How do I get available on iChat?
I am listed as offline in iChat and it will not let me click on available. Every time I try it simply goes back to offline. How do I fix this?

iChat 6.x defaults to showing several Buddy list as one Buddy List
It can be that one of those gets set to something and another will not apparently change due to the way the combined list is displaying.
It pays to go to the iChat Menu > Preference >General section and Unlink the Buddy lists and set the Status separately.

how do i get latest updates in ichat
Hi,
It depends on what you mean.
iChat is updated now and then when the OS is Updated.
That is to say that when iChat is Updated it is included in one of the OS Updates.
For instance in Snow Leopard iChat 5 was updated in OS 10.6.3 to iChat 5.0.1
At a later OS updates it finally got to iChat 5.0.3
So far iChat 6 has been updated once to version 6.0.1 at the OS 10.7.2 update.
However I am thinking you may mean Add-ons.
If this is the case we will need to know which version you have (there are none for iChat 6 that I know about)

How do you get to the ichat menu? I am a brand new mac user
So I accidently put the wrong user name when I was setting up ichat and I want to go back and change it with an AIM account, but I can't seem to figure out how to get into the menu of iChat. Just got the computer last night

This first (From Defcom)
Click on iChat in the dock at the bottom of your desktop first.
This will either bring iChat to the Front or launch iChat is it is not open.
Then you should be able to do irvine91's stuff
Open iChat > In the Menu bar along the top of the screen click on iChat and then Preferences > Select the accounts tab and then you can use the plus and minus icons to add and remove new accounts.
Removing the incorrect one and adding a new Account with the correct info is probably easier than trying to edit the existing one that is set up at the moment.
IF the Existing one has Buddies added set up the new one then Select all the Buddies in the Current Buddy List and drag them to the new Buddy list.
Then you can delete the first one you set up (that is incorrect).
Presumably if you put in incorrect details it is not even able to Log-in and have not been able to add Buddies.

How can I get a new iChat account?
I cannot use my current iChat because I did not listen to the instructions and I was wondering if I can restart iChat and start over from the beginning.

You can register for an AIM Name here
Certain Apple IDs the end either @mac.com or @me.com also works as AIM Screen Names
@mac.com names can be registered here.
All Apple IDs need you to link the new @mac.com name to an existing email address.
This Email cannot be one you have already linked to an Apple ID.
With iOS 5 and iCloud you can create an @me.com name based on your existing Apple ID
However this only works in iChat 6 (Lion)
To work as AIM Screen Name the Apple IDs have to have passwords of 16 characters or Less (This is an AIM server Limit)
Process.
Create new Name.
Go to the iChat menu > Preferences > Accounts.
Highlight any ID you want to remove and then press the Minus Button.
Press Add Button and then add Screen Name in the screen that appears.

Can you go to Applications/Utilities and open KeyChain Access ?
In here highlight the Login item in the top left box if there is one than one item.
In the lower left box highlight Applications
ON the righthand box find your AIM name and double clcik the Line to bring up the Info panel.
Tick the box to Show the password (you will be asked in a dialogue box for your Login Password for the Mac and then use the Allow Once button).
The Panel should now show you the password.
Is it recording the correct Password ?
In the Access tab does it say iChat is allowed to access this Password ?

Trouble Shooting
This Post deals with Updating iChat 2 in Panther to iChat 3 in Tiger
NOTE:- What is said here was found out at the time Tiger was released and the info may not be transferable to any other OS Upgrade such as Tiger to Leopard
Ok We will start with loading Tiger and iChat version 3.0
From Panther
There are or were several Add-ons and applications available to Panther users of iChat that are not compatible with iChat 3.
These following need to be deleted. I am not supplying links here as you don't need them.
iCAR - An Add-on that posts an Auto response Away message (produces a 1 fps result in a Video chat)
Virex for Panther - An Anti Virus app avialable to @mac account users (Produces the 1 fsp problem)
iChatUSBCam for Panther/iChat2.x - A Add-on utility for using iSight or USB cam with iChat2.x (Incompatible with Tiger/iChat 3)
iProfile - An Add-on for producing a profile on the AIM server that ichat 2.x could not do (not proven to be a problem but now not needed).
A clean install of Tiger (not Archive and Install) produces the best results.
But any install should also check these Tiger settings.
First, UPDATE to 10.4.3 as this gets past many Connection issues that became apparent with the basic Tiger (10.4) and iChat 3.0 It updates iChat to version 3.1 (it also mentions the Virex issue)
Check Settings
Don't be complacent that you have not set anything different.
There are several new things in Tiger that may trip you up.
These are worth looking at:
Mac Firewall. Now includes the ability to Block all UDP traffic in the Advanced button (System Preferences > Sharing >Firewall tab then the Advanced Button).
Also can now open UDP protocol for ports where as the Panther one only did TCP (Check any old Panther settings you Added to the presets).
The ports should be:
TCP -5190
UDP -5060, 5190, 5678, 16384-16403
There are more ports for Bonjour 5297, 5298, 5353 UDP and 5298 TCP and Jabber, 5220, 5222, 5223 on TCP)

That info coverts into a table like this
QuickTime. This has a change in the name of the Connection Speed tab to Streaming (System Preferences > QuickTime) Check this is set to be equal to your connection speed (the download one if this is faster - *Preferably 1.5Mbps* ). See Apple Doc 301641 Dated 9th November 2005.
Date & Time. Not conclusively involved but worth eliminating. Set a Network Server and the correct Time Zone.
Also check it matches any similar setting in your Modem and router
Apple Remote Desktop. If this is active in System Preferences > Sharing > Services tab it causes problems for iChat.
Next, test the actual speed you are getting from your ISP.

Lotus Notes Some people have reported problems with this.
Make sure any Add-on Video cards or input PCI cards have up to date Firmware
IF you are still having problems I would do Gulliver's Routine Maintenance Tasks as laid out here.
Lastly, some routers/modems are SIP aware and give different results in iChat 3 compared to iChat 2.
This is due to the Operating System changing (like a new computer connecting to the modem) rather than iChat.

How do I get messages to go back to an AIM account? It's only seeing the iPad's Facetime email address and not seeing the old AIM account name that is on my desktop. I am using my iMac using iChat to talk to a newer iMac that doesn't have iChat. We had this working using Messages and Facetime (on the new machine) talking to my existing iChat account. One day last week, when Facetime rang, my kids answered on the iPad. Dang! Now it's all fouled up! The new iMac won't see my AIM account name and shows that I'm offline, because the iPad is off. We were able to call using "most recent call" in Facetime, but now I can't go and control that new iMac remotely to help with some email concerns the user is having. I'm trying to not personalize this too much, but it's grandkids talking to Grandma and Mom and Dad trying to solve new machine hiccups. Normally, I could just go in via iChat and control the other machine and troubleshoot, but I can't do it with Facetime only. My buddy list doesn't see the other computer even though we are connected on Facetime right now. My name is not highlighted for the other computer. What could have gone so wrong?

Can't install the software for the Brother MFC-9440CN because it is not currently available from the Software Update server....how do I get the driver then..it ised to work in my old mac..but cant print to it in my new unit

They will only be where you put them If you are doing the very basics, then they will be on your computer and they will be in your backup copy of your computer.
The itunes store is not global at all, never has been. You cannot redownload your content from another country. You can only use the countrys itunes store for the country that you are physically located. -
I pre ordered a album and got songs then it came out so itunes sent me a confirmation and it said to go to available downloads and gave link so I did and it did nothing for me and when I went to the album I wanted it said it was purchased so how do I get my music and don't even see available downloads in the iTunes Store

my bluetooth says 'Not Available' how do i get it to work again. I have restarted the computer several times and have replaced the batteries in both the keyboard and mouse and yet it still is not working! please help
I have had the same problem. It was cured by turning computer off and/or restarting it. I am not sure if once was enough. I think shutting down must cut out whatever it is that blocks bluetooth. Good luck
