How Do I get My USB backup drive to wake after iMac wakes from sleep?

I backup using Time Machine to a USB portable drive.
When my iMac goes to sleep and wakes later, the drive icon is still on the desktop but it is not recognized by Time Machine as an available drive for backup. I have to shut off the drive and turn it back on.
Are there settings I must change or is it because the drive is USB powered and not direct powered?

S-Dot,
How is the EHD formatted and is it connected via USB to the iMac?
Finally, is the EHD bus powered or does it have it's own power supply? If it's bus powered that may be the issue, in that case it MUST be connected directly to one of the iMac's USB ports or it must be connected to a good quality Powered USB hub that is connected to one of the iMac's USB ports.
Please reply to all questions.

I've set the "Wake on Demand" in the system preference, but don't know the way to wake it up.

It wakes up automatically in response to requests for certain sharing services.
    About Wake on Demand
Search for an OS X application called "WakeOnLAN." Search the iTunes App Store for iOS apps with "wake on LAN" in the description.

  • How to i get my usb hard drive to auto show on desk top

    Hi
I have a small business and so multiple macs with 1 single external hard drive for storage
One of the Macs automatically connects to the USB hard drive when the mac starts up in a morning, whereas with the others you have to search for the shared drive and manually connect to it.
We have now changed to a new hard drive and would like all the Macs to automatically link in the morning and so wondered how this is done. Also the older mac is now still looking for the old drive and I cant stop it!
    Hope this makes sense?
    Hope someone can help
    Cheers
    Michael

You need to find the IP of that drive.
If they in fact do show up on the Desktop, then create a new Folder maybe named Shares on/in the Desktop, drag all those Shares shown on the Desktop to that Folder, drag that Folder to the right side of the Dock between Applications & Trash, this should give you a popup menu to select from.:-)
Mount that Share once, then once the Globe Icon shows up on the Desktop, drag that Globe Icon to the right side of the Dock between Applications & Trash. You now have a Dynamic Mount, a quick click on the Icon in the Dock will connect you.

  • How do I access a USB hard drive plugged into my AirPort Extreme from a PC?

    Hi
I have an AirPort Exteme, and my cousin and I are having no trouble accessing it from our MacBook Pro, however when it comes to my other cousin, she can't find it fron her PC (operating on windows 7).  When the MacBook Pro's open finder it is just sitting under 'shared'.  How do I get my cousin to access the Hard Drive from her PC? She is connected to the Wi-Fi network just fine
    Thanks in advance!

Download the Airport utility for PC from Apple - I use this to connect - This should load the Airport Base Station Agent in the system tray which can be used to connect. It should appear as a Network Drive (Z:)

  • How to i get rid of my 30day trial numbers after purchasing same from apple store

i found the 30 day trial for numbers useful  purchased numbers from app store
i now have two sets of numbers  could anyone please advise how i get rid of the 30 day trial
without taking out my purchased numbers   many thanks for your time

It used to be that to update the trial to the licensed version with the box, you just inserted the DVD & ran the installer to convert the trial to licensed. This changed with Snow Leopard. You need to delete the trial & then reinstall from the boxed DVD or the Mac App Store. The files to delete are the iWork ’09 folder from the main HD > Applications; the iWork ’09 folder in HD > Library > Application Support & the individual iWork application plist files found in HD > Users > (your account) > Library > Preferences for each user.
Yvan Koenig has written an AppleScript that removes the files. You can find it on his iDisk in For_iWork > iWork '09 > uninstall iWork '09.zip.

  • External hard drives ejecting after iMac wakes from sleep.

External hard drive keeps ejecting after iMac wakes from sleep. TM does not recognise, so have to unplug then re plug in Ext HD, only then TM will perform a back up. Not seamless backups. Help to resolve would be grand

Ive got the same problem with a Western Digital 500GB My Book Pro on my iMac Ive tried it on a few other machines and I think its happened on them, I say think because it was only when it had happened a couple of time that I started to take notice of circumstances etc and ive only had the drive a week, downloaded what may be a more uptodate "My Button manager" from the WD site still happened but Ive got this idea that it didnt happen on one machine which may not have had the MyButton thing on at that time, have you solved it yet I am using USB at the moment.

  • Are Firewire backup drives faster than USB backup drives?

I have a USB 2.x 80GB drive that I regularly backup my ibook with Retrospect (been using it for many years and did not dare touch any shareware backup apps in my move to OSX). Yes it was much cheaper than a Firewire version and why I bought it instead. It cant boot, but when I restore I boot my Retrospect boot CD (much, much slower than the OS 8.1 version. But that the nature of OSX). OSX is a wonderful OS and MUCH SUPERIOR to OS9, but there are drawbacks no doubt. For one is that it takes forever to boot from a CD/DVD, and I dont have access to the entire finder like I did with my Performa.
Just like with my old Performa when I backup my computer I need to boot with extensions off to avoid crashes. So I do so and backup the drive. Before I was using a ORB drive, but such a drive would not work natively in OSX so this backup drive suites me fine for know.
So just out of curiousity how much faster would a FireWire backup drive be?
This is the speed I get with this USB 2.x drive.

I've always been sold on FW400's 400Mbp transfer rate, but when I tested my external drives attached to my eMac (where each device was the only thing on that bus, adn the computer wasn't busy)
    USB1 <0.5MB/s
FW 400 drives just over 2MB/s (2 drives on twodifferent brands of FW enclosures tested)
ATA 9->15MB/s (I attached one of the drives from a FW enclosure directly on a spare ATA bus). This speed was the only one that seemed to vary according to the test run- ie the access was limited by the drive response.
Unfortunately I haven't got serialATA or USB2 buses on the eMac to do further tests, but the take home message is that the quoted speeds must be taken with a pinch of salt.
One other thing is that the new MacBook seems to have lost FW800!

In Finder's Menu, select Go menu>Go to Folder, and go to "/volumes". (no quotes)
Volumes is where an alias to your hard drive ("/" at boot) is placed at startup, and where all the "mount points" for auxiliary drives are created for you to access them. This folder is normally hidden from view.
Drives with an extra 1 on the end have a side-effect of mounting a drive with the same name as the system already think exists. Try trashing the duplicates with a 1 or 2 if there are no real files in them, and reboot.
    If it does contain data...

  • Is snow leopard usb backup drive access much much quicker using firewire than with usb 2.0 ?

is snow leopard usb backup drive access much much quicker using firewire than with usb 2.0 ?

I migrated from a USB2 external hard drive (when it failed) to the Firewire 800 and have not looked back.  I also sync from that primary drive to a secondary backup drive (still USB2).  Everything I do with the firewire drive is significantly faster than USB2.

  • How can i get a usb cable on my I mac  GS

How can i get a usb cable on my i mac Gs i want to know how to do it
is there any directions to help me out. Thanx

Well, you posted this question in the iMac forum and since you do not have your system info listed in your signature, we all assumed that you were asking about an iMac - not an eMac. That's why out pics do not make any sense.
Yes, the eMac has USB ports also. They are the second, third, and fourth ports back from the front - the ones after the small circular headphone style jacks.

  • USB backup drive is signalling a update from the App Store?

I use Carbon Copy Cloner to run a scheduled task of backing up my hard drive to a 1TB USB backup drive
When my USB backup drive is plugged into my MAC the App store says that I have 1 update (Pixelmator) - (which by the way is fully updated...)
When I unplug the drive from my MAC  the update goes away (and comes back when I plug the drive in again) ?
    WOTS HAPPENIN?

Its likely that the backup drive has an older version of Pixelmator that the Mac App Store sees when the drive is connected.

Not sure where you backup to.
ITunes keeps the latest backup only.
Icloud keeps the 3 last backup.
