How do I get iTunes to remember to store music on ext. HD?

I've followed the instructions (http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=301748) on how to store your Music Folder on an external hard drive (my ibook is overflowing with music and is otherwise fine - memory wise - with the music on the external hd). However now that I've done this and add more music it prompts me each time to locate where to store the music. How do I get it to remember where to store the music? any help is appreciated!
Also, I'm reluctant to update to 7 until I solve the problem.

I am going to restore my Macbook Pro to it's factory condition. I do this every once in a while because it seems to improve performance. I backup everything to an external drive and then I restore only what I want from my backup drive. In iTunes I have renamed a lot of my songs. Last time I cleaned off my mac and restored/reloaded my music I had to rename all those songs again. It took me about 2 weeks to reorganize my music. How do I get iTunes to remember all of those names and keep everything exactly the same when I restore/reload the music into iTunes?

It may seem like it does but it really doesn't.
Just delete stuff you don't want.

Use Time Machine, backup everything, do the reinstall (I recommend you don't do it) then restore your user folder with Time Machine.

  • I can not store all my Music on my internal Macbook pro hard drive so I am storing it on a large external drive connected to my airport extrem.  How do I get Itunes to search for the music here with out trying to copy it to my laptops hard drive??

I can not store all my Music on my internal Macbook pro hard drive so I am storing it on a large external drive connected to my airport extreme (2 TB drive plugged into the USB port).  I see the drive on my laptop and I can add and delete files no problem.  How do I get Itunes to search for the music here with out trying to copy it to my laptop's hard drive?  I don't have enough space to do that.

How did you move the music to the external drive?  What exactly is on the drive?  The entire iTunes folder or only music?  If it is the entire iTunes folder you can do the option+start suggestion earlier.  If you copied only music and did so by dragging it there then you need to delete it again and consolidate/organize it there instead so iTunes tracks the move.  iTunes 12 for Mac: Change where your iTunes files are stored - http://support.apple.com/kb/PH19507

  • PC related question.  How do I get iTunes to sync/backup/store to my D: rather than C: ?

How do I get iTunes to sync/backup/store to my D: rather than C: ?

A couple of options.  Do you want your whole library on the other drive or just media?  You can split media between drives starting with now, but this will be a big nuisance when you come to move your library in the future.

Quick answer if you use iTunes' default preferences settings:  Copy the entire iTunes folder (and in doing so all its subfolders and files) intact to the other drive.  Open iTunes and immediately hold down the Option (alt) key (shift on Windows), then guide it to the new location of the library.

  • How do I get itunes do find all my music?

iTunes cannot locate multiple files from my library; they have not moved or changed. How do I get itunes do find all my music again. There are over 15,000 songs in my library - about half have an exclamation mark in my playlists.

Hmm, not sure I understand how that might have happened. It seems as if the media folder has been pointed to the wrong level, put in a pre-iTunes 9 layout and then updated. All the <Artist> folders should be moved from iTunes to iTunes\iTunes Media\Music. Assuming iTunes moved the files around the filenames should be as expected. WMP, for example. might use different character substitutions for illegal characters and can user longer file and folder names. If anything remains broken FindTracks can take up the slack.

  • How do i get itunes 11 to stop adding music played from external hard drive to itunes library

I use itunes 11 to play music from my external hard drive and when i am finished using the hard drive and disconnect it the artist and songs appear in the itunes libary and when i click on it to play them it cannot locate the file and i assume this is becuse under the advanced prefrences tab i unchecked the auomaticly add played music to itunes library. I do not want my external hard drive music to be added to itunes library which at this point it does not but it is still showing the music in the library even though it cannot be played this is very fustrating please help. how do i get the artist and songs played from the external hardrive from appering in the itunes library.

Do you have a working copy of the library anywhere? The key file is called iTunes Library.itl and normally exists inside <User's Music>\iTunes. This is the file that knows what is in your library and each of the playlists, and holds ratings, play counts etc. Changing the media folder path in preferences tells iTunes where you'd like it to store media in future. It doesn't magically connect iTunes to any media that might already be there, or fix links to media that has been moved, or make it pick up a non-existent library file. If the worst comes to it you will need to import the media into the new empty library.
See Recover your iTunes library from your iPod or iOS device if you have any of these to recover ratings, play stats and playlists, and to associate your device with the new library.

  • How do i get itunes to sync all my music between my imac and my macbook?

    Hi!
I have all my music stored currently on my imac. With icloud, i was under the impression that all my music would be able to be synced over to my imac for when i am not at home. It seems that any new songs i buy from itunes are synced across and available on both devices but is it possiblt to sync everything across (including things i purchased before icloud)?
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

The two computers do not sync.  It appears that you have successfully enabled automatic downloads for both computers, which is great for new purhases.
For purchases before automatic downloads, you'll have to go get them for each computer.  You'll be able to download them all or just the ones not currently in your library.  This explains how:  Downloading past purchases from the App Store, iBookstore, and iTunes Store: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2519

  • How do I get iTunes to link to the music in a new location?

OK, so right before the hard drive where all my music files originally were located, died, I backed up all my music files the prescribed way via the iTunes support article to a different, external hard drive. I then option-opened iTunes to select the new iTunes music media folder location, no problem.
BUT - when I click on any of my music titles, iTunes says the file "could not be used because it could not be found. Would you like to locate it?" I have close to 300GB worth of music files. It would be a pain to "re-link" every file one by one. How else can I do this???
I apologize if this has been answered before, but I searched for a while and could not find the exact same problem. Thanks, in advance, for any help.

i'm guessing you mean this article: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1751.
unfortunately, this will only backup your media files but not the heart of your library, the iTunes library file. in the library file, location of the media files, playcounts, ratings, etc. are stored.
How else can I do this???
unless you have a copy of said iTunes library file, the only option i can think of is this script:
    _*iTunes Track CPR v1.3*_
This script attempts to locate the files of so-called "dead tracks"--iTunes tracks designated with (!)--that you assume are not actually missing but are still located in the iTunes Music folder in their "iTunes File Order" (Music -> Artist -> Album -> file.xxx)."

  • After HD crash, restoring to new HD. Library files missing or corrupt. How can I get iTunes 10 to see my music

The hard drive on my fairly new HP Pavilion desktop died hard on boot-up. HP replaced the drive the next day.  Used the Recovery Disks and got the unit up and running. I have been using Memeo Premium Backup and never did get any error messages during backup.  When I went to restore the data, much of it is missing or corrupt. In the Restore data on the backup drive, I can see many folders but only a few have data.  I opened a ticket with Memeo and after they made a few useless comments, they closed the ticket.
Fortunately, most of my iTunes data (folders and files) were restored in-tact.  The exceptions were the library files, which are missing. The library files in the Previous Itunes Library folder were corrupted.  I installed iTunes 10, but there are no songs, podcasts, etc, in it.  I have tried every article in the knowledgebase and tried to fix the ITL and XML files, but it is hopeless. Also, when iTunes is running, at the top it shows .iTunes Preferences.plist.  So, I have a disaster and about 10 gb of music going nowhere.  Any ideas?  I would really appreciate any help I can get.
    Brad

They are all mostly the same size at around 6MB but there are a couple that are very large 55MB (including the 30 tmp file I mentioned above.  There is also one around 7KB).  I tried renaming the most recent (as of 8:30PM last night)  tmp file as iTunes Library.itl but when I launch iTunes, I get the "The file 'iTunes Library.itl" cannot be read because it was created by a newer version of iTunes" popup.
But when I go into a directory I created to get the most recent itl file I've been saving as a backup and copy it into the iTunes directory to replace the one that I tried to make with the tmp file, and launch iTunes, my whole library loads with no problem.
However, if history repeats itself, this will work for at most a couple of days before I have to copy the saved itl file back into the iTunes directory.

  • How do I get iTunes Match to upload my music library from my external hard drive?  It only got some of the music and not a lot of it at that.

I'm trying iTunes Match and not having a great time of it so far.  It only got a fraction of my music from my music library.  I contacted support and they told me that it would recognize my external hard drive and take all of the music.  My collection is all from CDs with the exception of a few from iTunes.  I just want more of my collection to be available.
    Can anyone help with that

The issue is not related to the external drive. iTunes Match has difficulties matching tracks ripped fom CDs because they may differ slightly from the versions on sale in iTunes. You can try the match again. Otherwise do a search of this forum. There are already many discussions on this subject here that may help you.

  • I clicked and drug music into my itunes library folder inI clicked and drug music folders stead of adding it with itunes. how do i get itunes to see the new music?

I drug music folders into my itunes folder instead of useing the add folder feature in itunes. What do I do now to allow iTunes to see and play this new music? There is now about 40 gigs of music like this in a 140 gig library.

    NTG,
Dragging them into the iTunes folder does not add them to the library.  However, you can still add them to the library by finding the new location you dragged it to, and using the command File > Add folder to library.
