How do I get around no firewire?

I have realised with some huge dismay that i can't import video from a handycam into my recently purchased macbook, due to no firewire port. I have an old desktop mac that does have a firewire port, but is too old to deal with large amounts of video data.
Is it possible for me to import my video data via that desktop computer (using imovie 08) but select an external hard drive as the data destination?
And, if this is possible, what are my chances of then transfering that data to my macbook via my external hard drive?
Will usb connection make this too impossible... or can I compress/decompress the files in some way without losing the integrity of the data?
essentially I want to use the imovie 08 on my macbook rather than on my very old desktop mac.

all the extracted files should be placed in the same directory. by default they fail to extract in the same directory so you will need to manually move them.

To install the utility, doubleclick the msicuu2.exe file you downloaded.
Now run the utility ("Start > All Programs > Windows Install Clean Up"). In the list of programs that appears in CleanUp, select any iTunes entries and click "Remove", as per the following screenshot:
Quit out of CleanUp, restart the PC and try another iTunes install. Does it go through properly this time?

iTunes Match is not sharable across Apple IDs. The best way to get the music on her iPad is to leave hers signed into her Apple ID on the iTunes Store and sync via USB.

You didn't mention which version of OS X your running but there are password reset utilities provided OS X: Changing or resetting an account password (Snow Leopard and earlier) - Apple Support or OS X: Changing or resetting an account password - Apple Support
Alternately you can use an external keyboard to log in and change the password. Make a backup if you don't have one, it's likely that your problems aren't over. If that water continues to migrate downward and fries the logic board your macbook will be toast.

I also got the second problem. The storyboard on iMovie trailer has all these missing videos. If I import them on my iPad it doesn't find them.
If you find a solution it would be much appreciated to share it here ... I'll do the same.

HT2518 How do you reset the password on a migrated user account? Mac wants the old password putting in before we can set a new password and the old password won't work. How do we get around this?

Used Migraton Assist to transfer data from old Dell PC onto new Macbook Pro. Data has come across but cannota access the User Account from the Dell. It is displayed on the desktop of the Mac but is requesting and new password. Before we can reset the password we have to put in the old password. We have put in the old password but it doesn't work and therefore we can't reset the password and get into the User Account.
How do we get around this problem so that we can access the User Account.
Although the data has transferred we cannot see our contacts transferred from Outlook into Mail. We are wondering if they are contained within our User Account, but can't find out until we can access the it?

If you are in the UK, and the film studio allows re-downloading, and you are signed in with the same account that you bought them with, then they might show under the Purchased link under Quinklinks on the right-hand side of the iTunes store home page for re-downloading - if they don't show then check to see if they are hidden (hiding and unhiding).
But you should be keeping and maintaining your own backup of your downloads and noy rely on being able to re-download any item as they are occasionally removed from the store by the content provider (film studio, tv company, record company etc).
