How do I get my AVI files to play with Lion

I uploaded my AVI files from my video camera and when I try to plan them with Lion my computer tells me that a required codec isn't available. My photos from the same camera do not have any issue uploading and are able to be viewed. Please help.

AVI is is a frame interleaving container. While the file container is supported by QT, its specific audio and video compression formats may or may not be supported. In addition, it is a very old file type for which official support was dropped more than a decade ago. Since you did not indicate which specific audio and/or video codecs are used by your camera, I can only discuss generalities and not any specifics here. Firstly, the file may contain older "lagacy" audio and video compression formats which may require the QT 7 Player and its older 32-bit QT routines for proper handling. Secondly, if codecs are missing, your best option may be to install the Parian codec component package for use by the QT 7 Player. This package contains codec support for many commonly used AVI audio/video compression format combinations. However, be advised that many AVI codecs whave never be transcoded for use on a Mac or for use with OS X or the Intel based systems. In addition. installing the Perian package may may create codec conflicts with other third-party codecs like DivX, XviD, etc., so be sure to read the Perian support page if you install this software. In any case, once Perian and QT 7 are properly installed on a Lion platform, AVI files using commonly used AVI codec combinations should become playable in the QT 7 Player app.
As previously mentioned, your other options would be to use a third-party multimedia player like VLC which contains its own built-in codecs for playback or use a conversion application like FFmpegX or HandBrake to convert your AVI files into fully compatible QT files.

How do I get Streamclip AVI files that were saved without first installing Quicktime ALternative 1.81 to play in Premiere Elements 11?

I had Hi-8 "home movie" tapes transferred to mp4 files. To pull many short clips from these long files, I used MPEG Streamclip 1.2. The default save for these short clips was mp4. Either they didn't work in Adobe Premiere Elements 11 or I thought they wouldn't -- I can't recall now -- so I saved each clip as AVI. These AVI files won't play at all in Premier Elements. I Googled for advice and found that I needed to convert to Quicktime Alternate 1.81. I fear this had to be done before I saved the clips, but I didn't realize that. Still, I just now uninstalled Quicktime 7 and installed Quicktime 1.81, then tried converting the AVI clips files, first back to MP4 (didn't work at all in PE11) and then to MOV (only played audio). The AVI files play fine in Windows Media Player and VLC. All I have are the original files saved as AVI in Streamclip. Is there any way to get these to play and be editable in Premiere Elements 11? I've attached a jpeg capture of a gspot readout for one of these files. THANKS!

Glad that you finally sorted out what you were doing and discovered DV AVI.
In your particular situation Prism would serve your purposes of generating the DV AVI 4:3 since your footage is 640 x 480. However, for others with different footage, the free Prism shortcoming is that it cannot offer DV AVI widescreen 16:9; whereas MPEG Streamclip can do the job for 16:9 as well as 4:3.
QuickTime Alternative 1.8.1 that does come with the MPEG Streamclip's required MPEG2 Playback Component (free) also meets the Premiere Elements requirement for QuickTime installed on computer with Premiere Elements to work. This works in spite of the fact that QuickTime Alternative 1.8.1 is not the latest version of the regular QuickTIme.
In post 2 of the following older thread, I detail the use of Prism (for 4:3) and MPEG Streamclip (for 4:3 and 16:9) to produce the DV AVI file.

You should convert the media to QuickTime. Without knowing any specifics most likely the simplest way is to use MPEG Streamclip.

How do I get access to files backed up with time machine on another computer?

Hi. I recently migrated to a new macbook air. got most of the data across, but not my iphoto library, which exists now only on an external harddrive onto which i backed it up using time machine.
I had to delete the iphoto library from my old computer before migration.
The harddrive doesnt work on my old computer anymore (says the disk is damaged. Im currently trying to repair it, but no luck so far, disk utility says it cannot repair it.)
I can get the harddrive to work on my new computer.However, the folder i want to access is inside a time machine backup folder (made on my old machine) and it is locked. I tried to unlock it using command+ i but that did not work.
How can i access such a locked folder?

Were you trying to access it via either Setup Assistant or Migration Assistant? If those don't work, you still may be able to use the "Star Wars" display to see and restore some data. It all depends on just what and where the damage is.

Correct; Time Machine protects it's backups with very restrictive ACLs, basically "nobody can do anything," so us mere mortals won't damage them.
If you use the same user account on the same Mac that did the backup, via the Finder, you should have read rights, and you may be able to copy from the backups.

Yes. Each of those date-stamped backup folders should contain a set of "hard links" to the backup copies of everything that was on your system at the time of that backup, no matter when each item was actually backed-up. If you can copy the most recent one successfully, that will get everything.
The iPhoto Library looks like a file; but it's actually a special kind of folder called a "package." If you can't copy it, right-click it and select Show Package Contents to see inside it, but don't copy individual items except as a last resort -- at best, you'll recover raw photos, with no organization or data, and probably no editing, either.

And EasyWMA did not give an error? Suggest you use your Windows machine to make sure the originals really are WMAs and that they play OK in WMP.
If they are protected, see my previous post.
If they are not, you can convert with iTunes on your Windows machine. This is simply a matter of adding them to iTunes on Windows; iTunes will ses that they are WMAs and will create new files in your iTunes-specified import format. (Make sure that is mp3 by setting it in Edit > Preferences > Advanced > Importing.) I believe it will do this without authorizing, but if you have to, just authorize, and deauthorize when you are done. Copy the resulting mp3s to your Mac.

Hey Wacko, welcome to the forum. I had a similer problem with one of my clients GB tracks. It seemed that when I imported them into LP all of the outputs on the tracks switched to bus 11 and used a master fader that didn't show up in the arrange or mixer windows. To fix it switch the tracks to outputs 1&2 and add the master fader so you have control over it's volume. That's what worked for me. I hope it helps you. Good luck.

If all you wan't to do is view the .flv video file and do nothing else to it, video players like VLC and Niceplayer will do the trick. Installing the PERIAN extension to Quicktime will also do the trick.

Lion will only let you add documents to iCloud through iCloud.com, iCloud.com requires the iOS apps before you can use it.
Mountain Lion will let you add documents to iCloud from the iWork apps themselves, you don't then need the iOS apps before they can be opened on another Mac.

2) Yesterday I made the subclips with the In-Out Points and Command-U, the benefit is that I've seen the clip before naming it. Now I'm using markers, it's benefit is that I can write comment and (the later) clip name at once, the drawback is that I have to view to the next shot's beginning before knowing what the shot contains.
But now I found out that I can reconnect my clips independently to the format I converted the master clip to. I reconnected the media to the original AVI file and it worked, too! The more I work with, the more I'm sold on it... - although it doesn't seem to be able to read and use the date information within the DV AVI.
1) Ok, I tried something similar within FCE. Just worked, but the file size still remains. Which codec settings should I use? Is the export to DV in MOV with a quality of 75% acceptable for both file size and quality? Or would be encoding as H.264 with best quality an option for archiving, knowing that I have to convert it back to DV if I (maybe) wan't to use it for editing later? Or anything else?

If they were songs you purchased from itunes, try redownloading them from your purchases...
if that doednt work, make sure the optuon to copy files to itunes media folder is checked in settings, then find and download from the net. and re-add them to your library

I suggest you do the Basic Tutorials ( Adobe TV for example) in both Premiere Pro and PhotoShop.
