Go to Settings>Mail>Gmail>>Advanced. Do you have an an item for Deleted Messages Remove? What options are available.?

I think I figured it out. I downloaded all the email in my wife's hotmail account(500) to the iphone and then deleted 350 of the emails on the iphone. then I set the iphone to look for the 200 most recent messages. When I did this the iphone updates all the new emails and the old ones that I deleted on the iphone are still in hotmail.

Did you already try to reset the phone by holding the sleep and home button for about 10sec, until the Apple logo comes back again? You will not lose data by resetting your device.
If this does not work, and you have no problems connecting to the Internet, delete the mail account and set it up again.

iCloud for email is not on my Mac. It should be under Internet and wireless in System Preferences but it is not. I too was a mobileme user and have just migrated to iCloud on mackbook pro w/OS 10.7.4. Transition caused my sent mailboxes to rearrange themselves so that I have no comprehensive 'sent' mailbox as I did previously and the view on both incoming and outgoing mailboxes keeps rearranging itself no matter how many times I set preferences. One result is that search function no longer works. Is anyone else having problems like this? All was fine for a week after transition but after having an evening when my password was repeatedly rejected I had to log in and out of iCloud (as directed by tech support) and w/in an hour or so the mailbox problem began.

I called and got signed up for international data and can't actually get connected and get my email and data. Phone is working ok and I have been in the "settings, cellular data, and have everything enabled.....but it still doesn't work. I have also tried to connect to different carriers and reboot....no luck. Any suggestions would be great as I need to get connected for work email.

Mark48long you will need to update your roaming status by dialing *228 from your device anytime you are out of the service area.. also go into your settings and make sure it is set to accept roam.. let us know if this clears up the issues with the roaming..

Did you accidentally select to receive email notifications for the entire group? I did once and had the same thing happen. You can disable the email account (temporarily) that is getting the emails. Then log into the support forums. Go to the forum of interest and turn off email notifications.
Once that is done, the emails will stop and you will have to clean out your inbox (will take a bit of time as it is a manual process).

How do I get emails from my archived PREVIOUS SYSTEM

I recently had to reinstall Mac OS X. I chose to archive my previous system. This was a GREAT feature because i was able to find all my previously installed apps/songs/movies and just drag them into the new system:)
However, is there a way to get all my old emails from "MAIL" on my previous system? I had some mailboxes setup in Mail on my previous system, and had some emaild in my mailboxes that I would like to import over into my new, current system.
How can this be done?

I take it you did an archive and install without preserving your user settings.
Otherwise all this stuff would have been automatically imported.
you can restore your mail to the state it was in prior to the reinstall as follows.
quit Mail. go to Previous systems folder and inside there should be a folder YYYY-MM-DD_HHMM corresponding to the install date. go there->users/Username. that's your archived home directory. in it find the folder Library/Mail and the file Library/Preferences/com.apple.mail.plist. copy them to the corresponding places in your current home directory. once you start Mail it should look just as it was prior to the reinstall.
