How do I get my mouse to zoom?

I have tried to get my mouse to zoom by turning it on in preferences, but it doesn't seem to work. Any suggestions.

Don't think you can zoom using the mouse, but if you go to Universal Accsess in system preferences you can zoom in using the key commands.

Bit of a verbose answer but I have included a lot of useful information for you which as a newcommer to Macs you will find useful. Make a note of the webpages as you may need to refer to them in the future.
To find any downloads normally if you look at the top of this screen you will see "Downloads" click on that and you will see all those available - but make sure you get the right ones for the Intel. If you click on the description it will take you to an information page for that particular download where you can also download the update.
The Combo update is a complete overwrite of the system files if you want more details use the HELP in FINDER and enter "update" at the bottom of the page is a section called Support Articles look at the one called
About the Mac OS X 10.4.8 Update (combo)
When you use Software Update it updates using the Delta version i:e updates just the files changed from the previous release currently on your machine 10.4.6 to 10.4.7 etc. that is why you need to check again after Software Update completes to ensure you get a complete update with the latest apps etc
Using the Combo ensures all files for the OS are updated and can therefore clear out little wrinkles that can appear from time to time as the machine is used
Not all Firmware is updated by Software Update which is why you sometimes get a message saying you need a firmware update even though you have just used Software Update. They need to be checked separately see

If you are using Safari - open Preferences and in "General"
"Save downloaded files to:" "Desktop"
Uncheck "Open safe files after downloading"
Close preferences
When download finishes open the image (double click) and follow the instructions it will install the system files.
Just leave it to do its job

if you are using a magic mouse, disable the side to side gesture. >system preferences>mouse>more gestures>uncheck swipe between pages.

Got confused between your header question about a wired mouse and the main question about a wireless mouse. You said your magic mouse was frozen and added you do not have a wireless mouse. Problem is ... the magic mouse is wireless. The original mighty mouse was the corded version.
The wired mouse is a regular problem. After two to three years it tends to clog up. You can clean it (to a degree) as follows.
Using an alcohol moistened, not wet, cotton bud, scratch at the mouse ball for a minute or so. Then turn it upside down and on a clean piece of thick white paper or card on a firm surface, vigorously rub the mouse ball on the paper in a regular figure of eight. Do this for a minute or so and occasionally tap the mouse on the paper. This will help dislodge bits of fluff etc. Then try again

If its a USB based mouse, try unplugging the mouse and plugging it back in.
If it's a wireless RF mouse, make sure the RF dongle is properly plugged into the USB port. Make sure the mouse is powered on.
If it is a bluetooth mouse, make sure it is properly paired with your Mac (you may need another mouse temporarly to check on this).
And for any wireless mouse, be sure and try clicking the mouse a few times, many have mouse sleep routines to preserve the mouses battery life.

I'm actually trying to get my mouse to do what you're complaining about. My search led me to your post, LOL.
I have a programmable logitech and I can't seem to find an option to assign the scroll functionality. I can change what happens when I click the scroll wheel, but not what happens when I scroll it up or down.
To help you:
1. If you have a programmable mouse, try digging in the software for that mouse.
2. If not try looking in Windows mouse settings.
If I find how to make it work on my mouse I'll try to remember and come tell you how to undo it.

How do you get a "mouse over" event of a line drawn on a picture?

I am using the "draw multiple lines" vi and want to be able to select a line using the mouse. From the picture properties I can tell when the mouse is over the picture, but not when the mouse is over a line drawn on the picture.

I think you would have to keep a side database of each object that is selectable and select them from a list. If you look inside some of the picture control functions you will see that it is an array of drawing commands. You don't have access to the z-buffer, so you don't know what pixels were set by their Brenshaw but the z-buffer is the array of drawing commands. If you want to change things that are already laid down then it would have to be more like how visio cycles through the components of groups when you click where each click brings up the control points of the component parts.

How do I get infinite bars when zooming in on piano roll?

When zooming in on the piano roll, the bars stop at 128th notes or something. I can add smaller values of notes, but then theres no grid to make the input accurate. Is there a setting or button within the piano roll Im missing?

No, there isn't.
You could use the "Quantise Time" option on the track or use a groove track to align your notes automatically.

How can I get transparency on a Zoom?

I'm trying to use the Zoom Area tool to to move an image from one area of the screen to another. If I insert a transparent GIF or PNG as a static image, the image is legitimately transparent. When I select that same image for the zoom, it ignores the transparency and adds a solid background. Does anyone know of a good way to retain the images transparent background? File format? Nifty trick in Captivate?

Hi there
Sorry, but I don't believe this is possible to achieve. If so, I've never seen it. You might be able to accomplish it by creating a widget or gizmo in Flash that moves the image, then drop that into Captivate. But that's about the only way I can fathom it would happen.
You should also consider reporting it as a desired feature. I'm not sure I'd classify it as a bug, but it may be.
