How do I get iTunes to recognize my iPod without losing all of my music?

I keep all of my music on an external harddrive. My computer crashed and once I fixed everything and reloaded all of the software, I tried connecting my iPod. All of my music is on the external harddrive and on my iPod, but I can't get iTunes to synchronize. I don't want to redo all of my playlists. Is there a way to get iTunes to communicate with my iPod without losing anything?

Even though it's physically possible, I doubt an iPod is intended to work that way. Why do you want to do that?

What I believe you're seeing is the disk drive function of your iPod, which is different from the music player function. I'd give up trying to play music from your iPod while connected to a Time Capsule.

All that is required is to sync your iPod Touch with iTunes. This creates a complete backup of all its content.

It does not appear there when you connect it?
When you connect it, does anything happen on the iPod's screen? Does the iPod's battery charge when connected? Does the iPod still work (as an iPod) for listening to its music?

They should be in your itunes media folder. Use an external hard drive and just copy that to your new computer. I'm sure there's an easier way like this one (iTunes>File>Library>Export Library>External Hard Drive) but I never tried it before. Anyways, once that's done, just simply authorize your itunes account to play music you bought on to the new computer.

First of all, I think the first time you sync an iPod that's formatted for Windows on a Mac, the sync process reformats it for Mac. You can check what it is now by looking for the iPod with Disk Utility. If it's Mac OS Extended, it's formatted for Mac already.
Also, there is no current iPod updater app these days. iTunes handles it through the Restore button. If you are not able to use the latest iTunes because of your Mac, I can understand. The latest version of iTunes should run with 10.3.9 or later, if the hardware can handle it.
You said the battery was low so let it recharge for a while.
You should also reset the iPod. It's part of the 5Rs, which you should go through as the starting point for iPod trouble-shooting.
