How do I get Preview v. 8?

I have installed Maverick (OS 10.9). I have confirmed this by checking with "About this Mac". However, I only have version 7.0 of Preview, but I understand that the latest version of Preview is 8.0. How do I get this? I should add that I have searched for it, but I couldn't find it anywhere.

Maybe I was wrong. I see "Preview 8" as part of the titles of many links, but maybe they are not referring to Apple's Preview. There is a Window 8 version, and I have seen "Preview 8" in several other places (Look for yourself), and I saw "
Apple Releases OS X Mavericks Developer Preview 8
but maybe none of them were saying that the latest version of Preview is "8".
In any event, I won't bother looking for version 8 anymore. I have never been able to use the existing versions, so when I thought that there was a newer version, I thought it would be worth looking into. I was hoping that it would be something that I could use. Now, I'll just forget about Preview and maybe the project that I was told I could do with Preview.

Do a Get Info on one of the PDF files - select the file (click it once), then press Command-I (Get Info in the File menu).

I am having the same problem (LSD ES2 (version 9.0.0....) and Adobe Reader X and Acrobat Professional 8)
Whenever I save a form as PDF and open it with Reader or Acrobat I get to see the console.
But never when I view the form in Designer preview!
That used to work until I installed Reader X.
Same as you I checked all configurations in Reader and Acrobat: all perfect.
I really do hope that someone finds a solution for this.
PS. This problem should be discussed in THIS forum. It is clearly a Designer problem!

How do I get Preview to recognise DNG files?

My iMac intel core duo 2 has stopped recognising DNG files. I have just updated to OS X 10.7.5 from 10.6 but when I try to open a DNG file I get a message saying 'Preview does not currently support this raw format'. This time the system is creating thumbnails, whereas before I updated the OS DNG files showed as empty (0x0 kb) but it still won't open them.

Have you been using a DNG file converter before opening the files in Preview first?

Used to be a time when I clicked on a pdf link on the internet it opened up a new tab for me to view the file. Now, however it just downloads the file.

How do I get Preview Slideshow to appear in external monitor/projector

In Preview in Snow Leopard, I could set up a slideshow and use it for presentations through an external monitor or on a screen using a projector. I did this by dragging the Preview window onto the external monitor and then clicking on View/Slideshow. A kind of poor man's PowerPoint presentation, but very quick to set up. Now, unless the displays are mirrored, as soon as I click on View/Slideshow, the slideshow is "sucked" back onto the screen on my MacBook, leaving the external screen blank.
I have found that there are alternatives to Preview available, like Xee, but with the Preview slideshow feature, only the pictures appear on the screen, with all the background being black, which looks more "professional".
Does anyone know if there's anything I can do to stop the Preview slideshow ending up back on the MacBook?

There is something terribly wrong with Lion's support for two monitors, compared to previous Mac OSes, and it looks like you have found another instance of that fact. Oddly enough it seems like QuickLook may work where Preview doesn't. Anyway, I have two monitors and if I move a folder full of images to the secondary monitor, then select the images and right click and then click QuickLook in the Contextual Menu, then click the full screen arrows and the play button, the slideshow will play on the second monitor. If I open the pix in Preview, move the Preview window to the second monitor, and select "Play Slideshow" it promptly moves everything to the main screen, ditto for clicking the full screen arrows within Preview--moves to main monitor and in effect turns off secondary monitor. So give QuickLook a try and see if that will work for your purposes.

How Do I Get Preview to Print at 100%

I have PDFs that I must print at 100%.
So I, Change "Scale to Fit" to "Scale" (in the Print dialog) and enter 100%.
The drawing prints at 130%. In fact, no matter what scale I enter, (10%, 50%, 200%) it will always print so the PDF "fills" the page.
I take the same PDF to a Mac with OS 10.5.8, it prints at 100% every time with no fuss.
I am using OS 10.6.5
Also in OS 10.5 as I change the Scale the Preview window will show a Preview of the PDFs size, in 10.6.5 it does not change.
Have tried 3 printers, no joy on any, all work when I use 10.5.8.

About a week ago, Preview started to create new files in landscape only. I can't find any way (e.g. in preferences) to change back to my preferred portrait mode. I haven't updated my system software (OS X 10.6.8) for some time. Any suggestions?

Have you tried positioning your mouse cursor over the lower right corner of the window Preview is opening in, then holding the left mouse button down and dragging the window's corner to the portrait shape you want? Preview would then remember this size next time you open it.

If you want pdf's opening in Safari, using the built-in support (not Adobe) then quit open browsers, go to HD/Library/Internet Plug-Ins/ & remove any 'pdf' plugins. Occasionally, they're in Home/Library/Internet Plug-Ins/
If you really want Adobe to do it in browser, and the plugin is in place already - try opening Safari in 32 bit mode. Command-click it in the dock, then File-Get Info, & check the 32 bit box. Takes effect the next time Safari is started up.
