I've been looking all over the internet for the answer to this but I can't find anything. I know it can be done because my friend did it but she forgot how. Everytime I get a message, any one can go to my lock screen and read it without a passcode so I wasn't sure how to just get a message pop up saying who it's from and not contain all the information in the text.
I've gone to passcode lock and set up a passcode but nothing saying SMS or MMS or anything appears. Only require passcode, simple passcode, voice dial, and erase data options.

select Find My iPhone
It will ask you to login again, I don't know why.
If you setup and enabled Find my iPhone on your iPhone, you will see a map showing exactly where your iPhone is. within a few feet. If your iPhone is powered off, you won't see it.
If you did not setup and enable Find my iPhone on your iPhone, you will see nothing on the map.

Basically i have updated all my operating systems and also update itune 9.2
As i cannot get itunes 10 without OS X 10.5 +
It seems my new iphone 4 does not like this and keeps asking fro software i do not have or is not available to me without purchasing...
Can anyone help here as it seems a bit of a con that i would have to buy newer software for my mac mini when all i use it for is my iphones...

You may have possibly locked the screen rotation on your iphone. To enable this feature again follow the below steps:-
When enabled, the screen rotation lock prevents the iPhone display from rotating between portrait and landscape mode.
While screen rotation lock is enabled, the following occurs:
The rotation lock icon appears in the status bar.
The display will remain in portrait mode regardless of how the iPhone is held.
If your iPhone display does not rotate as expected verify that screen rotation lock is off.
1. Check the status bar for the screen rotation lock icon.
2. If screen rotation lock is on: Double click the home button to bring up the multitasking bar > Swipe right until the last set of icons is displayed in the multitasking bar (will include play/pause and skip buttons) > The furthest left icon looks like a circular arrow - touch this icon to enable or disable rotation lock on the iPhone.
3. If screen rotation lock is off (padlock not visible) and you are still unable to rotate the iPhone display, restart your iPhone: Hold the Sleep/Wake button until "slide to power off" appears, and then slide to power off your device. When it is off, press the Sleep/Wake button to turn it back on.

Your backlight is out, it's a hardware problem and you'd be best served to take it in for an estimate. Or you could purchase an external display and use it as a desktop computer. You'll have to decide if repairing a 6 year old computer is worth it.

Your "other" of 6 GB may include corrupted data or file sytem errors. If after removing the messages there is still >2GB, you will need to restore the phone in iTunes, first using a backup (made after deleting the messages) and if needed as a new iPhone.
