How do I get my iMac to show on TV? I can connect to Netflick.

I Have the latest update to Apple TV and watch movies on the TV using Netflix.  Occasionally, when scanning the menues on the TV, the iMac turns on to a show I downloaded. How does that happen?, I have to turn the iMac off to keep it from reloading.  I am interested in how to see my computer on the TV using Apple TV. I do not see an Apple TV Icon on the top menu.  Any one know how I can show my computer screen on TV? Not really computer savvy. Any directons on where to get the setup info and how to get the icon on the menu bar is appreciated.
