How do I get my columns in finder and open/save dialog boxes to stay at the widths I set?

The name column is very very wide when I try to open a file.. so I can't sort by the other columns without dragging over the bar at the bottom of the screen. THis is so so frustrating. I resize but it doesn't stick to the next session.
It is almost as frustrating as the thumbnails being too small in the open dialog box so that I can't see the file I want to open.

Find in Open/Save Dialog boxes

The find in open/save dialog boxes seems to return unexpected results. Say I have two folders one called "Down under" and the other called "Down under 2". If I ask it to find "down" it only returns the file "Down under 2" and other files whose content may have the word "down" in them. The folder "Down under 2" only has jpegs in it. None have "Down" in the file name.
So what gives?

Surely someone knows what is going on in spotlight. If I use Easyfind for the search it comes up with both files folders correctly.

Sort-by-type for column view in open/save dialog boxes?

I've done a fairly good search both on Google and in these forums and can't seem to find this question addressed. When I go to open or save something (in Preview, for example) I prefer to use Column View in the dialog box, since it is easy to see and navigate the folder structure. However, Column View always shows up sorted by name, even if I specified in Finder that the folder be sorted by type. Because of this, I have to scroll down and hunt for subfolders rather than having them conveniently listed at the top.
My question is this: is there a way to get Column View to sort by type in the open/save dialog boxes? (The Command+J that works in regular Finder does nothing in these dialog boxes.)

No. Column view will only sort by name. If you wanted to put a space before each folder name, then they will sort to the top. Sorting by Kind will put folders above files, but it will also put anything else except files at the top. If there are only folders, however, that would put them first in the sort list.

Finder sidebar not updating with applications open/save dialog boxes

Hi all,
I've searched the threads and can't seem to find an answer to this recurring issue that I'm having.
I save folders to current projects in the Finder sidebar. However, I find that when I try to find those sidebar folders from within the open/save dialog applications that it is often times and old version of the sidebar. In the image linked below note the Finder sidebar on the left and the InDesign CS sidebar on the right. The list of folders is different. The version via InDesign seems to be an older cached version.

Try deleting this file: com.apple.sidebarlists.plist
/Users/YourName/Library/Preferences. Drag that file from the Preferences folder to the Trash, empty the Trash and reboot. See if that helps...
Seems to me that Adobe is very picky about where the files are kept on the hard drive. You might not want them in the Sidebar. Whenever you do an Adobe software update, the installer needs the path to where those files go. If it's missing in action, it can wreak havoc.
Make sure when you do Adobe updates, if there is a link included or a Read Me file, check that out first before installing anything.
Run Disk Utility and Repair Disk Permissions BEFORE and AFTER any software updates:
Launch Disk Utility. Select MacintoshHD in the panel on the left, select FirstAid, then click: Repair Disk Permissions. Quit DU when it's finished and reboot.

RW2 preview in finder and "Open file" dialog

Hello,
I run into a curiosity with RW2 file format (from LX3 and FZ38). In Finder, RW2 preview is not displayed and only default icon (black icon with text exec in corner). The same RW2 files does have correct preview, when I browse them in "Open file" dialog window (for example Safari > File > Open File...).
How it is possible the Finder and Open dialog do have different settings? Is it possible to copy these settings?

Open / save dialog boxes - customizing column widths

When i open or save a doc in any of the CS5 apps, for mac, in column view, the left hand column where my projects are listed is too narrow. i see 9-10 characters. can the default width be changed so that this column will always be wider when i open those dialog boxes?

What version of Mac OS X are you running? I just did a test in InDesign CS 5.5 running on Lion (Mac OS X 10.7.3). In Lion, the open dialog window is "sticky". When you drag the column widths in column view, they continue to open that way when you open them again.

How do I get rid of Morgan Multimedia PopUp Trial Period Dialog Box?

In the Organizer view on PSE 6.0, I cannot view any of the video clips that I've recorded. I see a symbol of a broken film strip. When I click on it, I receive an error message dialog box that says "The Trial Period Has Expired!. You can buy the codec online at: www.morgan-multimedia.com."
I have no idea who Morgan is, or why I'm being asked to buy a Codec to view video clips within PSE 6.0. Any ideas on how to fix this? I am not a power user, by the way ...

How do I get adobe pdf to connect and appear back on Microsoft Oulook next to the help button?

Adobe Acrobat 9 is on most of our computers and is connected
to Micrsoft Oulook email because the adobe pdf button is next to the help button in Oulook. For some reason it has disappeared on one of the computers and don't know why and now how do we fix that? Thank you for any help on this.

Could you please check if PDFMaker(s) are supported on the version of Office installed on that m/c? Kindly refer http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/333/333504.html.
If it is a supported version, check if the PDFMaker Add-In is not disabled somehow: Go to HELP > DISABLED ITEMS > Check for the PDFMaker entry, if it is there, enable it > re-launch Outlook.

? How do I get a PDF created @11x17 and saved @ 8.5x11 to print darker so the info is readable?

The info also scales down and even at 1200 dpi is not readable. Tried grey scale, graphics, general office, etc.

Could you please let me know what version of Adobe Reader are you using.
Was the PDF originally created using Acrobat or has been converted from any other format?
You can simply choose @8.5 x 11 size for the PDF under Print dialog box and check.
Also, you might change Print Quality of your file under "File> Print> Properties (Layout)> Advanced" to improve readability of your document.

When I use the Google search box, I would like the search results to open in a new tab instead of the current tab.

It turns out there is an about:config setting just for this purpose. Toggle browser.search.openintab to 'true', and all is well.

I try to open firefox and a window opens that says it's already running and i need to shut the other firefox down and restart my computer, how do i get firefox to work right and open?

This happens everytime i boot up and try to open firefox first thing. It has done this for some time but i never noticed because i was using safari.

How do I get a Timer to update in a user dialog box

I am trying to display timer that would continuously update on a user dialog box (It would start when a button was clicked). What would be the best way to do this?

I'm sorry, I didn't test that idea. Now that I have, I see that the textbox only updates after the ButtonClick callback as completed, so instead of seeing the textbox count up from 1 to 10 in my code, I only see it show 10 after 10 seconds have passed. Before that it does look like DIAdem is hung, but it wasn't in my case.
OK, so that means you need to pop up a new progress dialog. You could create a second dialog defined in that same *.SUD file or create a new *.SUD file with a progress indicator on it, or you could use DIAdem's native non-modal dialog with MsgBoxDisp(). I did test this code

Firefox opens a dialog box when I use the browser, "Checking add-ons for compatibility..." then open the Firefox start page along with my homepage. I do not want the Firefox page when I open the browser. how do I stop this?

Since Firefox updated it checks add-ons every time I open Firefox. The Firefox homepage then opens along with my home page, two tabs. I want the checking to stop. This has not happened before--only with this update.

I am new to Swing technology.I want to open a dialog box while double clicking the child node of a tree.Could anyone please send me some examples.

mouse listener on the tree, see if the click count is 2 and what node it clicked, open the dialog. MouseEvent can give you the click count and x/y coordinate, JTree can tell you what node is at that coordinate.
