How Do I Get My Library Back!?

My computer crashed recently and I hadn't backed up my iTunes Library. I can transfer purchases but unfortunately, I can't back anything up from the iPod Nano.Is there any way I can get the music off the iPod so I can format the compouter and start again without the hassle of downloading over 100 songs again?

The transfer of non iTMS content such as songs imported from CD is designed by default to be one way from iTunes to iPod. However there is a manual method of accessing the iPod's hard drive and copying songs back to iTunes on Windows. The procedure is a bit involved and it won't recover playlists but if you're interested it's posted in this thread: MacMuse - iPod to iTunes
If you prefer something more automated then there are a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve the music files and playlists from your iPod. This is just a selection, you'll find that they have varying degrees of functionality and some will transfer movies, videos, photos and games as well. Have a look at the web pages and documentation, they are generally quite straightforward. You can also read reviews of some of them here: Wired News - Rescue Your Stranded Tunes
YamiPod Mac and Windows Versions
iGadget Windows Only
iPod Access Mac and Windows Versions
PodUtil Mac and Windows Versions
iPodCopy Mac and Windows Versions
TuneJack Windows Only
CopyPod Windows Only
Whichever of these retrieval methods you choose, keep your iPod in manual mode until you have reloaded your iTunes and you are happy with your playlists etc then it will be safe to return it auto-sync. I would also advise that you get yourself an external hard drive and back your stuff up in case you have problems again. External drives are comparatively inexpensive these days and you can get loads of storage for a reasonable outlay.

See Recover your iTunes library from your iPod or iOS device. Even if you don't have such a device there are links in the article that will show how to recover your purchases.
In addition, the laptop may have drowned but the hard drive is probably fine. You should be able to find someone who can extract the drive from the laptop and recover your personal data from it.

  • When I backed up files on my external drive, I inadvertently dragged my itunes library there. Now I can only play songs on my laptop when my external drive is plugged in. How do I get the library back to my computer

When I was backing up files from my computer to my external drive, I inadvertently dragged my itunes library to the external drive. Now I can only play my library when my external drive is plugged into my computer. How do I get the library location changed back to my computer?

Your drive was used with a PC and formatted NTFS which is proprietary Microsoft format.
You need to install a third party program that will read the NTFS format.
There is various software from PARAGON, Tuxera and NTFS-3G
When you get the data off and have verified it to be good, reformat the drive either HFS+ for Mac use only, or for Mac and PC use then MSDOS (FAT32) for under 4GB files (best) or exFAT (for larger than 4GB files) is proprietary and Microsoft is appling for a patent, which would likely mean OS X won't be allowed to read it anymore without a licensing fee and you'l have to pay another third party software company to read the format, just like NTFS is.
The less you have to rely upon third party sources to read your drives the better, this way if you have a issue and need to read the drive on another machine you don't need the software, and a internet connection and a credit card and...and...and...

  • I have lost my iTunes library. How can I get my library back?

My iTunes library was stored on an external hard drive. Given that the MTBF of these drives is probably measured in months, I realize this was a bad decision on my part; nonetheless, it happened. How to I get my library returned to me?

What happened? The drive failed? If you do not have the music backed up some where else, and the drive cannot be accessed there isn't anything for you to do. You'll simply have to re-download what purchased music is available from iTunes and/or re-rip any CDs.

  • Transferring files over from the hard drive of a previous computer. How can I get my library back?

A couple weeks ago, my old, old laptop finally breathed its last breath and shut off suddenly while I was using it. Various parts of it were broken anyway so I got a new one rather than try to figure out what was wrong with it. All of my files were totally undamaged since it wasn't a hard drive issue, so I just got one of those enclosure things where you unscrew your old hard drive, stick it into the enclosure, plug it into your new computer with a USB cord, and then can drag all your old files onto the new computer.
I could get all my old music back this way by dragging those folders, but if I want to get my library back -- specifically, my playlists, and ideally my info on play counts/date added/etc -- is there a way that I can do that? Is there some "Library" file, series of files, or folder that I can drag onto my new laptop in order to get those things back without having to recreate all my playlists and lose my play info?
Have been running Windows 7 on both my old and current laptop, and was using iTunes version 10.7.0.21, if that information is necessary. Can give you whatever other info you'd need. Thanks!

    1. By default, it will be in the same folder as the iTunes Music or iTunes Media folder. If you don't find it, search the computer for items with that name.
    2. Wherever you want.

  • How do I get my library back after a PC re-build

Had problems with my profile so had to re-build my machine. I now have nothing in my Purchased list. Is it possible to get the library back?

This is one of the many reasons that always maintaining a backup copy is basic.
Use your backup copy to put everything back.
If for some reason you have failed to do so ( not good), then you can transfer itunes purchases from an ipod:
    File>Transfer Purchases
When you buy from itunes you get one download only. it is your responsibility to backup your music, and all other info/data/pics/docs/etc.

  • My computer recently crashed.  I had everything on an externa drive.  I'm trying to reload my music into itunes from my external drive.  I do not have an itunes library document for some reason.  How do I get my library back onto itunes?

I'm trying to figure out how to access my music library from my external drive.  I do not have a media library document and believe that I would have to create one based on the music that is on my external drive.  Can someone help?

If you're running Windows 8.1, this seems to be a common theme, or some variation there of at least. Myself, I can't even back-up on my iPhone 4S which has iOS 7.1.2 and I'm running iTunes 11.3.0.54 and have resorted to purchased the iTunes Match service to ensure that music on my primary desktop PC (which is paired to my iPhone) will be available on both the iPhone and my Windows 8.1 laptop. Regarding backing up of the iPhone, I'm thinking about going to a third party solution until either Apple and/or Microsoft can figure out why Windows 8.1 is having so many problems with the current version of iTunes (as of this writing 11.3.0.54).

  • I just installed itunes on my laptop, my other one died. How do i get my library back?

just bought a new computer how do i get my libray music, video, ect.. back on itunes. other computer died.

Depending upon what country that you are in you might be able to re-download your iTunes music purchases and tv shows and, if you are in the US, some/all of your films : re-downloading. Have you not got a backup of your content on, for example, an external drive that you can copy onto the computer and add into its iTunes ?

  • How do I get my library back on Encore CS5?

I have used the library on Adobe CS5 from new and now it is missing. How do I have it recovered back to author my DVDs. I have researched the Adobe help but not successfully. Brian Anderson.

For CS5, if you installed from disk, the library should have installed. If by download, it was a separate download
In either event if you don't have it, you can download the current version, and just put it in the CS5 library location.

  • How do I get my library back if it's been deleted?

My iPhoto library has disappeared and I have no back up.
When I started iPhoto it said I didn't have a library and gave me two options to 'create library' or 'find library'
Tried looking for Library6 using Find Any File, but it won't open and is not big enough to be my full library. Help! I don't think iPhoto has been updated lately, but iTunes has.
    It's a MAC OS X 10.6.8
    iPhoto 8.1.2

Thank you for your response. I did not delete it myself, but it has disappeared and cannot be found anywhere. I'm not sure if it happened after an update and is similar to problems other people have had. I found this in one of the other discussions, but I don't want to harm the mac more. Do you think it is wise to do this? I did the find and found an alias HD file. What is it?

This worked for me, after an idea presented here:
    http://www.fatcatsoftware.com/iplm/Help/disappearing%20iphoto%20libraries%20on%2 0external%20drives.html
    if you do a
    Finder> Go> Go to Folder
enter /Volumes in the search box
    Click Go
You should get a list of Volumes the machine knows about.
I deleted the Macintosh HD alias file listed, and magically iPhoto Library reappeared and iPhoto worked normally.
    YMMV

  • How do i get my library back after setting up seperate users in vista

Hello all.  After much frustration, I have decided to turn to my piers for help. (I tried to go thru apple support but they wanted to charge me)   I have three devices that sync to my computer - my iphone, and two itouch's that belong to my daughers.  I decided that it would be a great idea to set up seperate user accounts on my computer so that our information wouldn't get messed up i.e. my contacts and calendar appointments end up on my daughers ipod.  (The one ipod was mine that i gave my daughter when i got my iphone so it was still trying to sync with my stuff even though i erased it and synced to her library.  whole other story.)  They have each had their own library that we switch when we sync.  When i set up the seperate user accounts their libraries disappeared!  I have tried moving the .itl file and the .xml file to the public folder (and many other locations) and changing itunes media location in itunes but i get nothing.  When i try to just click and open those files, they come up empty.  where did it all go? Could it be because this is a first generation itouch running iOS 3.1.3?  I have not tried my other daughters new ipod because she would freak if i messed up all her stuff.   I have not been able to sync their devices since I created the seperate user accounts because I'm afraid they will lose everything.  I apologize because i know just enough to be dangerous and i hope i have not messed things up totally.  Is there any hope that i will be able to retrieve their libraries - wherever they went?  thank you in advance for you help and patience.
