How do I get envelopes to print properly

I'm going out of my mind. I've been trying to do a mail-merge print of Monarch (4"x10.5") envelopes on a networked HP4000N Laserjet. I've done the mail merge using MS Word, and OpenOffice. I've tried to print to the HP directly and print to PDF (save as PDF) and print to the PDF printer. I've tried to print the PDF created using Adobe Acrobat 9 Pro.
The result is totally random. Either the envelope is taken through the printer and comes out blank, or it prints part of the address cutting off half, or prints the wrong orientation, or prints the same envelope again and again. On screen everything looks fine. The envelopes are the right size and orientation on screen is correct. What is totally unusual is that Acrobat can't print this correctly.
Since I am unable to print from four programs, I don't think this is a problem with the programs. But I can't figure out how to get these envelopes printed.
How are you supposed to print Monarch envelopes using OSX 10.5.8?
Any suggestions or ideas are appreciated!
(Please don't suggest reinstalling anything since these programs can print everything else OK. This is only with printing envelopes.)

Check the printer itself. Some printers you need to set the color & B&W settings on the printer itself instead of the Mac. If that is not the case w/your printer, contact HP tech support and/or post in their forums if they have one.

It's very difficult to tell what might be going on if you don't give very specific details.
For instance, in many reference databases, full-text articles are not free. You have to pay to view them, either article by article, or by subscription. Your school may have such a subscription, but, if it does, you probably need to access the database through the portal, web site, or facility provided by your school (your school's librarian should be able to help you with that). If you don't, the database has no way of knowing you have a right to view the full text, and may give you just a preview or the article's first page.
Another possibility is that the database provides full-text PDFs in a format not compatible with Quartz, which may be able to render only the first page. But, in such a case, I'd expect Safari to print blank pages. If that's the case, you need to save the PDF on your hard disk and open it with Adobe Reader (Preview wouldn't work).
There are other possibilities, but these two seem to me the most likely.

You should save the PDF on your hard disk from Safari. (I think you should do this anyway, just in case you need to refer to the article again later.) Instead of just clicking the "'full text in pdf' link", press and hold Control, then click. This should give you a contextual menu; if the link points to a PDF file, you should see the commans "Save Linked File to 'Downloads'" and "Save Linked File As…". Use either, save the file, then, in Finder, double-click on it. Preview should open it.
It is possible that the link is not to a PDF file, but to a script which fetches that PDF file for you. In that case, it's pointless to download it. Click on it, and then, if the PDF viewing window opens in Safari, move the cursor towards the centre of the bottom of the window. A bar with commands should appear; one of them will download the file to your Downloads folder.

There is no HP support for this old printer. I have tried to connect via ethernet (thru ethernet router), and it does not show up in printer preferences. The printer worked fine on system 9x but when I went to my new macs with system X no luck. This is a great B&W printer that prints at 18 x 24". I would like to keep it and not junk it, but its been sitting on my desk unused for some time now. Any thoughts or JUNK IT! Thanks, R.T.

I got it working by getting a USB cord that connects to it - but every once in a while it just stops working for weeks. The mac 'sees' it and it sends the data because the printer lights start blinking but then it just doesn't do anything. Is there no one who can tell me (and raterada) how to get some new life into these old printers. I would rather not add this (and a new toner cart) to the landfill just yet. . .

1: Go into iTunes.
2: Right click on the song and choose 'Get Info' (or press cmd+i on a Mac).
3: In 'Info' change the album name to the one you want it to go into, when you start typeing it should automatically come up.
4: Check that the disk number and track number is correct. It should be automatic.
4: Press OK.

Back up all data.
In the Finder, hold down the option key and select
Go ▹ Library
from the menu bar. From the Library folder, move the following item to the Trash, if it exists:
Caches/com.apple.dashboard.client
and move the following items to the Desktop:

Thanks. As I understand it, you want your Print dialog to retain the most recently used settings. That's reasonable and I believe that is the way it is supposed to work.
You may consider the following a fix or a workaround. In the Print dialog you have the option of configuring your settings and saving them as a preset, as in the following screenshot:
"Presets" are in the dropdown menu near the top.

If not, and you are comfortable with creating a new priner queue (which it appears you are, since you already did it trying to troubleshoot) then try this:
Go to System Preferences > Print & Fax, select your printer by right-clicking the printer (control-click does the same thing). Select "reset printing system" from the menu that appears. Confirm that you know this will eliminate all your printers.
This may or may not result in different actions than removing and reinstalling the printer as you did.
Then, add the printer in the usual manner and see if that fixes anything.
