since updating to IOS 5, my contact app opens, and I can see names, but I cannot see any of the information that used to be there!! Addresses, emails, phone numbers???!!!! All gone.
How do I get them back?

If you just bought it, you could return it.
Or you could get a microUSB cable and restore the device from iTunes on your computer.

Please try the following…
First check that all your settings are correct, that contact syncing is checked on all devices (system preferences > iCloud on a mac and settings > iCloud on a iPhone, iPad or iPod).
Make sure the contacts you are adding are added to your 'iCloud' group and not an 'On My Mac', 'On My Phone' or other non iCloud group (you can do this by checking in groups), non iCloud contacts will not sync.
If you are sure that everything is set up correctly and your contacts are in the iCloud group, you might try unchecking contact syncing in the iCloud settings, restarting your device and then re-enabling contact syncing.

   My new iPhone 4 is on the way from Verizon, and I too am moving on from the LG Versa (a poor man's iPhone) so I've researched this. I trust you have been using the backup assistant on the LG phone to backup your contacts? If so, and you investigate the app store you will see an app for doing the same task on you new iPhone. Initially it will take you LG contacts you have backed up at Verizon to their new home on the iPhone.
According to user comments there appear to be a couple of issues with the app you need to be aware of:
   1. It will not automatically backup your iPhone, you will need to initiate updates in the future on your own. and
   2. You will see in the comments, that there have been some issues with length of backup when you add lots of contact photos to your list.
   This coupled with the address book sync from your computer should make your list whole, in fact the move to the iPhone will allow me to consolidate my address book with my cell phone contacts. Then once I remove the duplicates all will be right with the world.

You're not signed into iCloud then.
Go to System Preferences>iCloud and sign in, switch on any services you want to use. Your contacts will show up in Contacts and your appointments will be in Calendar. Enter new contacts/events etc in the respective app.
Backup any content currently in Contacts and Calendars.

How do I get my JList selection to Display after changing

Granted there are probably 1,000,000,000 ways to write this code. The intent is to have a list of items that are assigned into catagories and when an item is selected the catagories that the item are in are highlighted in the list. This part works OK, as I change items the catagories change to reflect the current item catagories. I have two buttons to add catagories to items and remove catagories from items. The catagory to add is selected from a JCombo drop down list and then the user clicks the addcat button to add the catagory to the item.
My problem is that the catagories in the JList (that also reside in a JScrollPane) do not show as selected after the list is updated. If I click the addcat button twice then the new catagory is highlighted. I thought that the suggestion in other forum messages to add revalidate and repaint would work so I tried that both at the list and the scrollpane level with no effect.

try and re add them if not go on itunes and back up your phone , if it becomes a really big problem go to the udate screen and hit restore, it will erase all upudates but should fix the problem, let me know if this helps

Right now when someone calls that I have a contact pic set for, it shows as a thumbnail on the right side of the banner (right corner of screen). I want it to come up on the whole screen like I see other iphones do. I was told at first that this happens when I use a pic not taken with my phone, such as an uploaded pic from my pc. This is not the case, the only 2 that I have tried to do were pics taken with the iphone. Can someone help me to get this corrected? I have spent over 2 hours with verizon, they cannot figure it out and I also have a senior technical advisor at Apple trying to figure it out, but I am curious if anyone has come across this with the new 4S and how they fixed it. The senior apple advisor thinks it has something to do with syncing my contacts through itunes or google.

Yes, this is exactly what is causing the problem. Macs cannot write to NTFS formatted drives, only read. You must move the documents to the internal HDD/SSD of the Mac to be able to edit them.
Or, since you say you don't want to move the documents to the internal storage, you'll need to format the external HDD as FAT32.

The Contacts App is indeed included on the iPad. Check other screens as well as in existing folders.
