How do i get my itunes library from old HDD to link in from the new location on the new HDD
My old HDD died and I had to install a new one. Fortuantely I had recent backup which I transferred to the D drive on my new HDD. I relioaded iTunes but can't figure out how to link the files on the D drive to the newly installed iTunes 10.X
Any help appreciated.

2: Click the keys: cmd+3 to view in Columns-Modus
3: Navigate trough the Columns to:
User/your name/Music/iTunes
4:Select the folder "iTunes" (one click) and click "cmd+C" (Copy)
5:Go to the same folder at the new computer,delete the folder iTunes and
click "cmd+V" (Paste)
6:Go to Trash in the Dock and with right mouse-click empty the Trash.
7: Read "MacOS-X for dummies" ,it´s very userful for new users.

It has always been very basic to always maintain a backup copy of your computer for just such an occasion. Use your backup copy to put everything back.

Time Capsule is for backing up your data. It's not really a solution for live file storage; using it will not reduce the bloat of your boot volume.
If you have a lot of movies, music, etc. in your iTunes Library, that can be a good thing to move to an external drive. Here's how:

Quick answer if you use iTunes' default preferences settings: Copy the entire iTunes folder (and in doing so all its subfolders and files) intact to the other drive. Open iTunes and immediately hold down the Option (alt) key (shift on Windows), then guide it to the new location of the iTunes Library.itl file in the moved iTunes folder.

Well, this is a problem, because the only material you can transfer from your iPhone (using only Apple software) is material you purchased in the iTunes Store.
To do that, plug your iPhone into iTunes, then choose File > Devices > Transfer Purchases from iTunes' menu.
Generally speaking, you should restore your iTunes library from your computer's backup. -

2) connect your device and right-click or control-click it in the iTunes Source list, then choose transfer purchases from the shortcut menu that appears.

Your account is just a user name and password. You can access that to buy content from any computer with itunes, just sign it.
Your library wil only be where your put it. Yo can copy it from one computer to another, or from your backup copy of your computer ot another computer. In some countries you can download some past itunes purchases.

How do I get my iTunes and for that matter iPhoto libraries from my old mac 15" Tetherball iMac running OS 10.4.11 iTunes ver. 9.0.2 to my new iMac running 10.6.2 but also using iTunes ver. 9.0.2? I used the migration assistant, and a firewire cable, to move my "Music" folder to the new mac, but it insisted that I create a new user on the new mac for the data, rather than giving me a choice to move it into my user account. Also, based on some info from The Missing Manual and the Take Control books I created a separate user that is not an Administrator on the computer to be my primary login. When I simply tried to copy the music folder - iTunes failed to open. And because I am not an admin I can't access the new folder to copy it while I am in my non-admin user on the new computer. Did you use Migration Assistant to move all you contents or did you create a new account on the new Mac before transferring?
I had a similar problem when I got my MBP as I created an account on the new Mac at the store to confirm that the MBP was ok. Mistake. I got how home and had loads of issues so I ended up reinstalling the system on the new MBP and using Migration Assistant to move ALL my stuff from the old to the new.
Another choice is to clone your old Mac to an ext HD then swap that cloned HD with the HD in your new Mac.
Regardless of which way you go make sure you de-authorize your old Mac before getting rid of it.

Brand new Mac user--this is my second day. Have had an iPod Nano for about 8 months and want to move my iTunes Library to the new Mac and de-authorize (is that the right word?) the iTunes library on old PC once I pull everything off of it--it's going to be wiped and given to a charity!
The songs on the iTunes library and the songs on iPod not all the same--there is only a subset of songs from the library on the iPod. Suggestions?You basically just have to transfer the iTunes folder from the PC to the Mac.

Or you can use file sharing if the Mac and PC are both connected to a network.
