How do I get my Time Machine to appear as a disk in the Finder (wireless) and where do I find the place to assign TM ports to a NAS (Pogoplug v.4). Runnig 10.7 Lion on iMac. Thanks

I am trying to set up Pogoplug Series4 as a NAS attached to my Time Machine router. The TM does not appear as a drive in the Finder and I cannot locate it to assign ports to the PP device. Running 10.7 on an iMac. Time Machine and Time Capsule work fine for backup and internet, I just cannot find it.
Thanks, Ken

After I posted the question, I finally figured out that I needed to open the necessary ports to allow the Pogoplug website to communicate  with my computer. After navigating to the proper area (in Airport Utility) and authorizing  the ports, it seems to work. The Pogoplug device is neither as easy, intuitive or plug-and-play is it claims to be. We will see if it was worth the effort.
Podini's Time Machine FAQ's is a good resource, however. Thanks for sharing.

How can I get my time machine to allow me to recover files again?
After upgrading MBA to OS X, the time machine still backs up the files; but, I'm not able to navigate within the time machine or select any folders or files for restore.
I've searched and can not find a solution to the problem that's being encountered.

Yeap that all makes sense now.
Do you only have the current backup showing in the TM display?? Won't it fill in the rest?
Over wireless are you waiting for the indexing to finish.. ??
Previous backup may not show for a couple of hours.
Long short of it.. Mavericks version of TM is a pain.
Sometimes it is easier to completely ignore the TM backup and do the restore manually.
I have posted the details here. See if this helps.

  • How can I get my Time Machine to recognize restored backup?

I had Time Machine backing up to a Maxtor disk for two years.  Then the disk stopped working properly and was no longer accessable nor did its icon show up on the screen.  With the help of Data Rescue II, I fortunately was able to access the disk and restore my time machine backup files to a newer external disk drive.
But when I try to select the new disk and run time machine, time machine wants to start a whole new backup and won't recognize the old set of backup files.  The old backup files appear to be perfectly restored so I don't know why the Time Machine program is not recognizing them.  Can anyone help?

They may look normal, but if Time Machine doesn't recognize them, they aren't.
Time Machine backups aren't like what you're used to. See the Hard Links section of How Time Machine works its Magic.
Unless everything was copied exactly, and the hard links re-connected to the files on the new drive, the result is not usuable by Time Machine.
Your best bet is to let Time Machine start fresh on a different, empty drive;  keep the recoverd one "on the shelf" for a while.  If necessary, you should be able to drag & drop anything you need from it to your internal HD.

  • How do I get my Time Capsule to appear in Disk Utility so I can repair it as instructed by Time Machine do to?

Time Machine twice reported it couldn't complete the backup to Time Capsule, and I should do a Repair Permission on Time Capsule. Unfortunately, it fails to appear in Disk Utility - only the iMac hard drive appears. What do I do?

I found this same question in the archives. I followed the instructions to click on New Image, but there is no Shared item on the left as suggested, so don't know what to do next. Cannot understand why Time Capsule fails to appear when it is plugged into the iMac!

  • How can I get my Time Machine to Quit Failing?

I've got a MacBook Pro running Mavericks 10.9.2, and I'm hooked up to two 27" external thunderbolt displays daisy chained together when I'm at work. On one of the monitors I've got a hard drive attached via USB that is my time machine backup. The amazing glory of having to only plug in the one thunderbolt cable plus a power connection is severly dimished by the fact that most of the time when I unplug my thunderbolt monitors my time machine hard drive gets corrupted. Which then I have to wipe the drive, and rebackup my entire hard drive. The issue can't be resolved from repairing the disk in disk utility. All because I didnt eject the drive before unhooking. It's 2014 for christs sake, why is this an issue at all?
I need suggestions on how to get it so that I dont have to eject the drive before unhooking the thunderbolt monitors. This is super frustrating, and I'm at my wits end. I've thought about creating an apple script to automatically eject the drive about the time I usually unhook my laptop from the monitors, but I can't anticipate last minute meetings, or days when I leave early/late. Maybe I need to look at another backup option? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

  • How do I Restore from Time Machine after I have reinstalled my system software (Snow Leopard and then Lion) ?, How do I Restore from Time Machine after I have reinstalled my system software (Snow Leopard and then Lion) ?

I have never done this before, so can someone explain in detail how I reintall my system software and then restore from Time Machine please ?

Your profile indicates that you currently have an older version of Snow Leopard (10.6.2).  In order to install Lion, a prerequisite is the latest version of Snow Leopard (10.6.8).  Perhaps a few more details would be helpfull in solving your problem. ex. If all you want to do is to upgrade to Lion, a restoration of data is unneccessary.  Download the latest version of Snow Leopard and then download (purchase) and install Lion.  User data will remain intact.
If I am missing something, please elaborate.
    Ciao.

  • HOW DO I GET A TIME MACHINE BACKUP OUT OF TRASH ???

I know this sounds like a really stupid question because to get things out of trash you just grab them and move them like you do with all the icons. BUT..... I accidentally put a vital  time machine backup in the trash and then  tried to move it back to the external disc and it wanted to go through the rigmarole of 'copying' which doesn't normally happen when you move things out of the trash.
Although I thought that was strange I thought it wouldn't matter if it was copied but what happened was it kept on saying it was 'preparing' the huge number of items and that number kept kept on climbing to 12 million before I stopped it. It should have been no more than about two million for the entire hard disc.
I tried this in several different ways but it did the same thing all the time, keeping the icon in the  trash and saying it was copying but not actually doing it.
There must be a way of getting the thing out of trash and I need it because it has a year old backup on it I urgently need.
This really is a failure of the time machine software writers to write sensible software. Can anyone tell me how to sort this ?? ( if anyone is still  left actually using this wrecked forums that is !)

You cannot just drag a Time Machine backup out of the Trash. It will always copy itself from the Trash to the location you chose to drag it to. What it won't do is copy itself back to where it was on the backup drive. The issue you have is not the fault of the authors of Time Machine. It's the fault of the user by trying to dump a Time Machine backup by putting it in the Trash instead of using the Time Machine application.

  • How can I get my Time Machine to recognize my new Time Capsule?

I have a new Time Capsule and in the initial setup I accidently clicked on the option for not using it with time machine. How do I set it up for time machine backup? Right now the wireless function as router works but time machine does not recognize the Time Capsule for back up.

welcome to the discussion area, Bob !
go system preferences > time machine > change disk. re-select the TM's volume and click +use for backups+.

  • How can I tell if time machine is actually backing up properly when the calculation of estimated time left is incorrect.

I have recently bought a reburbished iMac ( installed with Mountain Lion) and successfully transferred the content of my old imac ( snow leopard) using migration assistant. This onlt took an 1.5 hours.
I have noe connected up an external USB drive and started a time machine back up to back up 200GB of content.  It has been running for 12 hours and says 4.63 GB of 200 has been done. Now I know that this calculation is not reliable and USB can get choked but how do I know if the process is actually running ok and how long to wait before giving up. The time machine icon is moving around.
Please please any help would be appeciated - I want to get using my new Mac.
    thanks

  • TIME MACHINE ON MORE THAN ONE DISK KEEPING THE OLD DISK

If the HD used for TM becomes full I would like to install a new one bigger and stert it over. I see one could clone the previous HD to have acces to previous BU but I would prefer to keep the old disk for few months untill I am sure I will not need anithing older and in the time TM has built up a new BU.
To be more clear: mi present TM Disk goues back to May 2008 and is 320GB. I remove it and use a new HD 500GB which will start to keep my BU from now. Will it be possible to disconnect the nes HD and connect gain the old if I wish to find something dated from May to today ??

    Yes,
it will be possible. Just plug the old 320GB HD, you won't even need to unplug the new 500GB one, then right-click the Time Machine Dock icon and choose "browse other Time Machine disks", then you may choose the old 320GB one and restore anything you need from it.
You can then change back to the 500GB or to any other newer one too, as you wish.

  • How can I get real time updates in multiple views when scrubbing through the timeline?

I am using After Effects CS 5.5 on Windows 7. When I use the mouse to click / drag / scroll through the timeline, one view updates in real time, this is great! If I open a second view, it only updates that view when I finish scrolling.
I would like to be able to scroll back and forth through the timeline, and have two different compositions update in real time (live update)?
    Is this possible?
    Thank you!

The long answer is: No. It's not even a performance issue, it's how AE evaluates time, since time is fluid and can be mangled in a million ways from time-remapping to expressions...

  • How can I get real-time audio (think Bloom from Brian Eno out of my ipad and into garageband on my mbp?

I'm a visual artist and an audio novice who would like capture some spontaneous Bloom or Scape musical noodlings. Since neither Bloom nor Scape allow users to save to a universal audio format, I'm hoping that there's a way for me to get those noodlings out of my iPad and into GrageBand on my MBP

See Recover your iTunes library from your iPod or iOS device.
While I agree that it would be nice if it was easier to transfer media from your Apple devices they should never be used as the sole location for any of your media. They are too easily lost, stolen, damaged, or corrupted. The user tip above also includes a link to a suggested library backup strategy so that you can avoid being in the same position in future.

  • How to repair a corrupt Time Machine Backup

I have been Googling & searching also here in the support community about how delicate Time Machine is.  I think I've broken so many Time Machine "don'ts" that I NOW know what I did and where I need to do things differently.  Moving forward.
I have a Time Machine backup on an external HD.  I have also recently re-installed Mountain Lion and now need to restore my files from Time Machine.
This is where the problem starts.  Time Machine won't restore, and when I (yes, I NOW know it's a no-no, please hold your foul comments) go into the Backups.backupdb folder manually, all the folders are now shortcuts, and they lead no where.
I have tried to no avail:
To repair permissions with Disk Utility
To repair the drive with DiskWarrior
Does anyone have any (constructive) suggestions?  This backup contains the usual personal documents & photos that we can all agree are most important, but also I have stuff pertaining to legal matters that I can not lose under any circumstances.  Having invested $99.95 on DiskWarrior just really burns me up at this point because that was the recommended fix for this problem.
Any advice or assistance I can get from anyone would be deeply appreciated!

When I go into the "star wars" Time Machine screen, all the backups are blank & black.  My Backups.backupdb folder has gone from 483Gig, to 4.72TB on a 2TB drive.  When I use the finder to manually look in the Backups.backupdb folder, all the folders inside are alias' and when I double-click them, they say that the alias is broken, do I want to delete it or fix it.
I know that all the Backups.backupdb is just a database that links to the files stored on the hard drive, and I need a utility that will repair the links to each file.  If no one has something that does this, perhaps this is a great opportunity for someone to create such a utility.
I'm going to try using Data Rescue to just restore the drive completely and pick through it manually.
