How do I get my library to sync to a new phone?

I recently upgraded to the iphone 5, and have been unable to sync my library to it. Any ideas?

I actually pulled all my data from my old hard drive over to my new computer. The itunes account was all there but just no playlists. Even the purchased music is there but mixed in. I just do not want to resort all the music.

Make sure your new computer is authorized in iTunes. Disable autosync in itunes, connect your ipod, right click on it in the device list and choose backup.

Transfer your purchases the same way to copy all apps and bought media from the Store to your computer.
Set up at least one contact and event on your computer to be able the merge your calendars and contacts after your ipod got wiped during the first sync.
The rest of the data can be restored from the backup you made.

As mentioned by vazandrew, music is one way only, from the computer to your device, unless you bought the songs in itunes and transferred your purchases.

Thank you for your help. I am still having trouble. As you can tell, I am not technologically advanced AT ALL. My music is all showing up in the library but when I go to file in the top left corner, Sync is greyed out and I cannot select it. I'm gonna continue to try this. Did you choose the wrong back up? There should be a drop box when you go to "Restore from Back up" in iTunes and your iPhone is plugged in, on the Summary page. Choose the correct back up. If you can't find one, and you still have your device, back up your iPhone 4 again and then choose that back up. Or check for an old iCloud back up if you have one.

Are you saying your iTunes doesn not have your songs? If not, where would they be? If on an older iphone, then they should have gotten there via itunes and itunes has them.

I understand that you are wanting to restore your new iPhone 6 from an iPhone 5 backup. This sounds like the iOS version of your old iPhone 5 may be newer than what was installed on your iPhone 6. Try going through the steps in the article below.

I would also check to see the backup dates in iTunes and if the backup is located on iCloud instead of iTunes.

You erase them by syncing with iTunes. Instructions below quoted from iTunes: Syncing photos - Apple Support
To delete synced photos and videos from your device
In iTunes, click the Device button in the upper right corner. (If viewing the iTunes Store, click the Library button in the upper-right corner first.)
Click the Photos tab in the resulting window.
Choose "Selected albums" and deselect the albums or collections you want to delete.
Note: To delete all synced photos, deselect "Sync Photos from" and, when asked, click "Remove photos."
Click Apply.

I just decommissioned my windows pc for a mac power book. How can I get my ipad to sync with the new computer without erasing all the apps and data on the ipad?

I just decomissioned my windows pc in favor of a new (to me) MacBook Pro. When I attempt to sync my iPad I get a warning that I will erase all content on the ipad in order to sync with the new computer. How do avoid erasing all the data on the iPad, and get the iPad and the new Mac/iTunes to be friends?

Best option is to use Windows Migration Assistant as Ralph noted.

Or if you only want iTunes (Migration Assistant let's you choose) copy the entire /Music/iTunes/ folder from your PC to /Music/ on the Mac.
FYI: A MacBook is not a PowerBook. PowerBooks were discontinued in 2005.

Lucky you, a dead iPhone and a dead computer! If you were backing up your old computer to an external drive then you might be able to recover your backup file. But if you don't have a backup of your old computer then you're outta luck, iTunes itself does not contain the backup file.
If you have a backup of your old computer's hard drive, your iPhone's backup file would be located at:
Mac: ~/Library/Application Support/MobileSync/Backup/
Windows XP: \Documents and Settings\(username)\Application Data\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup\
Windows Vista or 7: \Users\(username)\AppData\Roaming\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup\
You would then put the iPhone backup file into the same location on the new computer, then restore the iPhone and select this backup.
