How do I get news stories I click from my Yahoo home page to open in a new tab?

At one point, whenever I clicked on a news story on my Yahoo home page the story would open in a new tab, leaving the home page unchanged. When I updated Firefox, this feature was eliminated. Is there a way to turn it back on?

Hmm, this isn't a built-in feature of Firefox, but here are a couple possibilities:
(1) Maybe Yahoo has a setting for this, but it is stored in a cookie and the cookie got wiped out somehow?
(2) Maybe one of your add-ons has a setting for this, but the add-on was disabled during the update because it needs to be updated for Firefox 30?
You can check whether any of your extensions are disabled or need updating on the Add-ons page. Either:
* Command+Shift+a
* "3-bar" menu button (or Tools menu) > Add-ons
In the left column, click Extensions. The disabled ones appear toward the bottom on a gray background.
To check for extension updates, at the top above the list, click the "gear" button, then Check for Updates.
Anything relevant there?
The "manual" methods for opening a link in a new tab are:
* hold down the Command key while clicking the link
* "middle-click" the link with a mouse scroll wheel
* right-click the link > Open Link in New Tab
If command+click doesn't work, this can indicate that a script attached to the link and is overriding normal Firefox behavior.

• How to I get new tabs to open to the correct home page?

When I open new tabs they just go to a Google Search page, which is very frustrating, especially when I open a new tab and try to type in the URL bar but as soon as it finishes loading Google it blanks out what I typed in and goes to the Google site. In other words, "blank" new tabs do not open to the Favorites page or even my home page. They open to Google. How do I change that? In other words, how do I get new tabs to stop opening to Google and start opening to either my home page or the Favorites screen? Thanks!

It may not be a good soloution for a novice, but I have been using hosts files to block unwanted URLs for many years with zero disasters and lots of positive results.
As I noted, whenever I find a new "bad" site, I simply add the name to my hosts file. It takes a few seconds and then it's gone forever. I find no difficulty whatsoever.
No, it's not for everyone, which is why I gave no specific details; but for those who are interested and have the desire to learn about these hosts files, it is a very good way to avoid "bad" websites.
I also enjoy the "clean" view of a webpage when there are no ads showing at all. The page loads faster and the distractions are gone.
I never realized how much junk I am supressing until I got my iPad and saw all those horrid ads that are blocked on my other computers.
Here is a typical result of properly using a hosts file:

• How can I get new tabs to automatically open when I click on a new site (rather than replace the existing page I am using)?

For some reason when i click on to a new site or link, tabs no longer automatically open so if i forget to manually click on the little plus sign at the end of the tab strip, my new destination replaces where i currently was. This was not the case in the past and I cannot find where to reset this so that a new tab will once again auto create. !
I tried options/tabs: open new windows in a new tab instead, but this did not fix the issue. Can anyone tell me what i need to do get firefox to create auto creat a new tab when i move to a new link rather than replace the one currently in use? Thank you!

You can middle click a link to open that link in a new tab.

• How do i get new tabs back to firefox

when i open a new tab it opens as bing...how do i get firefox back?

Firefox Safe Mode is a diagnostic mode that disables extension that show in "Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions", so you can check if your issue is caused by any of them.
You can use one of these to start Firefox in Safe Mode:
*On Windows, hold down the Shift key while starting Firefox with a double-click on the Firefox desktop shortcut
*On Mac, hold down the Options key while starting Firefox
*Help > Restart with Add-ons Disabled
If it works in Safe Mode and in normal mode with all extensions (Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) disabled then try to find which extension is causing it by enabling one extension at a time until the problem reappears.
Close and restart Firefox after each change via "Firefox > Exit" (Windows: Firefox/File > Exit; Mac: Firefox > Quit Firefox; Linux: Firefox/File > Quit)

• How do I get new tabs to open up to Google page instead of blank pages

When I open up a new tab it goes to a blank window. I want it to open up directly to Google. I'm very new at computers and can't figure this out. Thanks for any help.

This is a hidden setting. You get to take a peek into Firefox's world of "preferences."
(1) In a new tab, type or paste '''about:config''' in the address bar and press Enter. Click the button promising to be careful.
(2) In the search box above the list, type or paste '''newtab''' and pause while the list is filtered
(3) Double-click the '''browser.newtab.url''' preference and enter your preferred page:
* ''Page thumbnails (default)'' => about:newtab
* ''Blank tab'' => about:blank
* ''Built-in Firefox home page'' => about:home
* ''Any other page'' => full URL to the page
''Note: I suggest copying the full URL you want from a different tab. If you use a shorthand URL like google.com, it will get redirected every single time, which is inefficient.''
Press Ctrl+t to open a new tab and verify that it worked. Works?

• How do I get new tabs to open at the end of the tab bar rather than next to the tab i am working on?

Im running firefox 3.6.12 on a pretty dated computer. Im using Windows XP Home Edition SP3
On previous FireFox editions, opening new tabs from pages Im working on, used to appear at the end of the list of tabs. Now when I open it, it appears right next to me.
Is there a way of altering this setting? I often open multiple tabs from the same page by clicking a link with the mouse wheel and I like to work through them in the order I clicked them. This is usualy for comparing things like holidays, car insurance etc
thankyou

You can change a preference to make tabs open
# at the end of all open tabs
# immediately after the current tab.
See: http://kb.mozillazine.org/About:config
*Type '''about:config''' in the URL bar and press the Enter key.
*If you see the warning, accept it (promise to be careful).
*Filter = browser.tabs.insertRelatedAfterCurrent
*Look at the "Value" column ('''false'''=open at end, '''true'''=open after current tab); Value = true is the default.
*Double-click that preference to toggle the value from true to false, or false to true
*Restart Firefox (File > Restart Firefox)
