It's an audio player... not a backup device.
If you rely on your iPod as a backup of your music.. then you are misusing the device. It's not intended to be used in this manner. Apple makes it difficult to get music off the iPod as a method to hinder music piracy.

If your phone is set up to back up to your computer via iTunes, it will back up automatically every time you sync it with iTunes. If you tell iTunes not to sync it automatically, you can back it up manually when you plug it in, but it can not be backed up automatically via iTunes without also syncing it.
Why would you NOT want to sync it?
You can set it up to backup to iCloud, which will happen automatically at night when the phone is connected to WiFi and a power source.

I have been trying for countless hours and days to get my iPhone 5c out of recovery mode (black screen no apple logo or anything else) the only reason I know it turns on is because the backlight LCD changes color. I don't know if this matters or not but, I have recently purchased a screen from ebay, it was an original iPhone screen etc. I have replaced it and as i said the screen works fine. that shouldn't have any problem with the actual software malfunctioning to update, but here is the log! Enjoy!

I ran into the problem you have after trying to update to 7.1.2 the phone updated, but got stuck in recovery mode, and none of the reset methods worked. I did some searching and came up with a simple method, and it got me out of the loop.
