How do I get Java to work?

The trading platform at my stockbroker runs some kind of java (I don't jnow much about java but you see the Sun Microsystems loading screen and the java cup as it launches).
I've never got it to work properly with Safari or any other browser. Can trade on it but a lot of features don't work (eg the yes/no buttons don't show up in dialogue box).
I've downloaded latest version of Java from Apple (though I don't see any java plug-ins in the internet plug-ins folder in my user library?). I always run latest version of Firefox too.
I thought Java was some kind of universal, machine independent thing? Why does it work fine on really old PCs I use at other sites, but not on Macs? I may have to buy a cheap pc laptop just to have full functionality on the broking site.

How do I get Java Applets working on FF4 Mac?

My website's photo upload applet uses Java to upload, and ever since FF4 beta releases, all the way up to the final, I get a missing plugin error. This error is ONLY on FF, it works on chrome and safari.

PS. I'm downgrading till this is fixed. FF4 is useless to me without this ability. I always liked FF for the better upload ability over Safari and Chrome, so I'd love to be able to use it. :-)

How do I get Java 7 working on my machine

I hava a Java app at my work that requires Java 7 to run.
I downloaded and installed the JRE and JDK for 7u40 from Oracle, however when I try to start the app, it still tries to start with Java 6.
If I type java -version, it shows 1.7.0_40, but when I click on the app in the finder, it gets version 6.
Any ideas?

The Oracle JRE is a web plugin only. The JDK is for building standalone apps with Java embedded. Neither one will run packaged Java applications that depend on the built-in Java framework. Apple doesn't distribute a Java 7 runtime. So you're out of luck, if the application really does depend on Java 7. You would have to run it on a non-Apple platform, potentially in a virtual machine.

SInce the install of the most recent Java update (9) for SnowLeopard (10.6.8) Firefox 13 simply advises that there is no plugin installed. The behavior the update indicates will take place (where the web page provides the option to enable the plugin) simply has never presented itself. At this point, java is simply no longer available on a Mac running SNowLeopard and using Firefox. Is there a solution to this other than upgrading to Lion?

Yes. However, do note that FF is only on the machine for testing, I don't use it, preferring Safari. Any further issues with FF are best answered at http://support.mozilla.org/

Based on what you've posted, your computer does not have the right tuner. You need a QAM tuner to record locals from FiOS, or a CableCard tuner to record all local and cable channels from FiOS.

Ok We will start with loading Tiger and iChat version 3.0
From Panther
There are or were serveral Add-ons and applications avaiblable to Panther users of iChat that are not compatible with iChat 3.
These following need to be deleted.
iCAR - An Add-on that posts an Auto response Away message (produces a 1 fps result in a Video chat)
Virex for Panther - An Anti Virus app avialable to @mac account users (Produces the 1 fsp problem)
iChatUSBCam for Panther/iChat2.x - A Add-on utility for using iSight or USB cam with iChat2.x (Incompatible with Tiger/iChat 3)
iProfile - An Add-on for producing a profile on the AIM server that ichat 2.x could not do (not proven to be a problem but now not needed).
A clean install of Tiger (not Archive and Install) produces the best results.
But any install should also check these Tiger settings.
First, UPGRADE to 10.4.3 as this gets past many Connection issues that became apparent with the basic Tiger (10.4) and iChat 3.0 It updates iChat to version 3.1
Check Settings
Don't be complacent that you have not set anything different.
There are several new things in Tiger that may trip you up.
These are worth looking at:
Mac Firewall. Now includes the ability to Block all UDP traffic in the Advanced button (System Preferences > Sharing >Firewall tab then the Advanced Button).
Also can now open UDP protocol for ports where as the Panther one only did TCP (Check any old Panther settings you Added to the presets).
The ports should be:
TCP -5190
UDP -5060, 5190, 5678, 16384-16403
There are more ports for Bonjour 5297, 5298, 5353 UDP and 5298 TCP and Jabber, 5220, 5222, 5223 on TCP)

QuickTime. This has a change in the name of the Connection Speed tab to Streaming (System Preferences > QuickTime) Check this is set to be equal to your connection speed (the download one if this is faster). See Apple Doc 301641 Dated 9th November 2005.
Date & Time. Not conclusively involved but worth eliminating. Set a Network Server and the correct Time Zone.
Apple Remote Desktop. If this is active in System Preferences > Sharing > Services tab it causes problems for iChat.
Next, test the actual speed you are getting from your ISP.

Other Known Problems
There are several other applications that iChat 3 does not seem to like.
folding@home This is a application that uses spare processor time to help find protein chains for a University.
PostgreSQL This is a data base application that can be reset to allow more processor time for iChat. See here http://www.murraywilliams.com/blog/archives/000046.html
Lotus Notes Some people have reported problems with this.
Make sure any Add-on Video cards or input PCI cards have up to date Firmware
IF you are still having problems I would do Routine Maintenance Tasks as laid out here.
Lastly, some routers/modems are SIP aware and give different results in iChat 3 compared to iChat 2.
This is due to the Operating System changing (like a new computer connecting to the modem) rather than iChat.

i think apple needs to keep up with the jones here, so far i read at LOGIC PRO FORUMS many saying cubase and pro tools left logic in the dust, 1 year ago already, sad, but true
