How do I get my new ipod to be recognized by my PC so it will charge, etc.?

It won't charge or even come up as recognized on either my laptop (Vista OS) or my PC (XP Pro OS) even though I've dowloaded and installed the appropriate itunes software. The "Chatty" person at Apple.com said that's what I needed to do but it hasn't provided any relief. Any suggestions?

I recently purchased a new iPod--I think it's the "Shuffle," whichever one retails for $150. When I plugged it into my iMac, it said I needed to install iTunes 10 to run it. When I checked for updates, it said that iTunes 9.xyz (whatever came after the 9) was the latest version.
How do I get this new iPod to work. As you can tell, I am not much of a gadget junkie, and I'm a bit of a technology incompetent, which is why I purchased the Mac to begin with. I have an iMac, have no idea what operating system I am using--whatever came with it when I purchased it in November, 2008.

How do I get a new iPod Touch to have the same music setup as my old one?

I have all the songs on my ipod touch in my itunes library, but there are also a lot of other songs I don't want, so I can't just sync the new ipod. I could drag them all individually but that would take hours.
I was thinking I could get an ipod-to-itunes music program, and then just do my whole ipod, then transfer all of those songs to my new ipod, then delete the songs I had imported to itunes. But that's expensive.

I got an itouch for christmas yesterday, however whenever I connected it to my laptop (compaq windows) it wouldn't show up on my itunes sidebar like it should. So then I decided to download the latest version of itunes, i did that, then i downloaded icloud, (i still don't know how to create an account for that either) Anyways, ever since I opened it and connected it has had the same picture, I think it's in recovery mode but I'm not sure. IPod is not recognized by my computer, but it will charge

I looked through the forums but everyone seems to have trouble connecting their iPod AND charging it. I can plug mine into my iMac and it starts charging, but it does not show up as a disk or in iTunes. This is a brand new iPod (my last one iPod's HD died). The only thing I can think is that maybe it is the firewire cord, because someone said different pins are used for charging and transferring data. I've tried all the steps that Apple says, but I can't restore obviously.

As mentioned in this article, reinstalling iTunes will not delete your music and apps, but backing up is always a good idea.

Do other devices now connect?

I have been trying to get the ipod touch (4th gen.) to work. I tried loading itunes v. 10.5 on my windows 7 but I kept getting an error message. After searching for answers, I found someone that told me to use v. 9.0 of itunes 64. I finally got itunes to work and registered my ipod. Later, I tried to upgrade to v. 10.5 but neither itunes nor quicktime would work right, so I ended up reinstalling the v. 9.0. The problem is that the computer shows the ipod under devices, but it is not coming up in the itunes menu under devices. When I ran the diagnostics (under help) it is telling me that there is no ipod. Is this a defective device? When I turn it on the only thing I get is the apple symbol. I'm totally confused.

You did install the latest iTunes (10.5) right? If the problem was that iTunes does not see the iPod try:
