How do I get iTunes to auto-create a folder for newly added music?

I used to add files into a new folder (literally named "New Folder"), play the songs from the folder (not iTunes), and iTunes would create a new folder appropriate for the artist and album, moving the songs to that new folder. Anyone know how to turn this feature on?

This feature is usually called "Watch Folders", and iTunes doesn't have anything like that.

I have files in my iTunes media folder that somehow are not in my library. How do I get iTunes to scan my media folder and add missing files to my library without making a copy of each file in the same location? If I use add file / folder to library, it scans the folder and then makes a copy of any file that is not in my library in the exact same location; I recal in older versions of iTunes being able to just drag my media folder into my library and it would update missing links.

Only the songs that are connected to iTunes will be copied when you consolidate to a new folder.
Splitting the media folder away from the usual location makes it harder to move iTunes in the future.
Are you go move everything back once you've tidied up or are you going to leave it that way? Either way I'd recommend you create an iTunes folder at the new location, an iTunes Media folder inside that, and consolidate to this new iTunes Media folder. You should also use the option File > LIbrary > Organize Library > Rearrange files in the folder "<Media Folder"> if you have not already done so.

  • HT1473 I want to keep my music on my external hard drive to free up room on my computer how do i get itunes to recognise the hard drive to play the music?

I would like to keep all my music on my external hard drive but I can't seem to get itunes to recognise my hard drive.  How do I get itunes to recognise my hard drive so I can play the music off there rather than copying the files over each time?

Click the icon to launch iTunes
Immediately press and hold down the shift key
Keep holding shift until asked to create or choose a library
If iTunes opens normally close and go back to step 1.
Browse to the iTunes Library.itl file you want to open.

Right-click the track in the library, and choose Show in Windows Explorer.
If you were hoping to get the file path displayed in a column, as is possible in Windows Media Player, note that iTunes does not have that ability.

  • How can I get Itunes to just create a route to an external hard drive instead of copying all my music onto my internal disc?

I have been trying to start using Itunes again, I have a large amount of music on external hard drives and not a large amount of disc space, on my windows version Itunes could use it's library in the hard drive so Itunes would use a directory path to the song file. When trying to import onto my Macbook Air it keeps trying to copy the song files, resulting in a message that says I haven't got enough disc space.
    Any Ideas?
    Kind Regards,

    One approach:
Open the menu Edit > Preferences...
    Select the Advanced tab.
Uncheck Copy files to iTunes Media folder when adding to library.
This will stop iTunes from wanting to copy everything onto the internal drive any time you add content. This is marginally easier than remembering to hold down the ALT key, however in this scheme iTunes Store purchases, podcasts etc. would still end up on the internal drive.
Alternatively you can store the entire library on the external drive. Close iTunes if it is open, then copy the existing iTunes folder from your profile to the root of the external drive. Click the icon to launch iTunes and immediately hold down the Option key so that you get the following dialog box:
Click Choose Library... browse to /iTunes on the external drive and select the library file iTunes Library. Now that library is on the external you can move any new content you want to add to the library into the folder /iTunes/iTunes Media/Automatically add to iTunes to have it added to the library and organized by it without creating duplicates, or filling up the internal drive.
Ideally you should get another drive so that you can make a backup copy of your library on a separate physical disk.

  • How can I get iTunes to automatically find the file for songs marked with ! without manually doing each one?

Ok, we've had a problem with our external hard drive which holds all of our music files (our H drive).  It's the 2nd time going down and we're just chalking it up as a failure.  Fortunately, we had it all backed up onto another external hard drive (our G drive).  We re-did iTunes back in February (bringing all the files in, sorting, playlists, etc) after fixing it the first time.  So I have that exact files from then (on the G drive) minus a new CD or two, nothing major.  But when I open that iTunes library, it doesn't find the music that is connected to it - even though all the music is in the folder connected to the library (all in G drive).  I'm not sure if this file is still trying to look for my H drive folder.
I found a previous question asked on here about the ! songs.  I brought in all the music from the iTunes/Music folder.  So of course, I have double now.  I would just go delete all the rest - except for this.  What about my playlists??   I don't really want to recreate each one manually.  I have also adjusted a ton of info in iTunes over the years to make things easier (fixed spelling when it brings it from a CD wrong, etc).  That brings me back to wondering if I could have iTunes automatically search for its own file instead of me doing it for 7,500+ songs.
Any ideas??   Or am I just stuck doing a lot of work?
    Thanks!

If what is on the G: drive is a mirror of what was on the H: drive, then get Windows to change the drive letter of G: to H:
If a simple fix isn't forthcoming then my FindTracks script should be able to reconnect the missing tracks to iTunes. FindTracks uses some fuzzy matching routines and searches for multiple potential locations. For more details see this thread.

  • How do I get iTunes to scan my media folder and add missing files?

    Hi All!!
I recently copied my iTunes library from my macbook to set up iTunes Server on my Sinology NAS. I did this by changing my iTunes Media Folder Location in the Advanced Settings tab, and then consolidating my library. I then changed my Media Folder Location back to my iTunes Media folder on my macbook to be able to play my local media.
However, now my local iTunes thinks some of my library is on my server and doesn't see the local, original file. Whenever I disconnect from the server my iTunes does not locate my local media content (which was not changed or modified during the process). The only solution so far is to individually locate each song. Is there a better way of doing this? Is there a way to make iTunes scan my iTunes Music folder to find the song locations, without duplicating the songs in my library and deleting the play counts/ratings???
I have already tried opening iTunes with the option key held, and selected my local iTunes media folder/library; however, I am still having the same problem
    Any help is GREATLY appreciated.
    Thank you!
    PiotrowskiM

    Hi Limnos,
Thank you very much for your prompt response!!
My goal, when I consolidated my files to my NAS, was to create a copy of my library on my NAS to be used for iTunes server, so I can stream the media to my PC's in my house. I did this following an instruction guide made by Synology. However, I did not intend for my macbook to stream media from the server. Ideally I would like for my iTunes in my macbook to just use my local files, which have not been changed/modified.
In summary, is there any way to point my iTunes to ONLY my local files???
Thank you again for all your help!

  • We have one computer and two users. How do we get itunes to keep our apps separate for our iphones 3gs?

I'm new to iphones and Apple in general. I'm not tech savvy at all. My husband and I just got the iphone 3gs (separate phones). Itunes wants to put the same apps on both phones (one computer). Can we stop this? We don't want the same apps on our phones. Thanks.

Instead of syncing all apps just select the ones you want on your device. I am assuming your using the same apple ID. Just plug in phone select it from the left side of itunes then select the apps tab and uncheck the apps you dont want. Itunes will remember settings for each device.

  • How can I get iTunes to update play counts and file additions between users on the same computer?

I have placed my iTunes library in /Users/Shared/iTunes along with iTunes Music Library.XML
When I open iTunes, all the music is displayed correctly with playcounts etc...
The problem is, when a playcount or album info is updated it does not carry over to the other user on the same computer. The same with adding new files to the iTunes library...
How can I get iTunes to auto-update between users?
    Thanks

Even though it's physically possible, I doubt an iPod is intended to work that way. Why do you want to do that?

What I believe you're seeing is the disk drive function of your iPod, which is different from the music player function. I'd give up trying to play music from your iPod while connected to a Time Capsule.

  • How do I get iTunes to see my music on a server

    Hi,
I have alot of music on a seperate server, how do I get iTunes to see this. I have tried adding it as a folder however when I shut the computer down and come back to it again it can't locate the music. Any ideas?

Apple provides repeat downloads as a convenience, not a substitute for your computers being the primary source of file transfers.  All your iTunes information such as playlists, ratings, etc. are in a file on your computer, not in the Apple Store.  Typically when you move computers you copy the whole iTunes folder and everything it contains to the new computer.  Moving media files can be done with a drive, or by Home Sharing.  You can also redownload media but let's say somebody desiced Apple may no longer sell a certain album; it cannot be downloaded again but if you already have it on a computer you can move your copy of the file.

Okay, my 5 minute typing limit for any one response is up.
