How do I get my old songs back after iTunes deleted them?

iTunes deleted the previous songs I had on my iPod when purchasing some new songs. Why the **** is this? Did I press the wrong button? I did everything it told me to do, and now i only have the songs I recently purchased. I freaking hate this.

Right click in windows. Control click on Mac. On the phone in iTunes. Choose "transfer purchases"

You should copy everything from your old computer or your backup copy of your old computer to your new one.

I had over 1500 songs in my iTunes library. They were visible on my iPhone, iPad, and iPod AND my PC. All my songs are intact on my devices but I only have 181 songs on my PC. The sort fields should generally be empty unless you've putting in custom values to sort solo artists by their surnames. You can apply common changes to thousands of tracks at once, just don't apply the wrong change because there is no undo.
It is a good idea to backup before undertaking large scale changes. See this backup tip for a suggested approach.

Do I use iCloud or HomeSharing?

That depends on where the songs are. If they are on your computer, you can sync them with iTunes.
Connect the iPad to your computer with the cable
Launch iTunes
Click on the iPad name on the left under "Devices"
Click on the Music Tab in iTunes on the right
Click on all of the artists, or playlists that you want to sync - or choose the "Entire Library" option
Make sure that the Sync Music heading is checked
Click on Apply or Sync in the lower right corner of iTunes
I don't use iTunes Match, (the cloud), but this should explain it to you.

The following error i appears " The song “ -------------- ” could not be used because the original file could not be found. Would you like to locate it?". It appears on about 40% of my tracks. No problem before the update.

You should always make a bootable backup BEFORE you do major updates.
If things go wrong you can always revert to what you had previously.
You can do this with Carbon Copy Cloner or Super Duper. (I use CCC for a long time, and I'm very satisfied about it, I can recommend it)
It used to be donation ware, but now you need to pay a small fee. Not a big price for always knowing you're safely backed up.

didn't need it myself since I waited to update, I always check this forums first to find out what are the issues/bugs. When there seems to be none or little problems, I update. I've learned my lesson long time ago. Patience is a good thing...
So, always backup. More important than your changing underwear daily. Time machine isn't enough. Make two bootable clones. One at your place and one at a different location (theft, fire, ...), you can always revert from there.

Likely, because you are now using a different Apple ID and iTunes account. Return to using your old Apple ID and authorize only after you have de-authorized your old computer.
You can de-authorize individual computers, but only by using those computers. The only other option is to "de-authorize all" from your iTunes account.
1. Open iTunes on a computer
2. From the Store menu, select "View my Account..."
3. Sign in with your Apple ID and password.
4. Under "Computer Authorizations" select "De-authorize All".
5. Authorize each computer you still have, as you may require.
You may only do this once per year.
After you "de-authorize all" your authorized computers, re-authorize each one as required.
If you have de-authorized all computers and need to do it again, but your year has not elapsed, then contact: Apple - Support - iTunes - Contact Us.

You can't copy directly from one iPod to another. If the songs aren't in iTunes you need to copy them back from your old iPod and update the new one from there.
