How do I get iLife back?

I bought a used macbook pro (i5 13") and on the box it says iLife is preinstalled but its not on there now. The guy I bought it from reinstalled the osx (lion) so when I turned it on I had to set it up but I didn't see an option for iLife. How do I reinstall iLife?

If your Mac shipped with Lion installed, then you should be able to download the iLife applications from the App Store without having to buy them.
If it shipped with an older version of the Mac OS, then you have an unlicensed copy, which you'll have to replace with a licensed copy. You should have received the original installation discs from the seller. If not, you'll have to order them from Apple customer service. Install the original software (including the bundled version of iLife), then upgrade to Lion if you wish.

A while ago I took my computer in to get fixed. Apparently, the motherboard was bad and had to be replaced. With no Applecare I had to fit the bill and my computer was restored to working order eventually.
At any rate, when I got my computer back it didn't have any of the software macs come with like imovie, iphoto, etc. At the time I didn't care because I never did video editing, or compose music and i had been using Bridge and Photoshop for photo editing.
however, now I would like to edit some videos and was wondering if there is a way I can restore the ilife software? I would especially like to know if i can do so for free, as I feel like as a mac owner I have an inherent right to atleast the most basic form of these programs. But if it isn't possible to do it for free, can i even get an upgrade without having the software on my computer?

Find the gray discs that came with your computer. There is probably a folder named "Additional software" of something similar. iLife is in that folder.

I have a Macbook Pro, 5,5. It's a few years old and was running slow. My son backed up my Microsoft Office documents and my photos onto a thumb drive and ran 'wiped my computer clean'...using a disc that came with my computer. (I am NOT computer savy at all).
I was able to reinstall the Mac OS X install DVD that came with my Mac, but IPHOTO, ILIFE did not reinstall. I transferred the word documents successfully, and my photos transferred to an icon on a 'library' on the desktop, but I can't use. How do i get IPHOTO back?
Any info would be greatly appreciated.

One more question - I initially decided to do this because my Mac kept opening with the date changed to 2008, and I keep having to re - enter my Web key. In addition, it was running much slower. Since I 'cleaned' everything out, I thought all would work perfect. This morning, the date changed to 2008; again AND it again asks for my Web key. Does this mean my Mac has reached it's almost end or could I have a 'bug' on it?

Mac OS X 10.6 includes QuickTime versions 10.0 and 7.6.3. The QuickTime 7 player will only be present if a QuickTime Pro key was present at the time of installation, or if specified as part of a custom install, or individually downloaded:

Snow Leopard update 10.6.4 included an update to 7.6.6 (if installed). You can install it from the above link even though it says for 10.6.3. It's the same version of QuickTime Player 7.6.6.
(Only QuickTime Player 7.6.3 or 7.6.6 can be updated to "Pro".)

How do I get iLife and iWork back after HD failure

While I was backing up my HD with Time Capsule the other day, it started to fail (yes, irony abounds).
Cloning didn't work and so I have a repair shop trying to recover my data. I did get a new HD and clean install of Lion (which is what I was using before the failure), but I don't have a complete Time Capsule backup.
What I do have is an older drag-and-drop copy of my User folder and almost all of my apps, but some of them, most notably iWork and iLife, do not drag-and-drop sucessfully.
I tried to go to the App Store, but it seems that there's no record of me buying iWork via the App Store (I can't remember how I bought it) and I can't seem to figure out a way to get iLife back.
What am I doing wrong?
Also, alas, my AppleCare has expired, so the Genius Bar isn't an option.

But of course, my point never was that Apple should "give it away for free." But if disaster strikes, then I don't see a problem with Apple offering re-downloads of AAC files that...
1. the customer has already paid for, and...
2. to a customer that can be positively identified (i.e. can login to the iTunes Store with the same credentials used to purchase the material originally), and...
3. to one of the customer's "authorized" computers.
This just seems like a complete no-brainer of a customer goodwill policy.

You can most certainly try running the bundled app installer off the 10.6 machine specific disks, however I think it's going to barf on you.
You then use Pacifist from CharlesSoft to extract your god given right to free iLife and place it back onto your 10.7 drive, run the update and it should get updated.

If you purchased the machine new and it had OS X 10.7 or 10.8 on it, then you will have to talk to Apple because basically it's another machine as you likely had your logicboard switched, thus it has a different serial number and all AppStore software is copy protected and tied to your AppleID.
If your machine originally came with 10.4, 10.5, or 10.6, then you can try to see if those installers will work as the iLife is on the disks, or you can use Pacifist from Charlesoft to extract the apps and put them on your machine, then Software Update so the versions are current.

Contact the people who serviced your Mac and removed it - there porbably is more missing
You can reinstall it from the original source - the restore disks taht came with yoru computer or the purchused iLife DVD or the App store

You should know that OS X hasn't got iPhoto, iMovie and GarageBand preinstalled, so you have to install them manually after reinstalling OS X.

If your Mac came with DVDs or you didn't purchase those apps in the App Store, insert the Applications DVD or Mac OS X Install Disc 2 that came with your Mac, and install iLife applications. Then, open  > Software Update to install the latest version
