How do I get it where my iPod will sync again, it pops up with an error message everytime this iPod cannot be used because the Apple Mobile Device service is not started

I plug my I-Phone 3gs into iTunes on my laptop and this error comes up : :This iPhone cannot be used because the Apple Mobile Device service is not started". Can someone please help me with this. All of a sudden my computer keeps popping up with a message saying "this ipad cannot be used because the apple mobile device service is not started" I am trying to sync some programmes that my son has deleted off his ipad. Previously I have been able to log into itunes, plug my ipad into the computer and it just syncs automatically. Can someone PLEASE help me.

On my registered iTunes computer, the following message appears every time one plugs in a device and refuses to load said device to be synced: "This iPod cannot be used because the Apple Mobile Device service is not started". Each device has been registered onto this account and this computer, and all have worked finely in the past. I am so confused as to why now seemingly without reason, none of our apple devices (one iPod, two iPhones) are allowed to have music and other material downloaded onto them. Also, as a side note, they still are charged by plugging them into the computer, however they do not even show up on the left-hand sidebar in iTunes.
