How do I get iDVD5 to recognise my external DVD Drive ?

I have just bought a LaCie Double Layer bus-powered Firewire DVD. It is an NEC DVD+-RW ND-6550A device. The drive came with Toast 6 Titanium, which is now installed.
I also have an internal Matshita DVD reader/ CD writer as part of the original G4 setup.
When I attempt to burn a project in iDVD5.0.1, the internal drive opens up and I get a message telling me to insert a DVD, even though this is not a DVD writer. I've tried Control-clicking the Burn icon, but nothing different happens. There is no option for drive selection in the iDVD menu structure either.
I don't really want to spend ages writing Disk Images, then writing to the LaCie, and I've searched this forum for a similar issue - but 'fraid I can't find anything similar. Does anyone have any suggestions that will enable iDVD to recognise the external LaCie ?
Appreciate any advice
Paul

Don't skip this route - the amount of "extra" time is almost zero - in effect iDVD is doing this anyway behind the scenes to some degree. And separating encoding from burning makes a lot of sense. I always "Save as Disk Image" and burn separately.
And there is a guy that works for LaCie that frequent this forum:

I think you just need the proper disk burning profile from LaCie. You could probably e-mail Mike at the address on his profile. Or post a new thread titled "Question for Mike - LaCie Firewire and iDVD5"

DO you mean, how to put a Library on an external?
Make sure the drive is formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
    1. Quit iPhoto
    2. Copy the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to the External Disk.
    3. Hold down the option (or alt) key while launching iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library' and navigate to the new location. From that point on this will be the default location of your library.
    4. Test the library and when you're sure all is well, trash the one on your internal HD to free up space.

  • How do i get itunes to recognize my external dvd ?

I have a 3yr old iMac and the internal SuperDrive has given up the ghost.  I just bought an external dvd burner/reader and connected via USB.  When I insert a CD I can see the drive and the .wav files in Finder, yet I can't access the music CD from iTunes.  How can I get iTunes to see the external optical drive so I can import cds into my library ?
The external dvd writer is a(supposedly) Mac compatible Samsung SE-208

    Hi,
It adds the files to my iTunes as WAV audio files, but takes forever to do so and also doesn't do any of the clever things (such as looking up the track names with Gracenotes) as when I used to just put the CD in the imac drive slot.
I tested this specific cd in my wifes mac laptop, and it just recognises it, identifies the album and track names and starts importing - so at least I know this is just a regular music cd.
If it's a true audio CD, then the files on the disk cannot be WAV. If they're WAV on the disk, it's not a standard audio CD. Standard audio disks are PCM which will appear as AIFF when viewed in Finder on a Mac. I'm a bit suspicious that there's something else amiss with your system, but right now I can't guess quite what. Perhaps someone else will have an idea.

Check the manufacturer website if the device is supported on Yosemite.
If not, you can get a SuperDrive from Apple which can run on any OS X version.

  • Mac-format to PC-format: How can I get my music off an external hard drive?

I had a mac-formatted iPod for years, and all of my music is on an external hard drive that is hooked up to that computer. When I got a new iPod after mine was stolen, I had to get a PC-formatted iPod. How can I get my music off of the hard drive and onto my PC (and eventually my iPod)? I tried uploading the files into my iTunes account on the Mac, but they don't show up in my account on the PC. Most of the music are CDs that I copied onto my computer years ago, and had on my old iPod. Help!

Your Firefox profile would have the data. You can find it at:
    *C:\Users\<Windows login/user name>\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\<profile folder>
**The file you want is called ''places.sqlite''
You can copy that file if you want to restore your bookmarks to your current Firefox by going back to ''C:\Users\<Windows login/user name>\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\<profile folder>'' and overwriting the current file. Keep in mind, doing this will erase your current bookmarks.

  • How do I get data from a pc external hard drive to my mac

I am about to purchase an Air. I have an external hard drive I have used for years with my PC.  It has countless pictures and music.  How can I get that data from my PC external drive to my new Air and also to the Time Machine?

Thank you for your reply.  It is a Western Digital external USB 3.0 formatted for PC.  It includes pics, videos, music, documents, power point, etc.  would it still just be a drag and drop?
    Thanks!

  • HT201250 How do I get my information from my external hard drive to my MacBook Pro?

I have the WD My Passport for Mac external hard drive and backed up my computer last night.  Had my hard drive replaced today and now trying to get all my info back on my computer.  Tried using Time Machine, but I cant figure out how to get Time Machine to automatically put my info from the external drive onto my computer. Help please!

What follows assumes that you have been using Time Machine, backing up to that external drive.
The easiest way would be to connect the external drive, then reboot into Recovery HD. When you restart and you hear the chime, hold down the option key until the screen appears with the different drives displayed. Click Recovery HD.
In the screen that comes up, choose Restore from Time Machine Backup. You will then be given a choice of full backups to restore from; you would try the most recent one first.
Reply with problems or results please

  • How do I get my music from an external hard drive

I made the mistake of moving my music folder from my computer to my hard drive to free up space on the computer.  Now my ITunes doesn't know how to connect to my music.  It comes up as a set-up page, as if I had never had the account.  Any ideas?

Put it all back and make sure it works then post back.

Actually, what I meant to say is I moved my music to an external hard drive.
So what exactly did you move?

  • How do I get COnfigurator to use my external Hard drive?

I have a Macbook Air with a really dinky hard drive with which I am supervising 100+ iPods and other devices with Apple Configurator.  I filled up the hard drive after six months with Configurator stuff.  I bought a 2 Tb passport that I hooked up to the macbook and it immediately showed up.  Will the Macbook automatically start adding new files for Configurator onto the external drive as if it were additional space on the hard drive?  Will I have to move Configurator to the external hard drive?  How do I go about doing this?

disclaimer:  I do not know here apple configurator save the data.  I assume it saves the data in the home folder of the account on which it is run. ~/Documents is most likely.
    1) I'd move our home folder of account you run apple configurator under to the external hd.  Here is how:
    http://www.macworld.com/article/1164891/keeping_mac_os_and_data_on_separate_driv es.html
( your going to have to scroll down a bit.  there are a lot of ads on the above page.  look for "Keeping Mac OS and data on separate drive
You could create another account for daily office use when you do not have the external hd attached.
    2) another option would be to copy your entire "hd" to the external hd & boot from the external hd.
fyi: Holding down the option key then power on. This brings up the startup manager. Click on your hd. Click on right arrow key.
Carbon Copy Cloner will copy your startup drive to an external  firewire drive.  You can boot from the external drive to verify that you have a good clone. When you upgrade your existing startup drive, you can at any time boot from your external drive and go back to your existing system.

  • I have an external hard drive hooked up to my time capsule how do i get iTunes to recognize the external hard drive

i have an external hard drive hooked up to my time capsule andi can not get my macbook pro with itunes to recognize the hard drive. does the hard drive need to be formatted to my mac. it has been formatted and does have existing fles on it.  Thanks for the help in advance.

Well sometimes it won't boot, but the drive is fine.
You'll have to run through these steps and depending what occurs (or doesn't) will give you a clue, if you need to replace the drive and restore from the TM drive.
Step by Step to fix your Mac
My computer is dead, is my personal data lost?
Create a data recovery/undelete external boot drive
In the future, consider bootable clones, they are bootable, but TM drives are not.

  • How do I get my music form my external hard drive to show up in iTunes?

I have a five hundred GB hard drive with over 30000 songs on it that I would like to show up in Itunes. I don't have enough space for all of the songs on my computer though. I've gone through all the advanced setting and clicked the right files but they're not showing up in my iTunes library. I use iTunes for Windows, but the computer that all of the music came from was a computer that used a newer version. Could that be part of the problem or am I just doing something wrong?

In your iTunes menu, click "FILE, Add Folder to library", select your external Drive, then click the SELECT FOLDER Button.  All music in the external drive should appear in your iTunes.

  • Encore  isn't recognising an external DVD drive

I have a macbook pro with a disk drive that broke after a year so I had to buy an external one. This is the first time I've tried to burn a DVD using this external drive and when I press the build button the program tries to use the internal drive rather than the external one despite both of them powering up and making encouraging noises. The message pops up saying: Please insert DVD media, close the tray and click ok. Despite there being a DVD in the external drive but not the internal one, it insists on trying to use the internal. Is there a way to change the settings so it goes to the external drive instead?

In the build panel, with DVD disk selected as "output," under "destination," you should see "recorder," and a triangle for a drop down to select which drive.

  • HT1473 I want to keep my music on my external hard drive to free up room on my computer how do i get itunes to recognise the hard drive to play the music?

I would like to keep all my music on my external hard drive but I can't seem to get itunes to recognise my hard drive.  How do I get itunes to recognise my hard drive so I can play the music off there rather than copying the files over each time?

Click the icon to launch iTunes
Immediately press and hold down the shift key
Keep holding shift until asked to create or choose a library
If iTunes opens normally close and go back to step 1.
Browse to the iTunes Library.itl file you want to open.
