How do I get iTunes to use the iTunes folder on an external drive?  Windows 7

I have used iTunes on an external drive on a Windows XP machine.  I moved the drive to a Windows 7 computer, authorized it with Apple.  However, when I go to preferences/advanced and try to change the Media folder location, the location is changed but the music is not recognized in Itunes.  Help!

I experimented and discovered the solution by trial and error.  I don't understand why this is not documented in a way that a naive user would understand.  It is step 2, below, that is not obvious.  Unless you know that there is this thing called a library and that you must import it, you would be at a dead end.  I originally assumed that when I point iTunes to the folder on the external drive where iTunes was located it would recognize everything from there.
1.  When installing iTunes, if music iTunes Library is on another disk, In iTunes Go to Edit/Preferences/Advanced - select the iTunes media on the other disk.
2.  In order to bring in the library & playlists, in iTunes, Go to File/Library/import Playlist go to the iTunes  location on the other disk and select the file iTunes Library.  The file type is labeled XML document.
This will bring in the songs, albums and playlists.

  • I suddenly lost all my access to my songs.  I have them on an external drive.  How do I get iTunes to recognize my external drive as my library source like it always has been?

I was using my iTunes Library and it is now gone.  I have my songs stored on an external drive.  I checked the connections and they seem OK.  I can't get the iTunes screen to show the sync button nor find my library.  Does anyone have a suggestion?

Was the media solely on the external library?  If so, it is likely that iTunes was started at some point with the external drive unaccessible.  Simply point iTunes to the correct library location.  To do this, close iTunes.  Hold <SHIFT> and launch iTunes.  When prompted to find library or create a new one, select the find option and point iTunes to where the iTuneslibrary.itl file is at on your computer (or external drive).

The template is a document in itself, it is not applied to an existing document whether it is a Pages document or a Word document converted to a Pages document.
You would need to either copy and paste content, using existing styles, or apply the styles to the converted Word document.
You can Import the Styles from an existing document and those imported Styles can be used to override the current document's styles:
Menu > Format > Import Styles
The process is simplified if the styles use the same names, otherwise you will need to delete the style you don't want and replace it with the one that you do want when asked, then the substitution is pretty straightforward.

If you have the iPhone in front of you, here's how you can learn the carrier:
Go to Settings > General > About and look at the "Network" row near the top.  There's your carrier's name!

  • How do i get itunes to recognize my external dvd ?

I have a 3yr old iMac and the internal SuperDrive has given up the ghost.  I just bought an external dvd burner/reader and connected via USB.  When I insert a CD I can see the drive and the .wav files in Finder, yet I can't access the music CD from iTunes.  How can I get iTunes to see the external optical drive so I can import cds into my library ?
The external dvd writer is a(supposedly) Mac compatible Samsung SE-208

    Hi,
It adds the files to my iTunes as WAV audio files, but takes forever to do so and also doesn't do any of the clever things (such as looking up the track names with Gracenotes) as when I used to just put the CD in the imac drive slot.
I tested this specific cd in my wifes mac laptop, and it just recognises it, identifies the album and track names and starts importing - so at least I know this is just a regular music cd.
If it's a true audio CD, then the files on the disk cannot be WAV. If they're WAV on the disk, it's not a standard audio CD. Standard audio disks are PCM which will appear as AIFF when viewed in Finder on a Mac. I'm a bit suspicious that there's something else amiss with your system, but right now I can't guess quite what. Perhaps someone else will have an idea.

  • Moving iTunes folder to an external drive.  How ?

My pBook 17" is bloated with iPhoto PICS and iTunes music store purchases. Moving the photo library, and running it off of the LACIE external FW 800 drive was easy. Not with iTunes. I moved the entire iTunes folder to the external, but every time I launch iTunes on the PBook it opens a blank library. How do I get iTunes to recognize the library on the external HD, without a lose of date added, etc. Apple Care was no help, and had no answer. BTW, after erasing the iTunes library from my PB HD, and moving the library back to the PB, everything works as normal. The iTunes library is 10 gB in size BTW.
    thanks in advance, rick

It's not hard to overlook something obvious, happens to me too once in a while, so let's start from scratch.
Forget the KB article for know. I just performed all the steps in it on a 'test' account with a small (test) library, and could not detect any anomalies.
The article is OK, but might not be 100% clear (I second William's remark)
    Steps to do:
    • Quit iTunes (and other applications that use the EHD)
    • Unmount and disconnect your external HD.
    • Run iTunes and verify that you can play all music. If OK, then it has to be on the Powerbook. If you are presented with exclamation marks, it was already on the EHD.
    • You've consolidated the Library a couple of times now, so it should be all together in ~Users/YourUsername/Music/iTunes/iTunes Music.
    • Connect your EHD
    • In iTunes, change the 'iTunes Music folder location' to the location on your EHD, where you want the music to be. To be sure, create a new folder.
    • Now 'Consolidate Library...' again. iTunes will start copying the music. If it doesn't, I'll eat my hat (to be honest, I don't have a hat).
    Let know what happens.

  • By backing up the iTunes Library via saving the iTunes folder on an external drive, is it also backing up all iPad and iPhone backups as well as App Data and Documents from your devices?

If I backup my iTunes Library by saving the iTunes folder on an external hard drive using the instructions contained in the link below, will it also back up all my iPad and iPhone backups as well as App Data and Documents from my devices? In other words, will it also create backups for the backups? Thank you.
Back up your iTunes library by copying it to an external drive
Furthermore, when it is time to restore the iTunes folder I copied to my external drive to a new iTunes program on my new computer, how will it merge the information once I plug in my iPad or iPhone to that new laptop to sync? If I did the iTunes library backup a couple months ago and I've added documents/music/pictures on my devices since then, what will happen when I try to sync it with the new laptop now working off of the iTunes library backup from a couple months ago since the information is no longer the same? Which information will dominate and thus be kept? Will it delete the new information/data/pictures/documents/music off of the devices since it is not on the iTunes program when it syncs?
Sorry for so many questions, but they are all related to backing up and restoring iTunes. I am not very tech savvy if you cannot tell

It would be a good idea to look into a bigger hard drive. They are not that expensive any more and can save a lot of headach. This is even more important if you are buying music from the iTunes music store. If you lost those files they are gone.
The point of having it on your PC and iPod is to have a backup. If the iPod fails, or you need to go back to the DVDs and find they are scratched, or just can not be read you have lost days of work converting and organizing all of those songs.
Or the iPod could hard drive could fail and then you will have to try to bring all of those files back from DVDs. You end up with a mess since some songs will probably be on multiple DVDs, have different names ect. Trying to reorganize it all can be a pain.

  • How do I get Mozilla to use the page name for the actual bookmark name instead of the URL when I bookmark a page

I just noticed this (in comparison to Internet Explorer): In IE, when you favorite a webpage, it uses the actual name of the webpage (for example, for this page, it would be "Ask a Question Firefox Help" as the bookmark name), but in Mozilla it uses the URL address as the bookmark name. I was wondering if it was at all possible to change my Mozilla settings in order to make it use the webpage name as the bookmark name instead of the URL address? I hope everyone understands what I'm getting at? If anyone can help me, I would really appreciate it. Thanks.
