How do i get google back as the search engine on the home page

I have upgraded my firefox browser. before i did google was the search engine in the center of the home page. Now there is only the firefox emblem above the search bar, and when I try a search frontier is the search engine. I would prefer google. How do I set google on the home page of firefox for the search box?

I suspect some toolbar has changed the search engine on my home page which is the standard Mozilla Firefox start Page. It used to be google but now is Ask. I want to change it back to Google.

You can open the about:config page via the location bar and do a search for ask.com via the Filter at the top of the about:config page. 
You can reset all ask.com related prefs that appear bold (user set) via the right-click context menu to their default values.
Start Firefox in [[Safe Mode]] to check if one of the extensions is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox (Tools) > Add-ons > Appearance/Themes).

How do I get Google back as my preferred search engine after this morning's "update" of OS X? Having spent a lot of time setting up a computer to work seamlessly the way I want in every respect, I really resent my time being wasted by "helpful" software engineers. I have tried changing it in the Firefox configuration, which no longer accepts anything other than Yahoo as either a home page or a search engine, all to no avail. The only thing has been changed since everything was working sweetly is the update of OS X a few hours ago.

What OS X update did you perform?
To change your default search engine in Safari: Safari menu > Preferences > General > Default search engine.
To change it with Firefox, click the icon at the left of the search field and choose one from the dropdown menu. If that does not work you may have to ask in a Mozilla support site.

To get Google back on the Safari Menu Bar, click on Safari in the upper left corner of the window>click on Preferences>click on the General tab>In the Default Search Engine box, select Google in the right hand drop down list.

You can check if you have the ZoneAlarm search engine file in the browser\searchplugins folder in the Firefox program or in the searchplugins folder in the Firefox profile folder.
You can use this button to go to the currently used Firefox profile folder:

You can delete the search.json file and possible search-metadata.json and search.sqlite files in the Firefox profile folder to reset the search engines to the default.

The + sign at the end of the tabs no longer takes me to the last current tabs or websites it instead takes me to google search. How do i get it back to my last tab for the website I visited?

A new tab opens by default as a blank tab (about:blank).
If that isn't the case then an extension has changed that behavior.

I am not up on the terminology. The second line on my screen has the forward and back arrows followed by "Go to a web Site" in a box followed by a second box that used to read Google but now reads Ask.com. I want to change this back to Google.

You will need to restore your device as New to remove a Restrictions passcode. Go through the normal process to restore your device, but when you see the options to restore as New or from a backup, be sure to choose New.

The best way to refine your searches is to start with Google's UK site. Is your Safari search window set to Google.com or Google.co.uk?
I use Inquisitor 3 to modify my search function. Once installed, its preference file is part of Safari Preferences. Open Safari Preferences and select the "Search" panel (if it doesn't appear, look for the >> at the end of the panels, click on that and you'll see "Search". In that panel you can modify your search needs based on a number of criteria, including making Google.co.uk your preferred search engine.
