How do I get iTunes to link to the music in a new location?

OK, so right before the hard drive where all my music files originally were located, died, I backed up all my music files the prescribed way via the iTunes support article to a different, external hard drive. I then option-opened iTunes to select the new iTunes music media folder location, no problem.
BUT - when I click on any of my music titles, iTunes says the file "could not be used because it could not be found. Would you like to locate it?" I have close to 300GB worth of music files. It would be a pain to "re-link" every file one by one. How else can I do this???
I apologize if this has been answered before, but I searched for a while and could not find the exact same problem. Thanks, in advance, for any help.

i'm guessing you mean this article: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1751.
unfortunately, this will only backup your media files but not the heart of your library, the iTunes library file. in the library file, location of the media files, playcounts, ratings, etc. are stored.

unless you have a copy of said iTunes library file, the only option i can think of is this script:
_*iTunes Track CPR v1.3*_
This script attempts to locate the files of so-called "dead tracks"--iTunes tracks designated with (!)--that you assume are not actually missing but are still located in the iTunes Music folder in their "iTunes File Order" (Music -> Artist -> Album -> file.xxx)."

I can not store all my Music on my internal Macbook pro hard drive so I am storing it on a large external drive connected to my airport extreme (2 TB drive plugged into the USB port).  I see the drive on my laptop and I can add and delete files no problem.  How do I get Itunes to search for the music here with out trying to copy it to my laptop's hard drive?  I don't have enough space to do that.

How did you move the music to the external drive?  What exactly is on the drive?  The entire iTunes folder or only music?  If it is the entire iTunes folder you can do the option+start suggestion earlier.  If you copied only music and did so by dragging it there then you need to delete it again and consolidate/organize it there instead so iTunes tracks the move.  iTunes 12 for Mac: Change where your iTunes files are stored - http://support.apple.com/kb/PH19507

Select the desired location in preferences, then consolidate the media files to it.

  • How do I get itunes do find all my music?

iTunes cannot locate multiple files from my library; they have not moved or changed. How do I get itunes do find all my music again. There are over 15,000 songs in my library - about half have an exclamation mark in my playlists.

Hmm, not sure I understand how that might have happened. It seems as if the media folder has been pointed to the wrong level, put in a pre-iTunes 9 layout and then updated. All the <Artist> folders should be moved from iTunes to iTunes\iTunes Media\Music. Assuming iTunes moved the files around the filenames should be as expected. WMP, for example. might use different character substitutions for illegal characters and can user longer file and folder names. If anything remains broken FindTracks can take up the slack.

  • How do I get itunes to stop adjusting the volume

    Hi
I am running iTunes 11.0.2.25 and am really annoyed at how iTunes keeps adjusting the volume on me during playback. I am not talking about the 'sound check' or 'sound enhancer' or any other option that I can see in iTunes. They are all set to 'off'. What I am talking about is while I play a song and turn up the volume, iTunes adjusts it down automatically. I can keep doing this until the volume level is at 100% and the volume barely increases - or increases or a moment and then quietens down again. If I move the volume control to say 25%, the volume becomes almost inaudible, but then iTunes gradually increases the volume automatically to a seemingly random level.
How do I get iTunes to leave the friggin volume alone? Or is this something that can't be controlled?
I have looked at adjusting the 'Volume Adjustment' in the 'Get Info' area of individual songs and the setting there makes no difference whatsoever. I am ready to give up entirely on this piece of flawed software if there is no answer to this problem.
Again, I have diabled the 'sound check' option in 'Preferences', so it is not that.
Does anyone know how to get iTunes to play the song as it was recorded digitally without changing it?
My gratitude in advance for a resolution.

Yes, you'll have to individually add each new song that you've downloaded.
When you add them to iTunes--you're just adding the file path to the location on your computer. When you move the file location, iTunes won't know where to look for it and will give you the infamous "!" symbol. Then you'll have to browse to the new location and tell iTunes where to find it.
How many new songs do you add at a time? If it's not many, it's probably easiest to just add them one file at a time.
To find the new songs, the file names should be good clues--they are fairly complete song titles on my computer.
And, you might want to do this each time you download a new song so you don't forget to add them!

  • I removed my podcast from iTunes, and now I can't get it back on iTunes. How do I get Itunes to add to the Itunes Store?

When I resubmit my RSS feed, it says it has already been submitted. So I can't get my lisyn podcast back on iTunes. How do I get iTunes to add my iTunes stores? Help Roger Wilmut!
    My RSS feed is feed://filmception.libsyn.com//rss

I have, and currently have two podcast of the same name in the iTunes database. One appears in the store and one does not (because I believe I removed it)
If you go to iTunes and go to file, subscribe to podcast, and put in my libsyn feed
    http://filmception.libsyn.com/rss
it will subscibe you to it. And you'll see the artist info is different then my other podcast (three names)
If you go to itunes and go to file, subscribe to podcast, and put in my podomatic feed
    http://filmceptionpodcast.podomatic.com/rss2.xml
it will subscribe you to it. And you'll see the artist info (just my name)
Are you saying that iTunes removed my libsyn podcast off the store and not me. And is still available to play, and update episodes. But removed it off the store because podomatic exist?
I've know way of knowing what went on before; but the situation at present is that only the one version is in the Store and it's using the Podomatic feed.
If you try to submit the Libsyn feed that was removed, one way or another, then you will be told it's already been submitted unless you can make sufficient changes to it to make it look like a different podcast. The title is slightly different from the Podomatic feed, and if it's still being rejected then you will have to try to replace the Podomatic feed with the Libsyn feed. This probably means emailing Support as I doubt you can add the redirection tag to the Podomatic feed (though you could try first.)
They might respond to an email request (they've been known to do so in the past) or they might not. I don't know whether Robert would be able to put in a request - he would swing more weight with them - but very likely they will only do it (if at all) for the actual owner, for security reasons.

  • My iPod screen broke and I bought a new one, how do I get iTunes to un-recognize the old one (i heard you can only have 5 devices).

I have  new iPod Nano.  I want to set it up w/ the same name as my old one.  I heard you can only hve 5 devices, so since I'll never use the original one again, how do I get iTunes to know that it is no longer?

You do not need to do anyhting.
You can sync as many devices as you like.

  • How do I get iTunes to maximize to the full screen instead of maximizing off the screen?

Whenever I maximize iTunes, the right most section of the window extends further to the right than the monitor does. How do I get iTunes to recognize my screen's size?

the way that you do this is go to your control panel and adjust your screen resolution to one lower then when it asks if you want to revert back to the correct screen size say yes and then ever time you start windows form a complete reboot you have to do this step every time, its annoying I know but it is the only solution that i have found that works

  • How do I get itunes to not list the same artist more than once?

How do I get ituens to not list the same artist more than once?  I have tried editing the info, sorting different ways and sometimes it works and sometimes not...it's very frustrating to me to have the same artist listed multiple times...

Setting a common Album Artist for each Album does most of the work. For deeper problems see Grouping tracks into albums.
In general you need to make sure that all the values in the tags are used consistently. Same spelling, same capitalization, same accents, no leading, trailing, or multiple spaces, and each value of Artist, Album Artist or Album should only be associated with one value of Sort Artist, Sort Album Artist or Sort Album respectively.

I use itunes 11 to play music from my external hard drive and when i am finished using the hard drive and disconnect it the artist and songs appear in the itunes libary and when i click on it to play them it cannot locate the file and i assume this is becuse under the advanced prefrences tab i unchecked the auomaticly add played music to itunes library. Do you have a working copy of the library anywhere? The key file is called iTunes Library.itl and normally exists inside <User's Music>\iTunes. This is the file that knows what is in your library and each of the playlists, and holds ratings, play counts etc. Changing the media folder path in preferences tells iTunes where you'd like it to store media in future. It doesn't magically connect iTunes to any media that might already be there, or fix links to media that has been moved, or make it pick up a non-existent library file. If the worst comes to it you will need to import the media into the new empty library.
See Recover your iTunes library from your iPod or iOS device if you have any of these to recover ratings, play stats and playlists, and to associate your device with the new library.
