or being interrupted by a pop-up. I didn't use to be like this. How do I stop it?
Alternatively check this: Remove unwanted adware that displays pop-up ads and graphics on your Mac - Apple Support
And, since you're a teacher, educate yourself by reading this: How to install adware -
Have the newer version of the WSA give us the option not to display an message when an ad or pop up is blocked?
I have asked about this before and I thought that is was in the blueprints for a future release I just wanted to see if is has been done.
I get a lot of complaints that websites are being blocked and really its just ads and pop ups.Other url filters that I have used in the past for ads and pop ups dont display this ad or pop up has been blocked message.
ThanksJust FYI ... we currently acheive this by using a custom (redirected from ironport) block page for all of our block messages. We then design this .asp block page to display differently depending on what fields are passed to it in the URL. If the category=Advertisements, then the block page appears as a simple white page with the text "This advertisement has been intentionally blocked ... "
This also allows us to design custom 504, 503 pages etc, as well as different block pages depending on the user's IP address range.
Can you share with us how you did this, I am new to the IronPort and have some .asp experience. I would like to know how to blank out the ad pages and have a message come up for the other blocked pages. Thanks! -
Can ads and pop ups be shut off on I pad on downloaded games?
Can ads and pop ups be shut off on game apps?
Chris is saying it but without saying it ....
Yes you can turn them off. Buy the full version of the game. As long as you use the free versions there is no way to turn off the ads. That's how the developer generates revenue for his or work - if you don't want to buy the paid version of the game he has to get paid somehow. -
My college wifi opens a pop-up in the login process, which my ipad is not allowing. how can i get to allow pop-ups in login process?
You may have pop-ups blocked.
Go to Settings>Safari and turn "Block pop-ups" off. You may needs to restart the ipad after turning off this settings if it doesnt work immediately -
Why am I constantly being re-linked to ads and pop ups
I have only had my Macbook Pro a week, and I cannot go onto safari without constantly being re-directed to advertising pages and pop ups appearing on sites that would never have them. I have compared all my settings to my girlfriends Macbook Pro with no differences that we can see. Even when I checked the T's and C's box to agree to the apple support community it opened up 2 other tabs to advertisement websites. Can anyone help me out as I am new to mac and its really annoying me after only having it for one week. I have downloaded adobe flash player and Utorrent but did not download any torrents as of yet. I have tried ClamXav and the scans come back with no results.
Any help will be gratefully appreciated. You may have installed the "DownLite" trojan, perhaps under a different name. Remove it as follows.
Malware is constantly changing to get around the defenses against it. The instructions in this comment are valid as of now, as far as I know. They won't necessarily be valid in the future. Anyone finding this comment a few days or more after it was posted should look for more recent discussions or start a new one.
Back up all data.
Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
/Library/LaunchAgents/com.vsearch.agent.plist
Right-click or control-click the line and select
Services ▹ Reveal in Finder (or just Reveal)
from the contextual menu.* A folder should open with an item named "VSearch" selected. Drag the selected item to the Trash. You may be prompted for your administrator login password.
Repeat with each of these lines:
/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.vsearch.daemon.plist
/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.vsearch.helper.plist
/Library/LaunchDaemons/Jack.plist
Restart the computer and empty the Trash. Then delete the following items in the same way:
/Library/Application Support/VSearch
/Library/PrivilegedHelperTools/Jack
/System/Library/Frameworks/VSearch.framework
~/Library/Internet Plug-Ins/ConduitNPAPIPlugin.plugin
Some of these items may be absent, in which case you'll get a message that the file can't be found. Skip that item and go on to the next one.
From the Safari menu bar, select
Safari ▹ Preferences... ▹ Extensions
Uninstall any extensions you don't know you need, including any that have the word "Spigot" or "Conduit" in the description. If in doubt, uninstall all extensions. Do the equivalent for the Firefox and Chrome browsers, if you use either of those.
This trojan is distributed on illegal websites that traffic in pirated movies. If you, or anyone else who uses the computer, visit such sites and follow prompts to install software, you can expect much worse to happen in the future.
You may be wondering why you didn't get a warning from Gatekeeper about installing software from an unknown developer, as you should have. The reason is that the DownLite developer has a codesigning certificate issued by Apple, which causes Gatekeeper to give the installer a pass. Apple could revoke the certificate, but as of this writing, has not done so, even though it's aware of the problem. This failure of oversight is inexcusable and has compromised both Gatekeeper and the Developer ID program. You can't rely on Gatekeeper alone to protect you from harmful software.
*If you don't see the contextual menu item, copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. In the Finder, select
Go ▹ Go to Folder...
from the menu bar and paste into the box that opens by pressing command-V. You won't see what you pasted because a line break is included. Press return. -

Welcome to Apple Support Communities
You have to install Office for Mac > http://www.microsoft.com/mac It's the same as Office for Windows, but ported to OS X. It has got a different interface, so give time to learn it. It reads the existing Office documents you have, and the files you can create can be used in any PC with Office.
There are also alternatives:
- Apple iWork. It's Apple's Office version, with Pages, Numbers and Keynote. Available at the Mac App Store.
- LibreOffice. Free and open-source, works with Office documents.
I recommend you to give LibreOffice a try. It gives you everything you need and it's free -
When I try to send back a gift in a Facebook game, there should be a pop-up that appears to allow me to do this. However in the newest version of Firefox, I can not get these pop-ups to appear and I have to have version 6 to be able to work from home. So how do I fix this?
This might be because your settings are configured to block pop-ups. To fix this:
1. Go to: Firefox > Options > Content
2. Untick the 'Block popup windows' option
3. Click 'OK'

How do I get rid of pop ups on my macbook
I keep getting pop ups which just started recently, I may have downloaded some sort of media player which obviously was not. How can I get rid of these same pop ups?
Click here and follow the instructions, or if there’s a type of adware not covered by them on the computer, these ones. If you're willing to use a tool to remove it(you don't need to, but may find it easier), you can instead run Adware Medic; this link is a direct download.

Bought new computer- how do i get all my itunes song off old computer and onto new one?
i recently purchased a new computer and installed ITUNES on it. Once I put in my APPLE ID all my purchased songs showed up (songs i purchased through ITUNES on my old computer). Here is the problem, my old computer has around 800 songs on it from cd's that I owned and downloaded those songs into ITUNES. Now i want those songs on my new ITUNES on my new computer but don't know how to get them there. I have tried the following so far:
- Tried syncing my ipod and ipad to the new computer but each time I do this the new computer ITUNES wants to wipe out the 800 songs and just put on the transfered purchases songs.
- Tried 'home sharing'. When I did home sharing with both computers on and ITUNES opened all the songs showed up on my new computer but as soon as I closed out ITUNES on the old computer the 800 songs went away on the new computer and it went right back to the songs I purchased.
Please someone tell me there is an easy way to take all these songs I have on ITUNES on the old computer and transfer them to my new computer and ITUNES without having to bust out all these old cd's and sit there and re-burn them all on the new computer.
I have in addition to this all ready authorized my new computer with ITUNES so that is good to go. Any help would be appreciated...Are they not on your new computer after you restored your iTunes backup?
Didn't have a backup?
Unlike music you can download apps multiple times. Go to each app, download it (ignore the price) and after you click it will tell you that you've already purchased the app and ask if you want to download it again. -

Every time I click on something in safari a new tab opens with an advert, there are also little adverts popping up on the safari page.
There is no need to download anything to solve this problem. You may have installed a variant of the "VSearch" ad-injection malware.
Triple-click the line below on this page to select it, then copy the text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C:
/Library/LaunchDaemons
In the Finder, select
Go ▹ Go to Folder...
from the menu bar and paste into the box that opens by pressing command-V. You won't see what you pasted because a line break is included. Press return.
A folder named "LaunchDaemons" may open. Look inside it for a file with a name of the form
com.something.daemon.plist
Here something is a variable word, which can be different in each case. It could be "cloud," "dot," "highway," "submarine," "trusteddownloads," or pretty much anything else.
There may also be a file named
com.something.helper.plist
in the same folder.
If you find files with names that fit the above description, post what you have for "something." -
Can you get viruses through pop ups off of topix?
My local news website had a story and it led to topix for the rest of the story. When I got there a huge pop up came up and said "You just won claim your prize! Enter your email" The only way to exit was by clicking okay, i tried to force quit but when i started safari back up it just said the same thing again. So i had to click okay, it led to a website that said "Enter your email, you won something Youtube viewer, etc..." I exited immediately and cleared my history. I use a 2012 Macbook Air with Lion. Is there a possibilty of me getting a virus?
No. There are no viruses that affect Macs.
