How do I get Firefox to start up without trying to dialout? (Work offline setting is not saved on restart.)

My home page is a local file. I do not want my browser dialing out at start up. It is hard to tell if there is a trojan or virus when it tries to dial out before I try to load a page. I turn off most automatic updates on extensions that have a setting for that. I do not have a problem editing a configuration file if needed.

Thanks, the-edmeister, that autodial-helper setting should solve the connection dialog. (I set it to false but haven't restarted yet.)
But the underlying cause will still be there, and it will do its thing if I'm already online. I could not track all the destinations, 2 show up only in firewall, one of those was UDP, but the other was TCP/IP I think (the firewall doesn't log every connection). Two other connections show up in my proxy log. One of those is a GET/POST of 106 bytes to ocsp.godaddy.com. It uses what looks like a unique ID called Etag. And it does this on every start up of Firefox. I can block that particular server, but it just gives the impression of behaving like spyware, which kills any trust I may have had. (I can remember not so long ago when well-behaved applications would not even check for updates without asking first.)
On a happy note, I went through most of my installed extensions, and most are not misbehaving. I uninstalled a couple that were and found a way to reconfigure another to get the info from a local file.

  • When I clicked on Firefox IE opens instead. How do I get Firefox to load? I tried a system restore but it didn't work and I have scanned for spyware and viruses. I unistalled firefox and reinstalled and asked it to launch firefox when done and IE start

    When clicking to start Firefox IE starts instead. I have unistalled Firefox and reinstalled and thought I removed IE also but it still opens. I don't know of anything I would have changed or done that would have started the problem.

  • I was deleting some Wild Tangent games, computer went nuts, and now I can't get Firefox. I have to access the web through Internet Explorer (hate it). How do I get Firefox back. I've tried everything.

    I had FF 4.0 Beta 12. While deleting some Wild Tangent games, everything went black and I haven't been able to get to Firefox since, (about 7-8 weeks. I click on the desktop icon for FF and I do get the FF screen with the FF icon on top left and the minimize, maximize and exit icons on the top right. However, the screen is just white and I can't open anything up. This is driving me crazy because the only way I can get to the internet is through IE and I hate it. I do get a crash report from FF and I fill it out and send it in with my email but I hear nothing from FF because I don;t think you get the report. I want my FF back and I'm going very frustrated trying everything and nothing works. Please, please help me if you can. Thanks, Cathy

  • How do i get firefox to play all webm sounds? it worked before

    for instance there is a link i found in that webm audio wont work. "https://volafile.io/get/FI2GPql8VEVyiQ/Pigeon.webm" this issue seems on and off i have yet to find more videos but this has been going on with other online webm and possibly mp4... i don't recall right now. just webm comes first. most videos that contain audio will play in the embedded player with no problems. however some others will not play audio at all. it doesn't stop there. you know that new facebook voice message that came out? it doesn't work either. it wont play at all. it will however play on opera 12.17 but not firefox 36 or waterfox 36.0 or even chrome. it seems firefox and chrome are the only browsers who share this issue. firefox will also not play this "http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/orange" i mean the pronunciation of the word orange. i also tried some other online dictionaries with the pronunciation audio thing and they too will not play. for both this firefox and chrome. i do realize this is not chrome support but i am just trying to give as much detailed information so i can fix this. it has been quite annoying. the only other way to play the audio in the webm is to download it. i think this is a html5 issue? since facebook and those dictionaries use html5 for that audio? i don't know... it's just a guess.
    i've tried rebooting, checking the audio properties but it can't be the audio properties? or else the sound wouldn't play in opera. the sounds for that webm i linked and the dictionaries and facebook play fine for the same firefox version on my other computer. this windows is 7 and the other is vista. this started a few months back. around janurary. i uninstalled some programs to try that as a fix. this did not help and nor did these programs have to do with audio or browsers.
    i don't know what else to try. there has to be something that is making firefox and chrome not play these types of sounds. some sort of common factor that they both rely on but not opera. can someone please help me? thank you for anyone's time with this matter :)

    i just tried disabling adblock and checking if i had any no script or noscript sort of addon. i do not have a script killer. disabling adblock did not solve the issue.

  • How can I get Firefox to remember a password for a site I originally told it not to? The site is not found in the exceptions area of passwords either.

    I initially said for Firefox to NOT remember a password for COZI.com, my online calendar site. Now I would like it to, but cannot find a place to make that happen. I checked under TOOLS/OPTIONS/SECURITY/PASSWORDS. The site is not listed under exceptions either. Is there a way to make this happen?

    I do not see that form in the page source, so it looks that it the login form gets created via JavaScript and the Firefox Password Manager doesn't work in such cases. Form fill may store the name.

    == Some time back, beggining with Firefox updates, at least three, or more updates ago.

    Thanks for the tip. I took the following steps:
    1) Backed up the existing profile (presumably corrupted somewhere);
    2) Deleted the existing profile;
    3) Moved the existing Firefox to the Trash and downloaded a fresh copy;
    4) Started Firefox (thus allowing it to create its default profile)
    5) Copied the following files from the backup copy of the previous profile: places.sqlite, key3.db, signons.sqlite, permissions.sqlite, persdict.dat, cert8.db ---
    I'm posting this from a Firefox browser, so I guess I'm OK now.

  • I've down loaded adobe flash player but when I try to veiw video on firefox I'm still told that I need adobe flash player. How do I get firefox to see the flash player download?

    I was trying to view a video I uploaded to facebook using firefox. The system told me to down load adobe flash player. I did but still get the message that I need to down load flash player. How do I get firefox to see the down loaded adobe flash player?

    by installing from within Firefox, Internet Explorer has its own version (Active-X).
    Make sure you are starting in the correct place for Flash
    * http://www.adobe.com/software/flash/about/
    If you want to read PDF files in you browser, you might also want
    * http://get.adobe.com/reader/
    After the download,
    #bring up the download manager ("Ctrl+J") and start your installs. As soon as the install comes up,
    #close Firefox with '''File > Exit''' or "Firefox" button > Exit. Give Firefox some time to close.
    #If install does not proceed, '''terminate "firefox.exe"''' and '''"plugin-container.exe"''' from the "Processes" tab in the Windows Task Manager.
    #* Windows 7 shortcut to the WTM is "Ctrl+Shift+Esc"
    #* or on any Windows system from "Ctrl+Shift+Esc" then choose Windows Task Manager.
    #*Make sure that "firefox.exe" is no longer running -- if it is still running then terminate it by selecting the use "End Process" button or from context menu, and do the same for "plugin-container.exe" if it is found there.
    #proceed with the install.
    '''Warning''': this is the Adobe site and they have chosen to to provide crapware along with their own product. Only install the product you were planning to install. Do not install additional products: including -- "Free! McAfee Security Scan Plus" or "Google Chrome". Installing Google Chrome on your own and installing it because it is offered on the Adobe site are two different things.
    Find updates for your installed plugins at http://www.mozilla.com/plugincheck/ mozilla.com/plugincheck
    -- best to use Adobe's site to really see if their plug-ins are up to date.
    Please fix your caps lock or read what you type, do you think anybody could read my answer if I typed in all caps.
    If the above fails to correct the problem, I would try uninstalling Adobe Flash from your system entirely first, from the control panel then "Programs and Features".

  • How do I get Firefox to remember two usernames and passwords for att.yahoo?

    Firefox remembers one username and password, does not auto-fill-in the information (which is good), but will not ask to remember the second username and password. How do I get Firefox to remember the second username and password?
    I have two e-mail accounts which use the same login page, one account is sbcglobal and the other is yahoo. I would like Firefox to remember both sets of information so I don't have to type all the username and password information for one account.

    * Make sure that you not run Firefox in (permanent) [[Private Browsing]] mode
    * You are in Private Browsing mode if you see "Tools > Stop Private Browsing", possibly grayed
    * You enter Private Browsing mode if you select: Tools > Options > Privacy > History: Firefox will: "Never Remember History"
    * To see all History settings, choose: Tools > Options > Privacy, choose the setting <b>Firefox will: Use custom settings for history</b>
    * Uncheck: [ ] "Automatically start Firefox in a private browsing session"

    How can I set home page for a new tab? how can i get firefox to open the home page every time i open a new tab in Windows vista home basic??
    == This happened ==
    Every time Firefox opened

    Firefox can have multiple home pages if you wish. Each home page that will open when starting Firefox is separated by the "|" character.
    See: http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/How+to+set+the+home+page
    To have new tabs open a specific web site, add one of the following extensions:

    After restarting my computer firefox is deleted for Windows, when i try to open firefox a message pops up saying the program has been moved from its original location and is unable to run How do I get Firefox on my computer permanently?

    I have tried everything I could to fix this, but some things require actually being on Firefox, and since I cannot get on, I cannot click on the tabs to do it. I have even totally uninstalled firefox, and that has not fixed this. I still get the same message that firefox is running and I need to close it or restart (which I have also tried dozens of times). I have removed things like Java, and that has not helped either. If I cannot even get on line in firefox, how can I fix this. I am not crazy about using internet explorer, but right now, it is my only option. I even tried to start in safe mode, and the same message box pops up!

  • Why wont google toolbar work with fire fox 5????? also how can i get firefox 4 back so i can use the toolbar???

    Hello,my question is why wont google toolbar work with firefox 5?????
    Also how can i get firefox 4 back so i can use the toolbar???

    This page is an easier way to download Firefox 4.0: http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/products/download.html?product=firefox-4.0&os=win&lang=en-US , as this links starts the download process asap.
    I needed to upgrade to Firefox 4.0+ for an add-on that I really needed. However, I can't use Firefox 5.0, as I randomly checked 3 add-on's I had: "Firefox PDF", "Delicious Bookmarks" and "After the Deadline", and none of them worked with Firefox 5.0. In fact, I will have to download alpha versions, etc., to get these add-ons to work with Firefox 4.0.

    You can disable the Adobe Reader plugin in Firefox (Tools > Add-ons > Plugins) and use the external Adobe Reader application or Preview application instead.
    *Firefox > Preferences > Applications > Adobe PDF document : Use Adobe Reader
    PDF files may also be found under another entry like Portable document.
