How do I get music and such off of iPod after hard drive crash?

OK, lets say I had to install a new hard drive, or get new computer. I have all this stuff on my iPod... how can I get it into the new iTunes library on new computer?

There are a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve the music files and playlists from your iPod. You'll find that they have varying degrees of functionality and some will transfer movies, videos, photos, podcasts and games as well. Have a look at the web pages and documentation, this is just a small selection of what's available, they are generally quite straightforward. You can read reviews and comparisons of some of them here:

If you have any iTunes Music Store purchases the transfer of purchased content only from the iPod to authorised computers was introduced with iTunes 7. You'll find details in this article: Copying iTunes Store purchases from your iPod or iPhone to a computer
There's also a manual method of copying songs from your iPod to a Mac or PC. The procedure is a bit involved and won't recover playlists but if you're interested it's available on page 2 at this link: Copying Content from your iPod to your Computer - The Definitive Guide
I would also advise that you get yourself an external hard drive and back your stuff up, relying on an iPod as your sole backup is not a good idea and external drives are comparatively inexpensive these days, you can get loads of storage for a reasonable outlay:

  • How do I get my Firefox bookmarks off of my old hard drive (now installed on my new computer as the 2nd hard drive) and into my new installation of Firefox on my new computer?

I had a lovely computer, about 8 years old, running Windows XP; the mother board died; the hard drive was fine.
I now have a new computer, running Windows 7, and I have the old hard drive as my 2nd hard drive.
How do I get my old Firefox bookmarks off the old hard drive and into my new Firefox installation?

You can find your current profile using about:support pasted into the location bar then click on "Open Containing folder. That is where you will want to replace your old files into.
Next find your old profile on your old HD, see
    :https://support.mozilla.com/questions/886839
With Firefox down replace the profile files you decide to replace.

Is there a way to get the music and playlists back off an ipod and back on to your computer with out removing or changing your current itunes music or playlists ?
    Thanks

hi, have you tried a program called ipodAccess or xplay 2 to take out your songs and playlists? xplay has like a 30 day trial but meanwhile you can use it to copy out all your songs.

Once you have the drive connected to your Mac, click System Preferences (gear icon) on the dock
    Click Time Machine
    Click Options
Be default, the hard drive will be Excluded from backups. Click the drive to highlight it, then click the "-" (minus) button at the bottom of the list to remove the drive from Excluded items.
The drive will be backed up on the next Time Machine pass
Everything above assumes that the hard drive has been formatted in Mac OS Extended (Journaled) as Time Machine will only backup drives in that format.

if you follow all 7 steps you can dl a trial here:  http://prodesigntools.com/photoshop-elements-10-direct-download-links-pse-premiere-pre.htm l

if you have a problem dl'g, you didn't follow all 7 steps.  the most common error involves failing to meticulously follow steps 1,2 and/or 3 (which adds a cookie to your system enabling you to download the correct version from adobe.com).

If your iPod is set to update automatically you need to take care connecting to an empty iTunes. You can use a keyboard command to prevent your iPod auto-syncing with iTunes. While connecting the iPod to the computer on Windows with iTunes 7 installed hold down the Control and Alt keys (or Shift + Ctrl keys in older versions). This will stop the iPod from auto-syncing with iTunes and the iPod will appear in the source list. Wait until you are sure the iPod has mounted, and that it will not auto sync and then you can let the keys go. This may take between 20 to 30 seconds depending on your computer: iTunes 7 Keyboard Shortcuts for Windows
Your iPod should appear in the iTunes source list from where you can change the update setting to manual and use your iPod without the risk of accidentally erasing it. Also when using most of the utilities listed below your iPod needs to be enabled for disc use, changing to manual update will do this by default. Check the "manually manage music and videos" box in Summary then press the Apply button: Managing content manually on iPod
Whichever of these retrieval methods you choose, keep your iPod in manual mode until you have reloaded your iTunes and you are happy with your playlists etc then it will be safe to return it auto-sync. I would also advise that you get yourself an external hard drive and back your stuff up, relying on an iPod as your sole backup is not a good idea and external drives are comparatively inexpensive these days, you can get loads of storage for a reasonable outlay.

I recently lost all of my content on iTunes and have been looking for a way to transfer my content from my iPod over to my PC. I have no idea how I can do it, and my iPod is going screwy, so I need to transfer my content before my iPod finally breaks. Help?

  • How do I get a "read" audiobook off my ipod without loosing access to it?

Even with skimming the manuals and searching the discussions, I haven't been able to find out how to take an audiobook off my ipod after it has been read - and replace it with another one that hasn't been read. (I can take them all off - or leave them all on.)
One of the threads I discovered, suggested that I go to the sync devices dropdown and select the book, and hit delete. (It won't "select"); I can however delete it from my library - but don't want to do so as I will probably want to "read" it again later.
Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated,
    Mike
P.S. Please explain any responses in a way that a novice can grasp. (They don't cover ipod's in the AARP magazine lol)

I'm new to this, and didn't realize audio.com was a alturnative. I will look into it. Thanks for the suggestion.
As for the sync only what's checked box . . . that's how I get the all-or-nothing sync. I want to have the "unread" books on my ipod so I can listen to them. I just don't want the "read" books sucking up space.
I think that I will try copying the book file from my "my music" folder into some other place, then deleting the "read" book from my library. I can always inport the folder if I want to "re-read" the book later. Does that make sense?
