How do I get contacts to activate on my iPhone?

I have changed settings on both my iPhone and iMac to enable syncing of contacts. But when I enter a change on my iMac, it doesn't transfer to the iPhone. I made this change 12 hours ago. Still nothing on my iPhone.

I found an answer after searching high and wide...somehow I went to iCloud.com(which Inever heard of while adding iCloud to my devices!).
Found this info:
Quit and restart the Contacts app on your iOS device
Press the Home button.
Double-press the Home button to open the Multitasking menu.
Tap and hold the Contacts icon until it jiggles.
Tap the "X" to remove it from the list.
Press the Home button to get back to your Home screen. Wait a minute before reopening the Contacts app.
It worked. So, if those instructions are decipherable, you might get Contacts to sync. I hope so, since it worked for me!

Back the old phone up to iTunes and then restore from the iTunes backup on the new phone. Then go in, sign out of your Apple ID in Settings > iCloud > Delete Account and select "Keep on my iPhone". Then sign in with her Apple ID and select "Merge" when you turn on contacts.

First, always make sure that you are dealing with the same account on all devices. Then just turn contacts on in settings,iCloud.. You can always log into iCloud.com from a computer to see what is being synced there.

On your Mac, for duplicates, switching Contacts off then back on in System Preferences > iCloud may prevent duplicates.
On the iPhone / iPad tap Settings > iCloud. Make sure Contacts and Calendars are swtiched on.
Try restarting your Mac and your iOS devices when items won't sync as they should.
To restart an iOS device: Hold the On/Off Sleep/Wake button down until the red slider appears. Slide your finger across the slider to turn off iPhone. To turn iPhone back on, press and hold the On/Off Sleep/Wake button until the Apple logo appears.

when you got the new phone it set up a new backup.
if you go into...
preferences>devices
you will see a list of the device backups on your computer.
to have itunes restore all the old stuff that was on your old phone right click on the iphone on the itunes screen. select..
restore from backup
select the one from your old phone and presto
